This paper presents the distributed control system for elevators (DECS). Based on the characteristics of the today installed elevator systems, the electric traction elevator has been chosen for this paper. Conventional elevator control systems (ECS) have several disadvantages compared to modern control systems (large number of cables, safety issues, etc.). An alternative to conventional ECS is the DECS. A DECS based on the CAN (controller Area Network) protocol is presented in this paper. The presented ECS consists of three modules: CU Elevator (CU - control Unit), CU Cabin, CU Floor. The mentioned modules, control principles and implementation methods based on the PIC 18F458 microcontroller are presented in detail. A description of the CAN protocol design with message scheduling on the bus is given. Messages with an 11 bit identifier without a data field have been used for the distributed control system synthesis. The time analysis of bus availability/traffic demonstrates the adequacy of the distributed control system Based on the defined messages and 5 presented modes of operation, an algorithm of operation has been formed for every control system module. Finally experimental results are presented that have been obtained from a developed CAN based elevator control system. The conducted tests have confirmed the functionality of the elevator control system.

This paper presents the development of paraplegic muscle model with Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference system (ANFIS). A series of experiments using Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) with different stimulation frequencies, pulse width and pulse duration to investigate the impact on muscle output torque are conducted. The data that is obtained is used to develop the paraplegic muscle model. 500 training data and 300 testing data set are used in the development of muscle model. The muscle model thus developed is validated with clinical data from one paraplegic subject and in comparison with two other muscle models from previous researchers. The ANFIS muscle model is found to be the most accurate muscle model representing paraplegic muscle model. The established model is then used to predict the behaviour of the underlying system and will be used in the future for the design and evaluation of various control strategies.

The problem of constrained infinite-horizon model-predictive control for fuzzy-discrete systems is considered in this paper. New sufficient conditions are proposed in terms of linear-matrix inequalities. Based on the optimal solutions of these sufficient conditions at each sampling instant, we design both parallel-distributed compensation and nonparallel-distributed compensation state-feedback controllers, which can guarantee that the resulting closed-loop fuzzy-discrete system is asymptotically stable. In addition, the fuzzy-feedback controllers meet the specifications for the fuzzy-discrete systems with both input and output constraints. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.

An adaptive methodology is introduced to identify the weights of a general Fuzzy Cognitive Network (FCN). The proposed scheme consists of two hierarchically structured individual identification tasks that are both implemented on-line. The inner task employs a robust integral of the sign error (RISE) observer to approximate the system's unknown nonlinearity. At the higher level, a nonlinear mapping of the observer's output provides an estimation of the linear parametrization of the FCN weights. Exploiting this fact, a standard gradient-based algorithm is proposed as an outer identification task to estimate the FCN weights under a persistence of excitation condition. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. ©2010 IEEE.

By continuing to use fossil fuels we are bound to pollute the atmosphere, and consequently, unwanted greenhouse and climate change effects will come to dominate every part of the earth. Wind power energy represents an interesting alternative to traditional forms of obtaining energy. However, the efficiency of wind power strongly depends on the control methods that play a significant role in eliminating the perturbing factors, decreasing the structural loads and increasing the amount and quality of the energy that is produced. A design of a model based control algorithm for a horizontal wind turbine is proposed. In a model-based control approach, increased model accuracy implies reduced uncertainty. The paper will include an analysis of the advantages that may arise from using such a control technique and also will focus on the robustness of the closed loop system.

This paper presents the elaboration of a compre-hensive Matlab-Simulink virtual environment of a Stewart platform. This simulation tool includes the kinematic and dynamic modeling of the platform, along with the control loops of the actuators and coupled to a trajectory generation module, it also offers complete visualization features through a dedicated graphic user interface. This simulator was modularly designed following open architecture principles, with plug and play modules allowing a global kinematics, dynamics and control of the machine integral analysis. The first part of the paper of the machine integral *** on the features of this simulator, by describing the different available models and tools. Based on this computer-aided control system design environment, then the second part develops a comparison between two different control strategies, on the one hand, the classical PID joint control structure and on the other hand, the Generalized Predictive control (GPC) strategy. Finally, the virtual environment provides time domain results and performance comparison, in addition the spatial tracking error and the disturbance reaction are analyzed for both controllers, showing better accuracy with the GPC one.

Most of state observers implemented in real systems are not able to measure the information continuously. The sliding observers are not an exception. Nevertheless, when state observers are used in numerical applications or even in real systems, one must implement a sampled based observer. This means that the output was obtained by means of a Analogical/Digital Converter. Using a zero order hold we can maintain the data until the next measure. In this form the output implemented in the algorithm is continuous. In this paper, a noel variable-gain super-twisting observer is proposed based on Lyapunov theory. That is, the correction terms varies during the time. This variable gain depends on the error trajectories and known functions that are upper bounds for the disturbances that affect the system. The observer ensures finite time convergence into a boundary layer depending of the sampled period. This structure is applied in a simple pendulum model using several sample periods of time.

This paper describes a new technique in assisting indoor rowing exercise for paraplegics. It combines functional electrical stimulation with an energy storage element. A spring is introduced as an energy storage element that stores energy during the driving phase and transfers energy during recovery phase of rowing stroke. The technique is implemented with a dynamic simulation model. Fuzzy logic control is used to control the knee and elbow trajectories for smooth rowing manoeuvre. The generated level of electrical stimulation for activation of quadriceps and hamstrings muscles are recorded and analysed. In view of good results obtained, it is concluded that the new technique of rowing exercise for paraplegics using spring orthosis with proper rowing manoeuvre significantly contributes to assisting paraplegic indoor rowing exercise.

This paper presents investigations into pendulum test to measure passive knee motion from a paraplegic subject. The test is used to evaluate changes in the knee angular displacement, passive stiffness and viscosity. Then, genetic algorithm (GA) parameter optimization is used with Visual Nastran (Vn4D) to find passive stiffness and viscosity values for modelling the paraplegic leg. The best performance of the Vn4D leg model is achieved with the optimum values of the viscosity and the stiffness equal to 0.0031055 Nms/deg and 0.024244 Nm/deg respectively. The model was found to be the best Vn4D model with actual subject's leg properties to represent paraplegic leg model.

Nowadays the use of the IEC 61131-3 standard is well spread and the number of tool vendors that announce to be IEC 61131-3 standard compliant is increasing. The next step deals with the establishment of design methodologies for implementing distributed applications. Currently, most of the vendors offer a set of proprietary tools as well as their own guidelines for designing distributed applications. The IEC61499 standard tries to fill the gap, defining a generic architecture for designing distributed Industrial Process Measurement and control systems (IPMCSs), based on Functions Block (FB) networks. Currently, there are different tools that allow developing applications following the IEC61499 standard and the majority of them are Java based. They focus mainly on the programming aspects and all of them use the concept of Service Interface Function Blocks (SIFB) as defined in the standard, FBs that must provide the interface between the control software and the hardware or the communication system. But guidelines to implement this type of FBs are provided neither by the standard nor by the available tools. This paper gives the steps to be done to develop a SIFB and the access to distributed I/O via Profibus DP is implemented following these guidelines. Thus, the available IEC61499 compliant software tools can be used to test real applications running with generic I/O hardware. The implementation merges concepts of developing software in C and java programming languages, as both of them are necessary to attach the hardware. © 2009 IFAC.
