There is an increasing need for effective control of systems with complex dynamics, particularly through data-driven approaches. System Level Synthesis (SLS) has emerged as a powerful framework that facilitates the control of large-scale systems while accounting for model uncertainties. SLS approaches are currently limited to linear systems and time-varying linear control policies, thus limiting the class of achievable control strategies. We introduce a novel closed-loop parameterization for time-varying affine control policies, extending the SLS framework to a broader class of systems and policies. We show that the closed-loop behavior under affine policies can be equivalently characterized using past system trajectories, enabling a fully data-driven formulation. This parameterization seamlessly integrates affine policies into optimal control problems, allowing for a closed-loop formulation of general Model Predictive control (MPC) problems. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to extend SLS to affine policies in both model-based and data-driven settings, enabling an equivalent formulation of MPC problems using closed-loop maps. We validate our approach through numerical experiments, demonstrating that our model-based and data-driven affine SLS formulations achieve performance on par with traditional model-based MPC. © 2025, CC BY.

A meta-reinforcement learning method for adaptive payload transportation with variations

The safe transport of cable-suspended payloads by a group of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) depends on their capacity to effectively respond to fluctuations in the dynamics caused by external variations, such as wind gusts. For group transportation with obstacles, internal variations, such as changes in formation, can also alter the space occupancy of the system related to collision detection. However, traditional adaptive learning methods are challenging to adapt to these two variations. In this paper, we present a learning-based method for collision-free dual-UAV–payload transportation in the presence of varied wind force and formation change. It consists of an adaptive trajectory tracking controller based on meta-model-based reinforcement learning with online adaptation and a novel correction policy, and a path planner that can sample collision-free goal states of the system for the controller based on the meta-collision predictor. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed trajectory tracking controller outperforms state-of-the-art model-free, model-based, and variational inference methods in terms of payload tracking error reduction and robustness when dealing with the variations mentioned above. Specifically, the proposed controller reduces the average payload tracking error to less than 0.1 metres in most tasks without obstacles. Furthermore, by following the adapted paths generated by the path planner, the trajectory tracking controller can effectively track the payload while ensuring collision-free safety of the dual-UAV–payload system during navigation among obstacles. The success rate of the proposed method is more than 80% in all scenarios with obstacles. Convergence rates for an inexact linearized ADMM for nonsmooth nonconvex optimization with nonlinear equality constraints

In this paper, we consider nonconvex optimization problems with nonsmooth nonconvex objective function and nonlinear equality constraints. We assume that both the objective function and the functional constraints can be separated into 2 blocks. To solve this problem, we introduce a new inexact linearized alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm. Specifically, at each iteration, we linearize the smooth part of the objective function and the nonlinear part of the functional constraints within the augmented Lagrangian and add a dynamic quadratic regularization. We then compute the new iterate of the block associated with nonlinear constraints inexactly. This strategy yields subproblems that are easily solvable and their (inexact) solutions become the next iterates. Using Lyapunov arguments, we establish convergence guarantees for the iterates of our method toward an ϵ-first-order solution within O(ϵ−2) iterations. Moreover, we demonstrate that in cases where the problem data exhibit e.g., semi-algebraic properties or more general the KL condition, the entire sequence generated by our algorithm converges, and we provide convergence rates. To validate both the theory and the performance of our algorithm, we conduct numerical simulations for several nonlinear model predictive control and matrix factorization problems. © 2025, CC BY.

Data-Driven Reachability Analysis for Piecewise Affine System

Hybrid systems play a crucial role in modeling real-world applications where discrete and continuous dynamics interact, including autonomous vehicles, power systems, and traffic networks. Safety verification for these systems requires determining whether system states can enter unsafe regions under given initial conditions and uncertainties—a question directly addressed by reachability analysis. However, hybrid systems present unique difficulties because their state space is divided into multiple regions with distinct dynamic models, causing traditional data-driven methods to produce inadequate over-approximations of reachable sets at region boundaries where dynamics change abruptly. This paper introduces a novel approach using hybrid zonotopes for data-driven reachability analysis of piecewise affine systems. Our method addresses the boundary transition problem by developing computational algorithms that calculate the family of set models guaranteed to contain the true system trajectories. Additionally, we extend and evaluate three methods for set-based estimation that account for input-output data with measurement noise. © 2025, CC BY.

Developing a modelling environment of spacecraft solar array in low Earth orbit using real-time telemetry data

Spacecraft solar arrays convert sunlight into electrical energy to fulfil the energy requirements of various missions. This work proposes a comprehensive environment for accurate power operation predictions. Specifically, this environment simulates the behaviour of a body-mounted solar array. Furthermore, the designing and modelling processes of the solar array require considering different technical and practical constraints posed by the space environment. These challenges necessitate a thorough evaluation of all potential sources of losses and degradation. Compared to conventional approaches, our novel SSA model incorporates the complete spacecraft mission design scenario, thus it incorporates the operational cyclogram and power budget calculation. To substantiate our proposed method, telemetry data from the commercial LEOS-50 platform is leveraged to develop an experimental, mathematical, and thermal in-orbit model based on GaAs technology. This approach stands out for its exceptional accuracy in predicting the output power characteristics of solar panels. Therefore, it ensures achieving mission requirements from inception to completion in the beginning-of-life and end-of-life stages. The results demonstrate the success of the SSA operation in converting sunlight into electrical energy with a high conversion rate. © 2025 The Authors

This paper presents an investigation into the development of open-loop and closed-loop control strategies for flexible manipulator systems. Shaped torque inputs, including Gaussian-shaped and low-pass (Butterworth and elliptic) filtered input torque functions, are developed and used in an open-loop configuration and their performance studied in comparison to a bang-bang input torque through experimentation on a single-link flexible manipulator system. Closed-loop control strategies that use both collocated (hub angle and hub velocity) and non-collocated (end-point acceleration) feedback are then proposed. A collocated proportional and derivative (PD) control is first developed and its performance studied through experimentation. The collocated control is then extended to incorporate, additionally, non-collocated feedback through a proportional integral derivative (PID) configuration. The performance of the hybrid collocated and non-collocated control strategy thus developed is studied through experimentation. Experimental results verifying the performance of the developed control strategies are presented and discussed.

Nonlinear optimal control of rotating flexible shaft in active magnetic bearings

The optimal control of nonlinear systems has been studied for years by many researchers. However, the application of optimal control problem to nonlinear non-affine systems needs more attention. In this paper we propose an optimal control design technique for a class of nonlinear and control non-affine equations. The dynamic equations of a flexible shaft supported by a pair of active magnetic bearings (AMBs) are used as the nonlinear control non-affine equations. Mathematical model for the flexible beam is chosen to be the well known Timoshenko beam model, which takes rotary inertia and shear deformations into account, and it is assumed that the shaft is supported by two frictionless bearings at the ends. The effective control of such systems is extremely important for very high angular velocity shafts which are a feature of many modern machines. The control must be able to cope with unbalanced masses and hence be very robust. We shall approach the problem by discretising the Timoshenko beam model and using standard difference formulae to develop a finite-dimensional model of the system. Then we use a recently developed technique for controlling nonlinear systems by reducing the problem to a sequence of linear time-varying (LTV) systems. An optimal control designed for each approximating linear, time-varying system and recent results show that this method will converge uniformly on compact time intervals to the optimal solution.

An accelerated randomized Bregman-Kaczmarz method for strongly convex linearly constraint optimization

In this paper, we propose a randomized accelerated method for the minimization of a strongly convex function under linear constraints. The method is of Kaczmarz-type, i.e. it only uses a single linear equation in each iteration. To obtain acceleration we build on the fact that the Kaczmarz method is dual to a coordinate descent method. We use a recently proposed acceleration method for the randomized coordinate descent and transfer it to the primal space. This method inherits many of the attractive features of the accelerated coordinate descent method, including its worst-case convergence rates. A theoretical analysis of the convergence of the proposed method is given. Identifying different vehicle types can help manage traffic more efficiently, reduce congestion, and improve public safety. This study aims to create a classification model that can recognize vehicle types based on the sound of passing vehicles. To achieve this, a database of raw audio files containing 1763 samples from two sources was assembled. The time-domain signals were converted to a time-frequency representation using the short-time Fourier transform to generate Mel Spectrograms. Mel-frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs) were also generated using the discrete cosine transform. In our experiments we compared these approaches. Since the data was imbalanced we applied online augmentation. Based on the literature review, we chose a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier because it is particularly well suited for analyzing large datasets due to its automatic feature extraction, parameter sharing and sparsity. The results showed that Mel Spectrograms were more effective for audio data preprocessing in this particular use case, achieving the highest accuracy of 0.875 and the highest f1-score of 0.877 compared to MFCCs. © 2025 IEEE Computer Society.
