Nonlinear phase-amplitude reduction of delay-induced oscillations

Spontaneous oscillations induced by time delays are observed in many real-world systems. Phase reduction theory for limit-cycle oscillators described by delay-differential equations (DDEs) has been developed to analyze their synchronization properties, but it is applicable only when the perturbation applied to the oscillator is sufficiently weak. In this study, we formulate a nonlinear phase-amplitude reduction theory for limit-cycle oscillators described by DDEs on the basis of the Floquet theorem, which is applicable when the oscillator is subjected to perturbations of moderate intensity. We propose a numerical method to evaluate the leading Floquet eigenvalues, eigenfunctions, and adjoint eigenfunctions necessary for the reduction and derive a set of low-dimensional nonlinear phase-amplitude equations approximately describing the oscillator dynamics. By analyzing an analytically tractable oscillator model with a cubic nonlinearity, we show that the asymptotic phase of the oscillator state in an infinite-dimensional state space can be approximately evaluated and nontrivial bistability of the oscillation amplitude caused by moderately strong periodic perturbations can be predicted on the basis of the derived phase-amplitude equations. We further analyze a model of gene-regulatory oscillator and illustrate that the reduced equations can elucidate the mechanism of its complex dynamics under nonweak perturbations, which may be relevant to real physiological phenomena such as circadian rhythm sleep disorders.

DC microgrids have gained in popularity in recent years due to features such as greater reliability, high efficiency, and control simplicity. Constant power loads (CPLs), on the other hand, are a problem and an effective cause of instability in DC MGs. To address the aforementioned issue, this paper discusses the stabilization of a buck power converter that supplies CPL via a regulated boost power converter. A robust sliding mode control is proposed, which stabilizes the output voltage and ensures the CPL's required power. The system is investigated in the context of external perturbations such as fluctuating input voltage and sudden change in the CPL. The robustness and efficacy of the proposed method have been demonstrated to confirm the system's overall stability. Simulation and experimentation are employed to verify the provided controller. The results verify the suggested controller's superiority.

Economic dispatch of a single micro-gas turbine under chp operation with uncertain demands

This work considers the economic dispatch problem for a single micro gas turbine, governed by a discrete state-space model, under combined heat and power (CHP) operation and coupled with a utility. If the exact power and heat demands are given, existing algorithms can be used to give a quick optimal solution to the economic dispatch problem. However, in practice, the power and heat demands can not be known deterministically, but are rather predicted, resulting in an estimate and a bound on the estimation error. We consider the case in which the power and heat demands are unknown, and present a robust optimization-based approach for scheduling the turbine's heat and power generation, in which the demand is assumed to be inside an uncertainty set. We consider two different choices of the uncertainty set relying on the ∞- and the 1-norms, each with different advantages, and consider the associated robust economic dispatch problems. We recast these as robust shortest-path problems on appropriately defined graphs. For the first choice, we provide an exact linear-time algorithm for the solution of the robust shortest-path problem, and for the second, we provide an exact quadratic-time algorithm and an approximate linear-time algorithm. The efficiency and usefulness of the algorithms are demonstrated using a detailed case study that employs real data on energy demand profiles and electricity tariffs. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. To solve distributed optimization efficiently with various constraints and nonsmooth functions, we propose a distributed mirror descent algorithm with embedded Bregman damping, as a generalization of conventional distributed projection-based algorithms. In fact, our continuous-time algorithm well inherits good capabilities of mirror descent approaches to rapidly compute explicit solutions to the problems with some specific constraint structures. Moreover, we rigorously prove the convergence of our algorithm, along with the boundedness of the trajectory and the accuracy of the solution. © 2021, CC0.

In this paper, the quaternary random pulse position modulation (QRPPM) is proposed to further reduce the power of dominant harmonic clusters. From the analysis of the power and power spectral density, the minimum integer-harmonics power dispersion rate (HPDR) is increased from 50.0% of the conventional random center/edge alignment PWM (RCEA-PWM) to 75.0% of the proposed QRPPM. Some results are provided to validate the proposed method.

With rapid urbanization, smart cities have become essential for enhancing urban management and sustainability by integrating technological, social, and institutional innovations. Among these innovations, vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications and electric vehicles (EVs) play a critical role in reducing carbon emissions and optimizing urban mobility. To address the existing gaps in holistic V2X integration, this paper presents a novel eco-assistive fog-based traffic management system (EAFTMS) that leverages a four-tier architecture (IoT, fog, cloud, and application) for scalable, real-time traffic optimization. A key innovation of this system is the AI-driven point exchange system (PES), designed to incentivize sustainable behaviors such as reducing unnecessary vehicle usage and promoting green lifestyle choices. Unlike conventional models, the proposed framework incorporates real-time behavioral monitoring, rewards-based sustainability programs, and V2X-enabled dynamic traffic control. Empirical validation demonstrates that EAFTMS outperforms existing models, including support vector regression (SVR), achieving a 30% reduction in latency, a 40% improvement in response time, a 25% increase in traffic flow efficiency, and a 35% reduction in CO2 emissions. These results highlight the framework’s potential to set new standards in intelligent green cities by offering scalable, practical, and environmentally impactful solutions to urban transportation challenges. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2025.

This article studies a relatively new type of aerial platform: variable-pitch propeller (VPP) quadcopters. Unlike conventional fixed-pitch propellers that can only generate upward thrust forces, a VPP can adjust its pitch angle to generate either upward or downward thrust forces. This provides VPP quadcopter with high agility and strong maneuverability. Although VPP quadcopters have attracted some attention recently, their potential has not been fully explored yet. In this article, we study the fault-tolerant property of VPP quadcopters when one of the four VPPs fails to provide any forces or torques. We identify the equilibrium state in this case and conduct the controllability analysis based on a linearized model. This shows that the system remains controllable even if one propeller fails. As a result, simple linear-quadratic regulator controllers can be used to control the platform. Although the controllability analysis and controller are based on the linearized model, numerical simulation incorporating measurement noises and external disturbances verifies the theoretic findings. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

In this paper we attack the white-box AES implementation with Differential Correlation Analysis (DCA) and fault injection, which are major risks the white-box AES implementation is facing now. A differential computation analysis (DCA) attack strategy is presented targeted at the implementation of the white-box AES algorithm based on a combination T-box. Using the DCA attack method, 16 subkeys are extracted successfully, which underscores the presence of a notable side-channel security vulnerability within the white-box AES encryption scheme. In order to improve the protection ability of the scheme against side-channel attacks, the enhanced rotating S-box masking scheme is adopted. No security risk has been detected which proves the validity of the mask scheme. Moreover, this research performs the fault injection attack on white-box implementation. However, the process typically demands substantial time and resources due to its manual testing nature. To optimize the method, we introduce an intelligent fault injection algorithm utilizing a genetic algorithm, which automates the fault injection attack to white-box implementation. This proposed scheme exemplifies intelligence and automation in the testing process. The empirical comparison highlights that the automated fault injection algorithm significantly enhances attack efficiency by 980% when compared to the random parameter search method.

The limited availability of public Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure poses a significant challenge to EV adoption in urban areas, that requires significant economic expenses. One potential solution to mitigate the problem is utilizing the existing traction DC grid infrastructure for EV charger connections. Such solution allows exploiting already existing traction substation equipment for both EV charging and powering DC traction grids, potentially reducing charging station installation costs. At the same time, bidirectional EV charger operation allows providing services such as DC grid voltage stabilization and traction transport braking energy recuperation. Therefore, this paper examines a scalable multiport DC-DC converter, suitable for multiterminal EV charging stations, located in the proximity to DC traction networks. The use of a multiport converter allows for sharing electric components across multiple ports, reducing the total number of elements required, compared to conventional solutions, where each EV charger relies on a separate converter. © 2004-2012 IEEE.
