In steam/water loop for large scale ships, there are mainly five sub-loops posing different dynamics in the complete process. When optimization is involved, it is necessary to select different prediction horizons for each loop. In this work, the effect of prediction horizon for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) system is studied. Firstly, Nonlinear Extended Prediction Self-Adaptive controller (NEPSAC) is designed for the steam/water loop system. Secondly, different prediction horizons are simulated within the NEPSAC algorithm. Based on simulation results, we conclude that specific tuning of prediction horizons based on loop’s dynamic outperforms the case when a trade-off is made and a single valued prediction horizon is used for all the loops.

Heat Transfer Optimization of end Winding Rotor Generator by the Use of Modified Axial Spacer: A Case Study

This paper presents a case study of a rotor fault occurring in the rotor generator of a steam power plant located in Lontar, Banten Province, Indonesia. The steam power plant has 3 x 315 MV capacity and uses hydrogen in the cooling system. The issue arising during the operation was caused by heat transfer exceeding the normal level. The grounding of the rotor occurred through rising vibration and temperature, tripping the generator unit. During repairs, the axial spacer was replaced with a new model, where it is longer than the original, adding a bar spacer at a previously unavailable position and creating a cooling track profile. This is a case study on the replacement of the axial spacer model aimed at preventing the expansion of the winding, so as not to touch with each other, through the installation of a longer axial spacer and the addition of the spacer bar, and lastly adding the track profile to the cooling hydrogen gas flow thereby maximizing the cooling process from the end winding rotor generator. Heat transfer is an analysed parameter related to the model change of the axial spacer. The addition of a track cooling gas flow has been able to maximize the heat transfer process, which is simulated in this paper. The performance of the rotor generator increased through several parameters after the replacement of the axial spacer model.

Benchmarking top-k keyword and top-k document processing with T2K2and T2K2D2

Top-k keyword and top-k document extraction are very popular text analysis techniques. Top-k keywords and documents are often computed on-the-fly, but they exploit weighted vocabularies that are costly to build. To compare competing weighting schemes and database implementations, benchmarking is customary. To the best of our knowledge, no benchmark currently addresses these problems. Hence, in this paper, we present T2K2, a top-k keywords and documents benchmark, and its decision support-oriented evolution T2K2D2. Both benchmarks feature a real tweet dataset and queries with various complexities and selectivities. They help evaluate weighting schemes and database implementations in terms of computing performance. To illustrate our benchmarks' relevance and genericity, we successfully ran performance tests on the TF-IDF and Okapi BM25 weighting schemes, on one hand, and on different relational (Oracle, PostgreSQL) and document-oriented (MongoDB) database implementations, on the other hand. Estimation of lactate threshold with machine learning techniques in recreational runners

Lactate threshold is considered an essential parameter when assessing performance of elite and recreational runners and prescribing training intensities in endurance sports. However, the measurement of blood lactate concentration requires expensive equipment and the extraction of blood samples, which are inconvenient for frequent monitoring. Furthermore, most recreational runners do not have access to routine assessment of their physical_tness by the aforementioned equipment so they are not able to calculate the lactate threshold without resorting to an expensive and specialized center. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to create an intelligent system capable of estimating the lactate threshold of recreational athletes participating in endurance running sports. The solution here proposed is based on a machine learning system which models the lactate evolution using recurrent neural networks and includes the proposal of standardization of the temporal axis as well as a modi_cation of the strati_ed sampling method. The results show that the proposed system accurately estimates the lactate threshold of 89.52% of the athletes and its correlation with the experimentally measured lactate threshold is very high (R=0,89). Moreover, its behaviour with the test dataset is as good as with the training set, meaning that the generalization power of the model is high. Therefore, in this study a machine learning based system is proposed as alternative to the traditional invasive lactate threshold measurement tests for recreational runners. This paper develops an adaptive filter for fusing the noisy and biased measurement data from MEMS-based inertial measurement units and encoders for estimation of acceleration in robot arms. A discrete-time second-order model is derived for designing an adaptive Kalman filter (AKF). The output of the AKF is an unbiased but noisy estimate of the acceleration. To cancel the noise, a recursive least square filter is designed to filter the output of the designed AKF. It is shown that the resulting filtered signal is unbiased and noise-cancelled. Experimental results demonstrating the effectiveness of the developed adaptive filter are presented. © 2018 IEEE.

The population aging, the need to reduce the cost of elderly care, as well as to increase security and energy efficiency have led to the emergence of many home monitoring systems. However, most of these systems are expensive, are not standardized, are complicated to implement (individualized wiring, wireless nodes) and can only be used with qualified personnel. Our light bulb prototype aims to reduce such deficiencies as well as remove the obstacles to adopting such systems by reducing costs and simplifying installation. The proposed solution aims to capitalize on existing electrical and lighting equipment, to set up a monitoring system only by replacing the luminaires in the existing electrical system with other lighting sources developed specifically for this purpose. Through the periodic replacement process and based on the current trend in light-emitting diode usage, these smart luminaires can be gradually introduced to supervise the location within houses, mostly elders' homes who live alone.

In this paper some preliminary results of network anomaly detection for resource-constrained systems have been presented. All described algorithms are embedded into a three-tier system application. The presented solution is a response to nowadays trends in computer/network security domain that indicate gradual shifting from signature-based anomaly detection typically based on some selected statistical measures toward systems that are based on behavioural analysis of computer systems and/or networks. The presented system requirements, explain relevant terminology as well as we include some selected results and their analysis. The solution is potentially destined for very resource-constrained systems (IoT specifically), all tests were carried out in an example network to additionally analyse their effect of the presented approach on the computer resources.

A new trend rising in IT environs is the Mobile cloud computing with colossal prerequisites of infrastructure along with resources. In cloud computing environment, load balancing a vital aspect. Cloud load balancing way toward disseminating workloads across numerous computing resources. Proficient load balancing plan guarantees effective resource usage by the supply of resources to cloud user's on-demand premise and it might even help organizing clients by applying fitting planning criteria the current paper discusses and implements the concept of load balancers, which are the lifeblood of any cloud computing network. In this paper, a new load balancing system is presented Focal Load Balancer (F-LB), which has been developed to reduce the traffic in the Cloud, whilst assuring a smooth flow of data in the cloud network. The proposed algorithm takes advantage of the dynamic load balancing characteristics over static balancing, and avoids the damage that a static load balancer causes if it fails. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm operates efficiently and effectively, and it provides a significantly improved performance over existing algorithms. Comparisons with the krill-LB and agent-based algorithms show that the new system provides a reduction in average wait time, a significant increase in throughput, and a dramatic reduction in CPU time consumption.

Because of the wide use of smartphones in our daily activities, a wide range of mobile applications have been developed to serve as assistive technologies. However, there is a lack of applications in the Arabic language to assist disabled people. The main aim of this paper is to build a simple yet accurate Arabic language application that is capable of helping blind users in real-Time. In the proposed technology, the blind user captures a photo and records his/her voice inquiry. The query is instantly sent with the captured photo to a set of volunteers. The volunteers answer the blind user enquiries and send the answers back. Fifteen visually impaired persons and ten volunteers were used in the experimental testing. The scenarios were carefully created based on realistic situations. The subjects were then asked to answer a questionnaire to test if their queries were answered effectively and efficiently. The early results are promising because all blind users found the proposed technology useful and 80% of them wanted to use it on a daily basis. In addition, all volunteers found the application easy to use with clear instructions and 80% of them were excited about using it to assist blind users. This paper proposes a new strategy for prototypes initialization in linear vector quantization algorithm (LVQ). Three principles which must be satisfied during the learning stage are shown in the paper. These principles are essential to guarantee appropriate learning for the LVQ algorithm. However, all versions of LVQ algorithms try to answer to one of the principles, but unfortunately contradicting with the other ones. The new strategy proposed in the paper aims to solve this issue and consists of two steps: (1) analyse the a-priori data set and (2) apply a pre-learning algorithm to initialize the prototypes. The pre-learned prototypes resulted from step 2 are used by the LVQ algorithm in the learning process. The examples presented in the case study and the criterion used to assess the training performance of the prototypes reinforce that the training strategy of the prototypes proposed in the paper provides better results in certain situations compared to classical LVQ algorithms.
