The number of leaves at a given time is important to characterize plant growth and *** this work,we developed a high-throughput method to count the number of leaves by detecting leaf tips in RGB *** digital plant phenotyping platform was used to simulate a large and diverse dataset of RGB images and corresponding leaf tip labels of wheat plants at seedling stages(150,000 images with over 2 million labels).The realism of the images was then improved using domain adaptation methods before training deep learning *** results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method evaluated on a diverse test dataset,collecting measurements from 5 countries obtained under different environments,growth stages,and lighting conditions with different cameras(450 images with over 2,162 labels).Among the 6 combinations of deep learning models and domain adaptation techniques,the Faster-RCNN model with cycle-consistent generative adversarial network adaptation technique provided the best performance(R^(2)=0.94,root mean square error=8.7).Complementary studies show that it is essential to simulate images with sufficient realism(background,leaf texture,and lighting conditions)before applying domain adaptation ***,the spatial resolution should be better than 0.6 mm per pixel to identify leaf *** method is claimed to be self-supervised since no manual labeling is required for model *** self-supervised phenotyping approach developed here offers great potential for addressing a wide range of plant phenotyping *** trained networks are available at https://***/YinglunLi/Wheat-leaf-tip-detection.

Laboratory capacity in COVID-19 diagnosis and the need to enhance molecular testing in Ghana

COVID-19 pandemic has posed an unprecedented threat to both public health and the global economy. In an effort to manage and contain this pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) has prioritised laboratory testing (https://***/dg/speeches/detail/who-director-general-s-opening-remarks-at-the-media-briefing-on-covid-19—16-march-2020). We examine the testing capacity of the laboratory system in Ghana during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to WHO, gold standard for COVID-19 diagnosis is real-time reverse-transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). However, this molecular technique is not widely used in Ghana for disease diagnosis because of lack of infrastructure, lack of trained laboratory staff, high maintenance cost, and scarcity of reagents. Ghana has a three-tier health delivery system, with limited molecular diagnostic capacity. Three of the four public health laboratories (PHLs) have the capacity to perform molecular diagnosis of certain diseases. There are two main biomedical research institutions that are well-equipped to perform various molecular diagnostic tests. Nonetheless, their testing capacity is significantly limited in critical situations such as the current COVID-19 pandemic, which has led to testing backlogs and delays in returning test results at early stages of the pandemic. In an effort to address this situation, capacities of PHLs and nonclinical laboratories have been increased. Plans to use GeneXpert platform in certain areas of the country have been instituted in sixteen facilities, following system upgrades, risk assessments, and quality-checks. Enhanced molecular diagnostic testing in Ghana will help ensure a swift, accurate, and timely response to COVID-19 and future outbreaks. The data gained from these testing improvements may also help stimulate a robust bioeconomy because they can be used to improve the health of Ghanaians, as well as increase productivity through the implementation of data-driven and evidence-based

The growing complexity of real-world systems necessitates interdisciplinary solutions to confront myriad challenges in modeling, analysis, management, and control. To meet these demands, the parallel systems method rooted in Artificial systems, Computational experiments, and Parallel execution (ACP) approach has been developed. The method cultivates a cycle, termed parallel intelligence, which iteratively creates data, acquires knowledge, and refines the actual system. Over the past two decades, the parallel systems method has continuously woven advanced knowledge and technologies from various disciplines, offering versatile interdisciplinary solutions for complex systems across diverse fields. This review explores the origins and fundamental concepts of the parallel systems method, showcasing its accomplishments as a diverse array of parallel technologies and applications, while also prognosticating potential challenges. This paper addresses the aggregated monitoring problem for large-scale network systems with a few dedicated sensors. Full state estimation of such systems is often infeasible due to unobservability and/or computational infeasibility. Therefore, through clustering and aggregation, a tractable representation of a network system, called a projected network system, is obtained for designing a minimum-order average state observer. This observer estimates the average states of the clusters, which are identified with explicit consideration to the estimation error. Moreover, given the clustering, the proposed observer design algorithm exploits the structure of the estimation error dynamics to achieve computational tractability. Simulations show that the computation of the proposed algorithm is significantly faster than the usual H2/H∞ observer design techniques. On the other hand, compromise on the estimation error characteristics is shown to be marginal. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The paper describes the interaction between Tallinn University of technology (TalTech, Tallinn, Estonia) and ITMO University (St. Petersburg, Russia) based on recently signed agreement. The purpose of the agreement is to record the intention of TalTech and ITMO University to cooperate on implementing a double master's degree program, which involves confirmation of the master's educational level absorption and the award of master's degree and obtention of two diplomas, and to outline the organizational form, principles and terms of the implementation. The double degree Program is a two-year Master's program of 120 ECTS credit points. Its structure and content meets the requirements that both TalTech and ITMO University have established for their master's programs, in accordance with the government standards. Development and approval of the double degree Program is held by the Parties in accordance with the procedures established by them. This paper describes the procedure of implementation of a double-degree master program in mechatronics engineering. © 2020 IEEE.

This paper addresses a distributed filtering problem for saturated systems over sensor network with measurement outliers, where the multiplicative noises are used to characterize the internal behaviors of system model. A χ detection is first constructed in the distributed filter to detect and remove the outliers existing in the measurement outputs caused by some external environment disturbances or malicious attacks. Moreover, the innovation sequence is applied to design filter as a compensation term. The objective of this paper is to find a locally optimal distributed filter such that, for both the measurement outliers and multiplicative noises, an upper bound of filtering error covariance is given and then a proper filter gain is derived to minimize the obtained upper bound matrix with the help of the matrix analysis theory and the probability knowledge. Finally, a numerical experiment is proposed to verify the validity of the designed distributed filtering algorithm.

This paper presents the main faults of brushless DC motors and their diagnostic possibilities. Due to the popularity gain of such devices in the past decade, the maintenance and diagnostic of such machines is getting more important. As the machines are used in various applications, they are often critical parts of devices. Due to this, the unexpected failures of such machines are undesired and are to be avoided. The main faults of the machines are listed, some possibilities of their monitoring and diagnostics have been addressed. The necessity of further study has been pointed out. © 2020 IEEE.

This paper investigates the scheduling problem of a fleet of electric vehicles, providing mobility as a service to a set of time-specified customers, where the operator needs to solve the routing and charging problem jointly for each EV. Hereby we consider incentive-aware customers and propose that the operator offers monetary incentives to customers in exchange for time flexibility. In this way, the fleet operator can achieve a routing and charging schedule with lower costs, whilst the customers receive monetary compensation for their flexibility. Specifically, we first propose a bi-level optimization model whereby the fleet operator optimizes the routing and charging schedule accounting for the spatio-temporal varying charging price, jointly with a monetary incentive to reimburse the delivery time flexibility experienced by the customers. Concurrently the customers choose their own time flexibility by minimizing their own cost. Second, we cope with the computational burden coming from this nonlinear bi-level optimization model with an accurate reformulation approach consisting of the KKT optimality conditions, a Big-M-based linearization method, and the zero duality gap of convex optimization problems. This way, we convert the proposed problem into a single-level optimization problem, which can be solved by a strengthened generalized Benders decomposition method holding a faster convergence rate than the generalized Benders decomposition method. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed mathematical model, we carry out numerous simulation experiments by using the VRP-REP data of Belgium. The numerical results showcase that the proposed mathematical model can reduce the delivery fees for the customers together with the cost of operation incurred by the fleet operator. © 2022, The Authors. Medical procedures, in particular those invasive, generate significant ethical, legal, and social concerns, including the issues of humanity and person-hood, stigma, autonomy, privacy and security, research ethics, safety, moral and legal responsibility, fair access, and justice. It was pointed out that future research should focus on developing practical solutions to the ethical challenges of medical experimental procedures with human participants, facilitated by the collection of empirical data on the perspectives shared by the general public, researchers and of course study participants.
