Market based approach (MBA) provides communication and coordination for robots in a virtual economy in which they can exchange tasks and resources for payment. Furthermore, trades are enabled via market mechanisms such as auction protocols in which an auctioneer is able to determine the robots best capable of achieving the tasks being offered. In this paper we purpose a modification of MBA for task allocation. This approach consists of auction announcement, bid valuation and submission and winner determination. Several scenarios where robots need to visit particular locations with time and range of wireless network constraints are used for approach verification. Additionally, the results obtained by this approach are compared with results from approach in control and coordination of mobile motes (CCMM).

Estimation of Passive Stiffness and Viscosity in Paraplegic: A Dynamic Leg Model in Visual Nastran

Abstract This paper presents investigations into pendulum test to measure passive knee motion from a paraplegic subject. The test is used to evaluate changes in the knee angular displacement, passive stiffness and viscosity. Then, genetic algorithm (GA) parameter optimization is used with Visual Nastran (Vn4D) to find passive stiffness and viscosity values for modelling the paraplegic leg. The best performance of the Vn4D leg model is achieved with the optimum values of the viscosity and the stiffness equal to 0.0031055 Nms/deg and 0.024244 Nm/deg respectively. The model was found to be the best Vn4D model with actual subject's leg properties to represent paraplegic leg model.

Steel making is known as a complex manufacturing industrial process. Automation of the process represents a challenge. Empirical mathematical modeling of the process was used to design mill equipment, ensure productivity and service quality. This modeling approach shows many problems associated to complexity and time consumption. Soft computing techniques show significant modeling capabilities on handling complex nonlinear systems modeling. In this paper, we explore the use of Takagi-Sugeno (TS) technique to develop fuzzy models for the Hot-Rolling industrial nonlinear process. We propose three models for the rolling force, torque and slab temperature. A set of rules and membership functions which represents the dynamical relationship between the input and output of these models shall be presented. The performance of the fuzzy models will be compared to the known empirical models for the hot rolling system. Experimental data measured from the Ere˜gli Iron and Steel Factory in Turkey shall be used for the verification of the model outstanding performance.

Abstract This paper describes a new technique in assisting indoor rowing exercise for paraplegics. It combines functional electrical stimulation with an energy storage element. A spring is introduced as an energy storage element that stores energy during the driving phase and transfers energy during recovery phase of rowing stroke. The technique is implemented with a dynamic simulation model. Fuzzy logic control is used to control the knee and elbow trajectories for smooth rowing manoeuvre. The generated level of electrical stimulation for activation of quadriceps and hamstrings muscles are recorded and analysed. In view of good results obtained, it is concluded that the new technique of rowing exercise for paraplegics using spring orthosis with proper rowing manoeuvre significantly contributes to assisting paraplegic indoor rowing exercise.

The purpose of this paper is to analyse and implement PI control for the permanent magnet DC motor. The control algorithm is realised using Siemens S7-200 programmable logic controller (PLC). The complex motor system is composed of DC motor, driver and tachogenerator. The main objective is to achieve a satisfactory time response of the system output under disturbances like death zone, nonlinearity, measurement noise and external load acting. The PI controller is designed in the programming environment on a previously identified nonlinear motor system. Then the PI controller is embedded into the S7-200 PLC. The effectiveness of this controller are tested in both simulation mode and experiments.

In this paper we present a design and implementation of a modern elevator control system. The conventional elevator control system has several disadvantages (complicated circuits, a large number of wires, sensitivity to noise, low level security, etc). An alternative to conventional elevator control systems is a distributed elevator control system. This paper describes a network-based elevator control system via controller area network (CAN). We will show the design of a CAN network with message scheduling. This paper presents the results obtained from the experiment on a real model, i.e. the CAN based elevator control system.

This paper presents an intelligent solution of wireless monitoring of a computerized city using SafeMobile units. The system is using a wireless network of vehicular units in order to communicate with a central gateway. The final user is accessing a software application for receiving real-time information from the monitored units and send commands. The major achievement of such a system is reducing the time in emergency situations.

The paper presents an extension of NetPy, a network traffic visualization tool using NetFlow records. NetPy offers traffic visualization as well as a traffic analysis, which is very useful for the network administrators. NetPy has been re-designed to include a better graphical user interface to make the application easier to use and to present the information in the best way possible. The new version also improves the former analysis modules and offers new ways for the administrator to monitor and control events in the network, such as a comparative analysis. The application also integrates a new advanced intrusion detection module. The attacks that this module is able to detect will be presented, as well as the methods used. The denial of service, PortScan and custom defined attacks, based on the number of connections, the number of packets or the payload between hosts can be detected with a very good accuracy. The new NetPy version has been developed by a team from Politehnica University of Bucharest in collaboration with the department of Computer Science of the University of Wisconsin-Madison U.S.A.

IEC61499 Service Interface Function Blocks to Access Decentralized Peripherals with Profibus DP

Nowadays the use of the IEC 61131-3 standard is well spread and the number of tool vendors that announce to be IEC 61131-3 standard compliant is increasing. The next step deals with the establishment of design methodologies for implementing distributed applications. Currently, most of the vendors offer a set of proprietary tools as well as their own guidelines for designing distributed applications. The IEC61499 standard tries to fill the gap, defining a generic architecture for designing distributed Industrial Process Measurement and control systems (IPMCSs), based on Functions Block (FB) networks. Currently, there are different tools that allow developing applications following the IEC61499 standard and the majority of them are Java based. They focus mainly on the programming aspects and all of them use the concept of Service Interface Function Blocks (SIFB) as defined in the standard, FBs that must provide the interface between the control software and the hardware or the communication system. But guidelines to implement this type of FBs are provided neither by the standard nor by the available tools. This paper gives the steps to be done to develop a SIFB and the access to distributed I/O via Profibus DP is implemented following these guidelines. Thus, the available IEC61499 compliant software tools can be used to test real applications running with generic I/O hardware. The implementation merges concepts of developing software in C and java programming languages, as both of them are necessary to attach the hardware.

Wind Power Plants (WPP) is the fastest growing energy sector. WPP consisting from a single turbine to as many as several hundred turbines. The acceptance of wind-generated power by the financial and developer communities from Romania as a viable enterprise is influenced by the risk associated with the capital equipment reliability. Increased risk or at least the perception of increased risk is generally accompanied by increased financial fees or interest rates. Wind turbine system reliability is considered to be an important component in any wind energy project. All above has developed the interest and need for maintenance services for wind turbines (WT). The aim of this paper is to identify the matters from maintenance in WPP areas and to do a literature review of the major aspects in a wind turbine that should be monitored.
