Peer-to-Peer (P2P) distributed systems have received considerable attention mainly due to their potential for high-performance and high-reliability. Job scheduling in P2P distributed systems is one of the most important issues. In this paper, we have evaluated the performance of four job scheduling algorithms named Random, Round Robin, Number of Connections and Server Load in P2P distributed computing environment. The aim of the performance evaluation is to provide a comprehensive view of what performance can be expected from these algorithms in P2P systems in terms of CPU utilization, task processing, traffic received and traffic sent at different load scenarios. We used OPNET modeler to build the simulation model for FTP application on the P2P distributed systems. The output of the performance comparison illustrates different QoS (Quality of Service) aspects of these basic algorithms under different workloads and traffic settings. The results show that the performance of each algorithm changes according to the operational environment setting. The simulation results show that the Server Load-based scheduling algorithm has the best performance among the four algorithms followed by the Number of Connections-based scheduling algorithm. Simulations also show that the Server Load scheduling policy is not suitable for heavy load situations and the Random algorithm is suitable for some settings, especially in the low load situation.

Load balancing is essential for efficient utilization of resources and enhancing the responsiveness of a computational grid, especially that hosts of services most frequently used, i.e. food, health and nutrition. Various techniques have been developed and applied;each has its own limitations due to the dynamic nature of the grid. Efficient load balancing can be achieved by an effective measure of the node's/cluster's utilization. In this paper, as a part of an NSTIP project # 10-INF1381-04 and in order to assess of FAQIH framework ability to support the load balance in a computational grid that hosts of food, health and nutrition inquire services. We detail the design and implementation of a proposed fuzzy-logic-based scheme for dynamic load balancing in grid computing services. The proposed scheme works by using a fuzzy logic inference system which uses some metrics to capture the variability of loads and specifies the state of each node per a cluster. Then, based on the overall nodes' states, the state of the corresponding cluster will be defined in order to assign the newly arrived inquires such that load balancing among different clusters and nodes is accomplished. Many experiments are conducted to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed fuzzy-logic-based scheme to support the load balance where the results show that the proposed scheme achieves really satisfactory and consistently load balance than of other randomize approaches in grid computing services.

Improved vertex control for a ball and plate system

This paper deals with a ball and plate experiment and the objective is twofold. In the first part, a solution to the identification problem for this multi-input multi-output system is provided. In the second part an improved vertex control technique, recently proposed in literature (Nguyen et al. [2011b], Nguyen et al. [2011a]), is applied for stabilizing the ball and plate system. Based on an interpolation technique, feasibility and an asymptotically stable closed loop behavior are guaranteed.

In this paper, the robust control of constrained discrete-time linear time-varying or uncertain systems affected by bounded additive disturbance is considered. The main idea is to use an interpolation technique between several local unconstrained robust optimal controls. From the implementation point of view, the scheme is shown to be computationally attractive, at each time instant a quadratic programming (QP) problem being solved on-line. The proofs of recursive feasibility of the optimization procedure and ISS stability of the closed loop system are given.

A difficult challenge in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and full electric vehicles (EVs) is the torque control of externally excited synchronous machines (EESMs). Effective torque control requires an efficient solution to the state reference generation problem, which is a nonlinear non-convex optimization problem. The goal of this paper is to develop a state reference generation algorithm based on the griding of the state and output spaces. Firstly, an approximation defined over a cubic partition of the torque function with a piecewise affine (PWA) function is made. As a result, the state reference generation problem is reduced in each cube to solving a convex optimization problem. Moreover, this approach provides guarantees about the error bound introduced by the state reference generation procedure for the full operational state-space. To illustrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm several simulation results are presented. The obtained results show significant improvement compared with existing state-of-the-art reference generation methods.

Expressing user's preferences in database querying is best achieved by fuzzy modeling of linguistic terms included in selection criteria. This paper deals with temporal criteria, for querying date/time columns in classical relational databases. Fuzzy models for some linguistic terms and ways to operate with them, in order to evaluate queries, are proposed.

The goal of this paper was to develop a Simple Access Object Protocol (SOAP) Parlay X Web service interface that supports standard GSM modems and can be used as development and testing environment for SMS based applications. The service interface was translated into Java classes from a selected set of Parlay X version 2.1 Web Service Description Language (WSDL) files providing mandatory SMS functionality. SendSms, ReceiveSms, NotificationManager and SmsNotification Web services were fully implemented. Other Parlay X services (e. g. MMS, ringtone services and other) can be built in a similar fashion and easily integrated into the system architecture. The service backend was implemented using Java wrapper classes that mimic the described Web services, their datatypes and membership functions. The SIM300 GSM modem was used to transmit and receive SMS, while a MySQL database schema was used as interface between the modem and the service interface. Handler classes (also implemented in Java) were used as modem behaviour controller, while the database connection was established using the Java Database Connectivity classes provided by Oracle. Detailed system architecture, implemented Web services functionality, database structure and Message Sequence Charts are given.

Sentiment analysis in this paper refers to the task of classifying opinionated health and nutrition tweets as either positive or negative according to the overall sentiment expressed by the *** paper presents an experimental study of using support vector machines for sentiment analysis in the health and nutrition domain of *** results demonstrate the applicability of support vector machines to Twitter sentiment analysis and emphasize the importance of preprocessing due to the unique attributes of tweets.

This paper presents a hybrid optimization algorithm referred to as Hybrid spiral dynamics bacterial foraging (HSDBF). The algorithm synergizes spiral adaptive simplified bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA) and spiral dynamics inspired optimization algorithm (SDA). The standard BFA has better exploitation strategy while SDA has superior exploration approach and stable convergence when approaching the optimum value. The hybrid algorithm preserves the strengths of BFA and SDA, thus producing better results. Moreover, it has simple structure and involves less computational burden. Several unimodal and multimodal benchmark functions are employed to test the algorithm in determining the global optimum point. Furthermore, the proposed method is applied to a proportional-derivative (PD) controller optimization for a flexible manipulator system (FMS). The results show that HSDBF outperforms BFA in all test functions and successfully optimizes the PD controller.

systems with periodic coefficients are of fundamental interest because periodic variations appears in a great range of physical systems. This kind of variations are the cause of parametric resonance, by other hand, second order sliding modes, SOSM, is known to be robust to several kind of perturbations. The principal contribution of this note is the design of a SOSM controller that can avoid the parametric resonance in an under-actuated system. We tested the proposed control scheme on a laboratory crane that is exposed to parametric resonance. We present simulations and experiments.
