Monitoring changes in the Earth’s surface is crucial for understanding natural processes and human impacts, necessitating precise and comprehensive interpretation methodologies. Remote sensing satellite imagery offers a unique perspective for monitoring these changes, leading to the emergence of remote sensing image change interpretation (RSICI) as a significant research focus. Current RSICI technology encompasses change detection and change captioning, each with its limitations in providing comprehensive interpretation. To address this, we propose an interactive Change-Agent, which can follow user instructions to achieve comprehensive change interpretation and insightful analysis, such as change detection and change captioning, change object counting, change cause analysis, etc. The Change-Agent integrates a multi-level change interpretation (MCI) model as the eyes and a large language model (LLM) as the brain. The MCI model contains two branches of pixel-level change detection and semantic-level change captioning, in which the BI-temporal Iterative Interaction (BI3) layer is proposed to enhance the model’s discriminative feature representation capabilities. To support the training of the MCI model, we build the LEVIR-MCI dataset with a large number of change masks and captions of changes. Experiments demonstrate the SOTA performance of the MCI model in achieving both change detection and change description simultaneously, and highlight the promising application value of our Change-Agent in facilitating comprehensive interpretation of surface changes, which opens up a new avenue for intelligent remote sensing applications. © 2024, CC BY.

In this paper a coalitional control and observation scheme is presented in which the coalitions are changed online by enabling and disabling communication links. Transitions between coalitions are made to best balance overall system performance and communication costs. Linear Matrix Inequalities are used to design the controller and observer, guaranteeing stability of the switching system. Simulation results for vehicle platoon control are presented to illustrate the proposed method.

Biometric-based digital door locking system plays a significant role in providing authentication, reducing the workforce in smart homes, and building automation scenarios. This paper proposes a prototype model of an IoT-based Smart Door Locking System (SDLS) with reliable double-access authentication. The IoT and biometric technology authentication mechanism is adopted to make SDLS more secure and reachable with the alert mechanism on unauthorized access. The SDLS contains a biometric scanner, and a thumb impression is made either from a mobile or a biometric-mounted device on the door and both are connected to the centralized cloud-hosted real-time database. The proposed system was tested in real-time and has shown competitive results compared to other Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) and password-based door locks. Hence, the overall performance efficiency of SDLS is satisfactory and provides biometric-based remote access to control and monitor door locks with the alert system on unauthorized access.

Fitness landscape analysis (FLA) is quite important in evolutionary computation. In this paper, we propose a novel FLA method, the nearest-better network (NBN), which uses the nearest-better relationship to simplify the original fitness landscape of continuous optimization problems. We introduce an efficient algorithm to calculate NBN for continuous problems. We also propose four numerical measurements and a 3D visualization method based on NBN. Experiments show that compared to the other main FLA methods, the four numerical measurements proposed here can effectively measure the four intended features: neutrality, ruggedness, modality, and basin of attraction, respectively, and common features of the fitness landscape can be maintained in 3D NBN visualization, regardless of the scale of the problem. NBN also provides a view of how algorithms search in high-dimensional problems with the help of the 3D NBN visualization. © 1997-2012 IEEE.

On the certainty-equivalence approach to direct data-driven LQR design

The linear quadratic regulator (LQR) problem is a cornerstone of automatic control, and it has been widely studied in the data-driven setting. The various data-driven approaches can be classified as indirect (i.e., based on an identified model) versus direct or as robust (i.e., taking uncertainty into account) versus certainty-equivalence. Here we show how to bridge these different formulations and propose a novel, direct, and regularized formulation. We start from indirect certainty-equivalence LQR, i.e., least-square identification of state-space matrices followed by a nominal model-based design, formalized as a bi-level program. We show how to transform this problem into a single-level, regularized, and direct data-driven control formulation, where the regularizer accounts for the least-square data fitting criterion. For this novel formulation we carry out a robustness and performance analysis in presence of noisy data. Our proposed direct and regularized formulation is also amenable to be further blended with a robust-stability-promoting regularizer. In a numerical case study we compare regularizers promoting either robustness or certainty-equivalence, and we demonstrate the remarkable performance when blending both of them. © 2021, CC BY.

Polynomial Approximation of Value Functions and Nonlinear controller Design with Performance Bounds

For any suitable Optimal control Problem (OCP) there exists a value function, defined as the unique viscosity solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) Partial-Differential-Equation (PDE), and which can be used to design an optimal feedback controller for the given OCP. In this paper we approximately solve the HJB-PDE by proposing a sequence of Sum-Of-Squares (SOS) problems, each of which yields a polynomial sub-solution to the HJB-PDE. We show that the resulting sequence of polynomial sub-solutions converges to the value function of the OCP in the L1 norm. Furthermore, for each polynomial sub-solution in this sequence we show that the associated sequence of sublevel sets converges to the sublevel set of the value function of the OCP in the volume metric. Next, for any approximate value function, obtained from an SOS program or any other method (e.g. discretization), we construct an associated feedback controller, and show that sub-optimality of this controller as applied to the OCP is bounded by the distance between the approximate and true value function of the OCP in the W1,∞ (Sobolev) norm. Finally, we demonstrate numerically that by solving our proposed SOS problem we are able to accurately approximate value functions, design controllers and estimate reachable sets. Data-Driven Distributionally Robust control for Interacting Agents under Logical Constraints

In this paper, we propose a distributionally robust control synthesis for an agent with stochastic dynamics that interacts with other agents under uncertainties and constraints expressed by signal temporal logic (STL). We formulate the control synthesis as a chance-constrained program (CCP) with STL specifications that must be satisfied with high probability under all uncertainty tubes induced by the other agents. To tackle the CCP, we propose two methods based on concentration of measure (CoM) theory and conditional value at risk (CVaR) and compare the required assumptions and resulting optimizations. These approaches convert the CCP into an expectation-constrained program (ECP), which is simpler to solve than the original CCP. To estimate the expectation using a finite set of observed data, we adopt a distributionally robust optimization (DRO) approach. The underlying DRO can be approximated as a robust data-driven optimization that provides a probabilistic under-approximation to the original ECP, where the probability depends on the number of samples. Therefore, under feasibility, the original STL constraints are satisfied with two layers of designed confidence: the confidence of the chance constraint and the confidence of the approximated data-driven optimization, which depends on the number of samples. We then provide details on solving the resulting robust data-driven optimization numerically. Finally, we compare the two proposed approaches through case studies. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. Steady state characterization and frequency synchronization of a multi-converter power system on high-order manifold

We investigate the stability properties of a multi-converter power system model, defined on a high-order manifold. For this, we identify its symmetry (i.e., rotational invariance) generated by a static angle shift and rotation of AC signals. We characterize the steady state set, primarily determined by the steady state angles and DC power input. Based on eigenvalue conditions of its Jacobian matrix, we show asymptotic stability of the multi-converter system in a neighborhood of the synchronous steady state set by applying the center manifold theory. We guarantee the eigenvalue conditions via an explicit approach. Finally, we demonstrate our results based on a numerical example involving a network of identical DC/AC converter systems. The article studies the social behavior of various age groups using experimental Economics methods. The conducted laboratory experiments show that the age of the participants and the specificity of the activity strongly influence the rate of infection spread. Simulation model with bots is constructed, the parameters of which can be adjusted to approximate the results obtained in experiments. © 2020 IEEE.
