To enhance the performance of permanent magnet synchronous motor drive, a sensorless direct torque control (DTC) scheme based on adaptive backstepping control is proposed to control the torque and stator flux linkage, which use five-order permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) dynamic model in the stationary frame with stator currents, rotor flux linkage and rotor speed. In the proposed scheme, the reference voltages were obtained by a designed model reference adaptive backstepping controller to drive PMSM. By combining the adaptive control, the system possesses the advantages of good transient performance and the robustness to the parametric uncertainties and load torque disturbance. Moreover, a adaptive flux linkage observer is designed to provide the simultaneous estimation of the rotor flux linkage and speed. The simulation results show that the designed controller can guarantee the globally asymptotically stability of system, and the system achieve excellent speed estimation and speed tracking performance.

In this paper, control of parallel single-phase inverters in direct-quadrature(DQ) rotating frame based on droop method is proposed. For each inverter, a secondary orthogonal imaginary circuit is created to provide the second phase required for the transformation; thus a DQ model of the inverter is obtained. The DQ transformation provides a time-invariant model of the inverter which makes the control design similar to that of dc-dc converters. The recognition of this analogy is important in that all of advanced dc-dc converters control techniques that have been previously developed can be applied to the control parallel inverters. The controller then is designed in DQ frame. Theoretically, infinite loop gain can be achieved in DQ rotating frame resulting in the elimination of the steady state error at the fundamental frequency of the inverter. The output impedance of the inverters is also considered, to ensure the decoupling between active and reactive power control using droop method. Simulation results are provided to prove the concept.

The structure and coordination of the electrical power system (EPS) are presented in this paper with respect to three concepts: system theory, systems analysis and multi-agent techniques. The above mentioned concepts are discussed approaching the EPS behaviour and functioning based on actual problems regarding the globalisation of the energy production and transportation, integration of different renewable sources of energy with the conventional power systems and the safety aspects of connecting the distributed generation to the interconnected large system.

Sensors, actuators or physical components in engineering systems are often subjected to un-permitted or unexpected deviations from usual operating conditions. With a relatively small computing effort and with good results to unmeasured disturbances, the parity equations build for a specific process are proven to be very useful to provide fault detection residuals in order to identify the fault.

A new prototype of self-validating pressure sensor is described. The elastic body of the transducer is based on circular-flat diaphragm structure. Eight groups of strain gauges are distributed on the diaphragm. One group of metal strain gauge with little temperature drift is used as primary pressure sensor, the other seven groups of semiconductor strain gauges with high sensitivity are used as calibration references. Consistency checking is used to detect sensor fault. The outputs of self-validating pressure sensor including validated measurement value (VMV) of pressure, validated uncertainty (VU) of pressure and measurement value status (MVS) of pressure are calculated using the high consistency data. A new fault diagnosis method based on wavelet packet decomposition feature extraction and support vector machine multi-classification is used to identify six sensor fault status. A double DSPs system is implemented to acquire the output signal and complete self-validating methods. The experiment results show that the designed pressure sensor prototype implements the self-validating function. It can detect fault in real-time and identify sensor status with high accuracy. © 2008 IEEE.

This paper presents an extended path planning method for obstacle avoidance for mobile robots using auxiliary positions. The desired path connects a given start position to a target position under avoidance of static obstacles. The corners of the rectangles that cover the obstacles serve as the auxiliary positions. The extended path planning uses the bounding rectangle with minimal area as a basis of simple bounding rectangle. Thus the accessible action area which is available for the path planning becomes larger and the path planning can be done more flexibly. The results of this method will also be discussed using MATLAB simulations and an implementation as part of the development of a system for fully automated storekeeping.

control allocation problems, in which optimal actuator values are assigned based on desired control actions and actuator constraints, are typically formulated as constrained optimization problems. Initially, only approximate solutions to the problems were deemed tractable for real-time applications. Recently however, active set algorithms have been identified as a means for solving control allocation problems in real-time applications. In this paper a modified active set algorithm for the solution of bound-constrained least-squares problems is presented, which has numerous advantages particularly for time-varying control allocation problems. A vehicle dynamics control system for rollover mitigation is used as an example.

With the wide spread of video usage in many fields of our lives, it becomes very important to develop new techniques for video denoising. Spatial video denoising using wavelet transform has been the focus of the current researches as it requires less computation and more suitable for real-time applications. Two specific techniques for spatial video denoising using wavelet transform are considered in this work: 2D Discrete Wavelet Transform (2D DWT) and 2D Dual Tree Complex Wavelet Transform (2D DTCWT). Each of these techniques has its advantages and disadvantages. The first technique gives less quality at high levels of noise but consumes less time while the second gives high quality video while consuming long. In this work, we introduce an intelligent denoising system that makes a tradeoff between the quality of the denoised video and the time required for denoising. The system first estimates the noise level in the video frame then accordingly chooses the proper of the two denoising techniques to apply on the frame. The simulation results show that the proposed system is more suitable for real-time applications where the time is critical while giving high quality videos especially at low to moderate levels of noise.

In this paper an alternative approach to model predictive control is presented. In traditional MPC a finite horizon open loop optimal control problem is solved in each sampling instance. When uncertainties such as computational delays are present, one can encounter problems. We propose to parametrize the control sequence in each sampling instant in terms of a linear feedback controller, i.e. in each sample a dynamic feedback compensator is computed. Thus, if computational delays are present the control system runs in closed loop, decreasing the need for ad hoc solutions used in traditional MPC.
