Masonry arch bridges are an integral part of the European transportation infrastructure. Regular inspections are essential for preserving the historical significance of these bridges and ensuring their safe operation. Despite recent advancements in assessment techniques, monitoring masonry arch bridges remains a difficult and essential field of research. This article describes field tests conducted in Gavirate, Italy, to preliminary understand the dynamic response of a masonry arch rail bridge to train-induced moving loads, as a proof of concept study. The objective of this field investigation is to quantify the dynamic strain induced by train moving loads and to reveal the dynamic behaviors of the masonry arch bridge using a novel distributed fiber optical sensing-based technique. The results may provide a useful guideline for monitoring masonry arch bridges using distributed fiber optical sensing. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

With the soaring interest in understanding the dynamics of human body skeletons for applications such as action recognition and video understanding, the significance of precise 3D key-point detection has become increasingly prominent. Despite the advancements, existing approaches struggle to address the issues of occlusions and limited annotated data. This paper proposes a novel framework integrating a multilevel attention mechanism and weakly supervised 3D key-point generation to tackle these prevalent issues, enhancing both the accuracy and efficiency of human pose estimation. © 2023 IEEE.

UPB at IberLEF-2023 AuTexTification: Detection of Machine-Generated Text using Transformer Ensembles

This paper describes the solutions submitted by the UPB team to the AuTexTification shared task, featured as part of IberLEF-2023. Our team participated in the first subtask, identifying text documents produced by large language models instead of humans. The organizers provided a bilingual dataset for this subtask, comprising English and Spanish texts covering multiple domains, such as legal texts, social media posts, and how-to articles. We experimented mostly with deep learning models based on Transformers, as well as training techniques such as multi-task learning and virtual adversarial training to obtain better results. We submitted three runs, two of which consisted of ensemble models. Our best-performing model achieved macro F1-scores of 66.63% on the English dataset and 67.10% on the Spanish dataset. © 2023, CC BY.

This paper presents a refined complexity calculus model: r-Complexity, a new asymptotic notation that offers better complexity feedback for similar programs than the traditional Bachmann-Landau notation, providing subtle insights even for algorithms that are part of the same conventional complexity class. The architecture-dependent metric represents an enhancement that provides better sensitivity with respect to discrete analysis. © 2021 IEEE.

Brain-Computer Interface technology (BCI) evolved since 70', from a project made for studying brain affection to an approach of giving the ability to people with massive muscular affection. The basis of BCI is the electroencephalography technique (EEG) which captures brain signals from neuronal activity using electrodes placed on the scalp. These signals are interpreted as commands that can be used to control applications or external devices. EEG non-invasive approach is widely preferred due to non-critical procedures, and it doesn't need or require surgery which can be expensive and dangerous. The current prosthetic leg could be expensive, heavy, and hard to control by disabled people. To determine the functional and non-functional requirements of the user, and learn how users wish to engage with the prosthetic lower limb intelligent system, a quantitative questionnaire is offered in this study. The participant's responses will be considered the basis of the system design. The goal of this quantitative questionnaire is to build a low-cost, lightweight, and intelligent functional bionic prosthetic leg that meets the functional and non-functional requirements of the user. This system will be controlled by mind commands using a dedicated neuro headset. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper evaluates both the theoretical and empirical log-normal models for Wi-Fi fingerprint mapping in indoor positioning systems. Wi-Fi fingerprinting, leveraging the ubiquitous IEEE 802.11 protocol, offers a practical solution for indoor localization where Global Positioning system (GPS) is ineffective. It involves generating empirical data by systematically measuring Wi-Fi Received Signal Strength (RSS) within a complex indoor environment and formulating a log-normal path loss model to predict signal behavior. A comparative analysis was conducted between the theoretical model, calibrated with empirical RSS data, and the actual RSS measurements. The results showed that while the theoretical model captured overall signal propagation trends, the empirical data revealed variations due to multipath effects and environmental obstacles. It demonstrated the practical use of Wi-Fi fingerprint mapping, theoretical modeling, and comparative analysis. The findings underscore the importance of empirical validation in refining theoretical models and optimizing deployment strategies for accurate and reliable indoor positioning. Future research should focus on mitigating multipath effects and enhancing the theoretical model accuracy through optimized access point (AP) placement and advanced signal processing techniques.

This study proposes methods that can be used to examine and interpret comments that users have made after watching videos on YouTube on a particular topic. YouTube tutorials are very popular among young people. They have become an important pillar in informal education, thus contributing to the rapid acquisition of skills and knowledge. Under these circumstances, we were interested in analysing the YouTube videos comments, knowing that the platform has a continuous increase in popularity, which is also due to the opportunities of sharing them. Since ChatGPT-themed YouTube videos have seen a significant surge in popularity since 2022, we were interested to analyse some videos that approach the topics of 'ChatGPT, AI clone, AI robot and Deep Learning.' © 2024 IEEE.

We introduce a method to evaluate the similarities between classes of objects based on the confusion matrices coming from the multi-class machine learning (ML) predictors that operate in the vector space generated by the classes. Operation in the confusion domain allows us to use the distance as evaluation metric of the closeness of the relevant properties carried by the classes. We applied the method to semiquantitatively evaluate the effects of X-ray and carbon ion radiation on cultured SW1353 chondrosarcoma cells with respect to the non-irradiated reference. We prove that it is possible to draw useful information on the strength of cells nuclei changes. © 2025, Politechnica University of Bucharest. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a full degrees-of-freedom (DOFs) robust control design for a nonlinear quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operating under bounded disturbances. Second-order sliding modes controllers (SOSMCs) are designed so that the quadrotor UAV can follow a 3D trajectory in the presence of model uncertainties, underactuation, as well as external disturbances that may be matched or mismatched, and vanishing or nonvanishing. The stability analysis of the closed-loop system is presented via the Lyapunov method, showing the finite-time convergence of the system trajectories to the sliding surfaces, as well as the finite-time convergence of the quadrotor position and attitude to their reference values. The high-gain adaptation (HGA) method is adopted in the SOSMC technique, called SOSMC-HGA, to alleviate the chattering phenomenon. Simulation studies in different scenarios demonstrate that the SOSMC technique exhibits superior tracking performance and robustness properties compared to concurrent control methods for tracking reference trajectories of quadrotor UAVs. The simulation results confirm that SOSMC-HGA significantly attenuates the chattering phenomenon in control signals and system states, which is an important improvement, as it increases the safety of UAVs and reduces power consumption.

The objective of this paper is trajectory tracking for an aerial vehicle in presence of wind disturbances. The approach first involves linearizing the non-linear model of the aerial vehicle around operating points chosen along the trajectory to be followed. Then, a proposed modified version of robust min-max model predictive control is employed by using only one linearized model along the prediction horizon. The trajectory is generated using the concept of differential flatness. The simulation results of the proposed approach show that the aerial vehicle effectively manages to follow the trajectory under wind disturbances. © 2021 IEEE.
