Hybrid systems play a crucial role in modeling real-world applications where discrete and continuous dynamics interact, including autonomous vehicles, power systems, and traffic networks. Safety verification for these systems requires determining whether system states can enter unsafe regions under given initial conditions and uncertainties—a question directly addressed by reachability analysis. However, hybrid systems present unique difficulties because their state space is divided into multiple regions with distinct dynamic models, causing traditional data-driven methods to produce inadequate over-approximations of reachable sets at region boundaries where dynamics change abruptly. This paper introduces a novel approach using hybrid zonotopes for data-driven reachability analysis of piecewise affine systems. Our method addresses the boundary transition problem by developing computational algorithms that calculate the family of set models guaranteed to contain the true system trajectories. Additionally, we extend and evaluate three methods for set-based estimation that account for input-output data with measurement noise. © 2025, CC BY.

Carbon-Aware Computing in a Network of Data Centers: A Hierarchical Game-Theoretic Approach

Over the past decade, the continuous surge in cloud computing demand has intensified data center workloads, leading to significant carbon emissions and driving the need for improving their efficiency and sustainability. This paper focuses on the optimal allocation problem of batch compute loads with temporal and spatial flexibility across a global network of data centers. We propose a bilevel game-theoretic solution approach that captures the inherent hierarchical relationship between supervisory control objectives, such as carbon reduction and peak shaving, and operational objectives, such as priority-aware scheduling. Numerical simulations with real carbon intensity data demonstrate that the proposed approach successfully reduces carbon emissions while simultaneously ensuring operational reliability and priority-aware scheduling. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

The paper is devoted to study of the influence of rolling modes on the performance of powerful interconnected electric drives of a hot rolling mill under the action of an electromagnetic coupling circuit between the electric drives of the roughing and finishing groups. The action of the electromagnetic coupling circuit manifests itself in the form of the influence of impact loads of synchronous electric drives on the angular velocity of direct current electric drives of the finishing group of the mill. The parameters of the electromagnetic coupling circuit are determined by the power supply scheme and equipment parameters. Values of impact loads applied to a synchronous motor depend on the rolling process parameters, in particular, the chemical composition of the rolled steel and the temperature of the ingot. The paper presents the results of calculating the rolling power for various rolling mode parameters. Using mathematical modeling in Simulink, numerical estimates of the influence of rolling modes on the magnitude of the voltage drop in the power supply unit and the drop in the angular velocity of the electric drive of the finishing group were obtained on the example of a wide-strip hot rolling mill 1700 of ArcelorMittal Temirtau JSC. © 2023 IEEE.

Sample Complexity for Evaluating the Robust Linear Observers Performance under Coprime Factors Uncertainty

This paper addresses the end-to-end sample complexity bound for learning in closed loop the state estimator-based robust H2 controller for an unknown (possibly unstable) Linear Time Invariant (LTI) system, when given a fixed state-feedback gain. We build on the results from Ding et al. (1994) to bridge the gap between the parameterization of all state-estimators and the celebrated Youla parameterization. Refitting the expression of the relevant closed loop allows for the optimal linear observer problem given a fixed state feedback gain to be recast as a convex problem in the Youla parameter. The robust synthesis procedure is performed by considering bounded additive model uncertainty on the coprime factors of the plant, such that a min-max optimization problem is formulated for the robust H2 controller via an observer approach. The closed-loop identification scheme follows Zhang et al. (2021), where the nominal model of the true plant is identified by constructing a Hankel-like matrix from a single time-series of noisy, finite length input-output data by using the ordinary least squares algorithm from Sarkar et al. (2020). Finally, a H∞ bound on the estimated model error is provided, as the robust synthesis procedure requires bounded additive uncertainty on the coprime factors of the model. The performance of Interline DC Power Flow controllers (IDC-PFCs) in Voltage Source Converters (VSC)-based High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grids, can be affected due to different issues. The current limitation of HVDC lines, the voltage limitation of HVDC buses, and DC voltage of the IDC-PFC intermediary capacitor prevent effective and efficient operation of IDC-PFCs. In this paper, it is shown that this issue can be overcome by using a virtual capacitor in parallel with the IDC-PFC intermediary capacitor. Also, an energy control-based scheme is proposed for the operation of IDC-PFCs in VSC-HVDC grid. The benefits of using the virtual capacitor are: widening the operational area of the IDC-PFCs for the determined duty cycle and injecting more voltage in series to the interconnected HVDC line to control the related HVDC line current. The proposed solution is successfully evaluated on a CIGRE three-terminal VSC-HVDC grid which is modeled by linearized space-state equations.

A Learning-Based Adaptive Compliance Method for Symmetric Bi-Manual Manipulation

Symmetric bi-manual manipulation is an essential skill in on-orbit operations due to its potent load capacity. Previous works have applied compliant control to maintain the stability of manipulations. However, traditional methods have viewed motion planning and compliant control as two separate modules, which can lead to conflicts with the simultaneous change of the desired trajectory and impedance parameters in the presence of external forces and disturbances. Additionally, the joint usage of these two modules requires experts to manually adjust parameters. To achieve high efficiency while enhancing adaptability, we propose a novel Learning-based Adaptive Compliance algorithm (LAC) that improves the efficiency and robustness of symmetric bi-manual manipulation. Specifically, the algorithm framework integrates desired trajectory generation and impedance-parameter adjustment under a unified framework to mitigate contradictions and improve efficiency. Second, we introduce a centralized Actor-Critic framework with LSTM networks preprocessing the force states, enhancing the synchronization of bi-manual manipulation. When evaluated in dual-arm cooperative handling and peg-in-hole assembly experiments, our method outperforms baseline algorithms in terms of optimality and robustness. © 2024, The Authors. Research in Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) and Autonomous Mobile Robots navigation has demonstrated some success in navigating flat indoor environments while avoiding obstacles. But in common resilience to unsafe conditions, unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) and autonomous mobile robots have wide applications in security reconnaissance, investigation of an obscure domain, and crisis reaction. Various examinations have been directed on the driving mechanism, motion planning, and trajectory tracking strategies for robots, yet restricted investigations have been led with respect to the obstacle detection and avoiding ability of robots. However, for little scale robots that contain sensitive surveillance sensors and can't afford to utilize heavy defensive shells, the nonappearance of obstacle avoidance solutions arrangements would leave the robot helpless before possibly risky hindrances. In this paper, we present an algorithm for obstacle detection and avoidance system has been developed for miniature Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) and autonomous mobile robots. We show an investigation differentiating heading build rules and relative course directions dodging distinctive operators in multi-specialist conditions, estimating separation between the two robots. The integration of distance measurement and avoiding other robots or obstacles is our observation in a multi-robot environment, where obstacles are also available. In this paper, we have discussed two algorithms, one will try to avoid other robot or obstacles and another will try to measure the distance between main agents to another agent. It utilizes an algorithm so that the system is both compact and power efficient. The proposed system can detect not only the presence, but also the approaching direction of a ferromagnetic obstacle. Therefore, an intelligent avoidance behavior can be generated by adapting the trajectory tracking method with the detection information. Design optimization is conducted to enhance

In this paper, using tools from graph theory we provide verifiable necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique hydraulic equilibrium in district heating systems of meshed topology and containing multiple heat sources. Even though numerous publications have addressed the design of efficient algorithms for numerically finding hydraulic equilibria in the general context of water distribution networks, this is not the case for the analysis of existence and uniqueness. Moreover, most of the existing work dealing with these aspects exploit the equivalence between the nonlinear algebraic equations describing the hydraulic equilibria and the KKT conditions of a suitably defined nonlinear convex optimization problem. Differently, this paper proposes necessary and sufficient graph-theoretic conditions on the actuator placement for the existence and uniqueness of a hydraulic equilibrium, independent of the actuators' control objective. An example based on a representative district heating network is considered to illustrate the key aspects of our contribution, and an explicit formulation of the steady state solution is given for the case in which pressure drops through pipes are linear with respect to the flow rate.

In recent years, online social networks and online news venues have become some of the main news and event-related information spreading mediums. Although using these mediums has facilitated the speed of accessing information, it also created a new phenomenon used for propaganda and disinformation: fake news. As fake news has detrimental consequences to society, new technologies need to be developed in order to stop their harmful effects. In this paper, we propose two Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) architectures with sentence transformers to solve two tasks: (1) a multi-class mono-lingual fake news detection task (i.e., mono-lingual task);and (2) a multi-class cross-lingual fake news detection task (i.e., cross-lingual task). For the mono-lingual task, we train and test a BiLSTM with BART sentence transformers model on an English dataset and obtain an accuracy of ∼ 0.53 and an F1-Score of ∼ 0.32. For the cross-lingual task, we train a BiLSTM with XLM sentence transformers model on an English dataset and test the model using transfer learning on a German dataset. For this task, we obtain an accuracy of ∼ 0.28 and an F1-Score of ∼ 0.19. © 2022 Copyright for this paper by its authors.
