The article presents two approaches to the method of implementation of transformations of fuzzy queries into queries in the SQL standard. This implementation can be carried out: (1) in a database (in the form of functions, procedures, triggers or other acceptable form), using the existing query processing system in the database, and thus it can expand the functionality of that database;(2) in an application (which communicates with the database), and thus a considerable portion of calculations will be transferred from the database to that application. An analysis of those approaches was conducted and it was demonstrated that the presented methods should enjoy extensive practical application.

Considering that most faults in overhead power lines are transient, fast and reliable algorithms for determining types of faults are needed. Reliable algorithm allows design of adaptive system for improving service continuity by automatically restoring power to the line after a momentary fault. This paper describes the procedure for real-time adjustment of algorithm for detection of arc faults in overhead power lines. This adjustment refers to real-time implementation of algorithm on DSP microcontroller. Given the nature of the problem and strict requirements for testing algorithm in real experiment, procedure for testing hardware in simulation loop is developed. Hardware in the loop (HIL) technique is based on MATLAB/Simulink, NI CB-68LP data acquisition card and simplified simulation model of faults in overhead power lines. © 2018 IEEE.

In process engineering, precise, automatic, and dynamic identification of two-phase structures remains a challenging yet essential task, particularly for effectively controlling pneumatic systems handling solid particles. Complex interactions between gas and solid phases and variable flow geometries complicate the precise control of fluidized beds. This study evaluates an adaptive, vision-based flow control system designed for fluidized bed reactors, using real-time image analysis to characterize flow structures. A self-developed air flow valve regulator system, combined with a programmable logic controller (PLC) and dynamic image feedback, enables this innovative control approach. By analyzing grey-level signals within specified regions of interest (ROIs), the system accurately differentiates between critical fluidization regimes: bubbling, plugging, and turbulent flow. The control algorithm dynamically adjusts the flow rate, achieving a mean square error of 6.98 m 3 /h, underscoring the system’s reliability and potential for further optimization. Additionally, safeguards were implemented to prevent material loss at high airflow thresholds, enhancing system stability and safety. The findings demonstrate the potential of adaptive vision-based control for fluidized bed automation, offering an advanced solution for real-time monitoring and precise flow regulation in complex two-phase processes.

This paper proposes a new chattering-free Fixed-time Observer-Based Sliding Mode control (FOBSMC) scheme for synchronization of two bilateral teleoperations under unknown time-varying delay. The system is subjected to unknown disturbances which are estimated in a fixed time by utilizing the Disturbance Observer-based SMC scheme. The fixed-time State Observer-based SMC is designed to estimate the unmeasured velocity state, while the position state is assumed to be available. Fixed-time stability method is used to provide the system convergence time independently of initial states. A FOBSMC scheme is first designed for master system of bilateral teleoperation under unknown time-varying delay to track the environmental torque by the human operating torque in the presence of time delay in the communication channel, as well as estimating the unknown disturbances and unmeasured states. A FOBSMC scheme is designed to synchronize slave system to master system in the presence of time delay in the communication channel, as well as estimating disturbances and states. The stability analysis is performed for closed-loop system of combined controller-observer by using Lyapunov theory. The efficacy of the proposed method to fulfill a good transparency and stability under time-varying communication delays is tested by performing numerical simulation in Simulink/MATLAB. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

Fine control of output power for nuclear power plants is the essential goal for safe operation. In this work, a Fuzzy analytical proportional-integral-derivative (FPID) controller with different configurations is designed to adjust and control the pressure of the PZR system. The stability analysis of the FPID controller with variable gains is established, and conditions for bounded-input bounded-output stability conditions (BIBO) are derived using the small gain theory. Two scenarios are applied for evaluating the dynamic response of applied controllers. In addition, performance indices are compared between the PZR model and data measured from the PCtran VVER-1200 simulator. Finally, a simulation platform is developed for MATLAB / Simulink to implement the three-region nonlinear non-equilibrium PZR model and the designed pressure controllers. The analysis and evaluation results showed good durability of the designed controllers and satisfactory performance of the control. These results further show that the nonlinear PZR model is accurate, feasible, and valuable for dynamic simulation and control unit design.

The European eSafety initiative aims to improve the safety and efficiency of road transport. The main element of eSafety is the pan-European eCall project—an in-vehicle system which idea is to inform about road collisions or serious accidents. As estimated by the European Commission, the implemented system will reduce services’ response time by 40%. This will save 2,500 people a year. In 2015, the European Parliament adopted the legislation that from the end of March 2018 all new cars from the EU should be equipped with the eCall system. The limitation of this idea is that only small part of cars driven in UE are brand new (about 3.7% brand new cars were sold in 2015). This paper presents the first concept of an onboard eCall device which can be installed at the owners’ request in used vehicles. The proposed system will be able to detect a road accident, indicate the number of vehicle’s occupants, report their vital functions, and send that information to dedicated emergency services via duplex communication channel. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019.

One of the risk factors in skin cancer is unprotected exposure to UV radiation. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer but also curable if it is diagnosed in the early stages. This study uses a histogram analysis technique to investigate and classify two common skin lesions, nevi and melanoma. The colour feature investigated is the optimal threshold values in RGB space. Also, a boundary limit of the skin lesions is performed using a colour histogram analysis and the optimal threshold determination. A statistical analysis of the relevant threshold values for R, G and B histograms to establish a sound colour separation between benign and malignant lesions is performed. Monochromatic channel threshold values are clustered using K-means and the validity of clustering is assessed by silhouette method. The proposed method technique is evaluated using 120 colour digital images (60 melanomas and 60 nevi) from the Digital Archive of the department of Dermatology of the University Medical Center in Groningen (UMCG)1. The reported results suggest red as the lesion representative colour in dermoscopic images. The pixel values for red channel are strongly related to the skin lesion type. © SGEM 2019.

MRI images contain a lot of subtle information related to various lesions which are difficult to be picked up by radiologists. Computer aided diagnosis CAD is a valuable tool to improve the ability of an average radiologist to diagnose the subtle lesions. This study uses the isolated foreground pixels in MRI images as a feature able to discern a stroke patient by a healthy one. Brain MRI image was divided into eight equal sectors. The isolated foreground pixels (i.e. pixels satisfying a neighborhood configuration that corresponds to an isolated foreground pixel) were extracted using hit-or-miss and skeleton transformations. We have tested the proposed algorithms using two cerebral image datasets (healthy and acute stroke patients). The mean SD values of isolated foreground pixels for stroke patients systematically exceed the corresponding values for healthy patients. The higher numbers of isolated foreground pixel determined using hit-or-miss transform indicate this method as a promising approach for a simple and quick evaluation of stroke. © SGEM 2019.

The paper discusses an adaptive strategy to effectively control nonlinear manipulation motions of a dual arm robot (DAR) under system uncertainties including parameter variations, actuator nonlinearities and external disturbances. It is proposed that the control scheme is first derived from the dynamic surface control (DSC) method, which allows the robot’s end-effectors to robustly track the desired trajectories. Moreover, since exactly determining the DAR system’s dynamics is impractical due to the system uncertainties, the uncertain system parameters are then proposed to be adaptively estimated by the use of the radial basis function network (RBFN). The adaptation mechanism is derived from the Lyapunov theory, which theoretically guarantees stability of the closed-loop control system. The effectiveness of the proposed RBFN-DSC approach is demonstrated by implementing the algorithm in a synthetic environment with realistic parameters, where the obtained results are highly promising. © 2019, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.
