Neural networks have proven practical for a synergistic combination of advanced control techniques. This work analyzes the implementation of rectified linear unit neural networks to achieve constrained control in differentially flat systems. Specifically, the class of flat systems enjoys the benefit of feedback linearizability, i.e., the systems can be linearized by means of a proper variable transformation. However, the price for linearizing the dynamics is that the constraint descriptions are distorted geometrically. Our results show that, by using neural networks, these constraints can be represented as a union of polytopes, enabling the use of mixed-integer programming tools to guarantee constraint satisfaction. We further analyze the integration of the characterization into efficient settings such as control Lyapunov function-based and model predictive control (MPC). Interestingly, this description also allows us to explicitly compute the solution of the MPC problem for the nonlinear system. Harnessing the power of wind and waves for renewable energy production has become vital in the quest for sustainable electricity generation. The fusion of Floating Offshore Wind Turbines (FOWTs) and Oscillating Water Columns (OWCs) has introduced a groundbreaking concept of hybrid offshore platforms, offering immense potential for energy absorption, reduced dynamic response, load mitigation, and improved cost efficiency. The primary goals of this study revolve around two key objectives: (i) the development of a regression-based modeling technique for the hybrid aero-hydro-elastic-servo-mooring coupled numerical system, and (ii) the implementation of a customized fuzzy-based control mechanism to ensure platform stability. To achieve these objectives, computational Machine Learning (ML) tools, specifically Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), are utilized to replicate the behavior of the detailed numerical model of the FOWTs integrated with OWCs. Subsequently, a Fuzzy Logic control (FLC) scheme is employed to establish a structural controller that effectively mitigates unwanted vibrations. The experimental results confirm the potential of ANN-based modeling as a simpler yet effective alternative to complicated nonlinear NREL-5MW FOWT dynamical models. Furthermore, the use of the FLC system enhances platform stability in a variety of wind and wave conditions.

An important aspect related to the effects of agricultural activities on the environment is represented by the nutrient loss in water and air (specifically nitrogen). The interactions between catchments hydrological processes, management of farm activities, climate changes and nitrogen losses constitute a complex phenomenon yet not well understood, being an important concern from the sustainable agriculture perspective. Nitrogen can be lost with water as leaching or runoff, or as gas as ammonia volatilization. Nitrous oxide (N2O) is particularly problematic because it is also a powerful greenhouse gas. The goal of the current article is to present innovative digital techniques to advance in understanding of this phenomena through an Information System that integrates Artificial Intelligence techniques such as Semantic Technologies and Machine Learning (ML) into Cyber-Physical systems (CPS) to support smart farming and sustainable agriculture.

This paper develops a performance improvement control strategy based on residual generator to improve the control performance of the multi-inverter parallel system in the presence of load disturbances and line parameter perturbation. This study establishes the state space models of the electrical network and inverters to analyze the performance degradation issues. The model-match technique and multi-agent consistency algorithm are used to design the dynamic and steady-state performance improvement controllers, respectively. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

To enhance the operational flexibility of active distribution network (ADN) with high proportion renewable energy, this paper proposes a flexibility resource planning model considering the optimal dispatch of demand response. Firstly, the flexibility in supply side and demand side are analyzed. Then, a two-layer planning model of flexibility resources is established, which includes the planning layer and operating layer. The planning layer introduces the system comprehensive security index to evaluate the system security, aiming at the optimal annual comprehensive cost of the system. The operation layer introduces the flexibility insufficiency rate as the system flexibility evaluation index, and the network loss and renewable energy curtailment are counted as economic penalties, which is aiming at the optimal annual operation cost of the system. The proposed planning model is solved with particle swarm optimization algorithm. Case studies on the IEEE 33-node distribution system show that the proposed model can effectively reduce the network loss and the renewable generation curtailment.

Two new modifications of second-order low-frequency discrete-analog filters (DAFs) based on switched capacitors with two electronic keys have been developed and investigated. The first modification contains a resistive signal adder based on a buffer amplifier, in the second modification the signal adder is implemented on a differential difference operational amplifier. The basic formulas for the transmission coefficient at zero frequency and pole frequency, and also a frequency and attenuation of the pole are given. The transmission coefficient of new circuits in the passband does not depend on the capacitances of the frequency-setting capacitors. Computer modeling was performed in the Micro-Cap environment, which confirms the coincidence of the calculated main parameters of the DAF and their time characteristics. The developed DAFs were studied at various input signal frequencies, which differ by several orders of magnitude, including the low, medium and high frequency ranges. It is shown that the graph of the DAF output signal has a “step” character, which corresponds to the physical processes of signal conversion in filters of the class under consideration. The low parametric sensitivity of presented DAF circuits is achieved by the fact that the pole attenuation and transmission coefficient of such DAFs cease to depend on the parameters of the tuning elements.

This paper tackles the challenging issue of collision avoidance among multiple dynamical agents, a problem known for its non-convex nature and computational complexity. Our proposed solution involves decomposing the space into time-varying Voronoi cells with buffer zones, exploiting the versatility of B-splines to reconfigure trajectories when collisions are predicted. This approach is integrated into a Model Predictive control (MPC) framework, implemented in a distributed manner where agents communicate predicted control point sequences defining the B-spline curves. Through simulation testing across various scenarios, our approach demonstrates significant promise, paving the way for experimental validation and real-world applications. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This work presents a novel and practical real-time switching control policy for the dynamic hard shoulder running lane control on motorways. Using the hard shoulder as a running lane in peak traffic periods increases the motorway capacity at bottlenecks, increasing throughput and avoiding the onset of congestion. The proposed policy enables a smooth switching on of the hard shoulder lane at peak periods. It is based on properties of the fundamental diagram of motorway traffic with easy and unambiguous interpretation and implementation by traffic operators. Simulation analysis on a 5 km-long motorway stretch with three lanes and one hard shoulder lane using the AIMSUN microscopic simulator is demonstrated. The results have showed that the proposed switching control improves the motorway throughput compared to rival control schemes.

This paper sets out to develop an efficient probabilistic optimal power flow (POPF) algorithm to assess the influence of wind power on power grid. Given a set of wind data at multiple sites, the marginal distribution is fitted by a newly developed generalized Johnson system, the dependence structure of wind speeds is matched by the flexible Liouville copula. In order to lower the computational burden for solving POPF model, a Lattice sampling technique is developed to generate wind samples at multiple sites, and a Logistic mixture model is proposed to fit distributions of POPF outputs, which can quantify the effect of wind speed uncertainty on power grid. Finally, the proposed methods are illustrated by case studies on the IEEE 118-bus system. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This study aims to compare the effectiveness of different Pharmacokinetic-Pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) models for administering Propofol and Remifentanil, two critical agents in anesthesia. Initially, different PK models were introduced: one for Propofol based on the Schnider model and another for Remifentanil using the Minto model. Alternatively, both drugs were modeled using the Eleveld models. The PK-PD models were integrated into a closed-loop control system using model predictive control (MPC) with disturbances to control the Bispectral index (BIS) and the Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale (RASS). The methodology involved simulating the anesthetic agents in the open-source patient simulator (2 inputs, 2 outputs) with 12 patient datasets in a controlled environment to simulate the patient response variability, allowing for a detailed analysis of the model's performance in maintaining optimal drug concentrations. The primary focus was on the system's ability to adapt to surgical disturbances, a key challenge in anesthesia management, and whether a different modeling of drugs can have an impact on their effects. The results indicated significant differences in the performance of the two models configurations. The Eleveld model for Propofol showed less usage of drugs to maintain the desired BIS value. Concluding that this comparative analysis offers a valuable reference for selecting appropriate modeling approaches in the development of advanced control strategies in anesthesia.
