Jr.: received his BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his MS degree in Product Design from Illinois Institute of Technology. Early in his career Mr. Luedeke joined General Motors Corporation as a designer responsible for development of people mover and rail rapid transit systems. From 1964 to 1974 he was with Hughes Aircraft Company. At Hughes he performed analyses and developed designs for a wide variety of program and proposal efforts such as: High Speed Ground Transportation (DOT) Task Force Command Center (NAVY) Panama Canal Marine Traffic Control Center (Panama Canal Co.) Royal Iranian Navy Command Center (Iran) Tactical Information Processing and Interpretation Center (Air Force) and WALLEYE CONDOR and PHOENIX Missile Systems (NAVY). He also had marketing development responsibilities related to the diversification of Hughes resources in civil business areas such as: Automatic train control (WMATA BARTD SCRTD) water/sewage treatment plant automation (Santa Clara County) Aqueduct Control (SWR) Hydrometeorological data collection (BPA WMO) and Salton Sea basin systems analysis (Dept. of the Interior). He was responsible for combat system integration for the Hughes 2000T Surface Effect Ship (SES) proposal. He also conducted detailed studies concerning ship flexure for the Improved Point Defense Target Acquisition System Program and for the definition of operational High Energy Laser weapon installations on a series of conventional monohulls (DLG DD and CVN). Since 1974 Mr. Luedeke has been employed at RMI Inc. (formerly Rohr Marine Inc.). During this time he has held several positions. His responsibilities have included directing a number of studies on advanced SES concepts managing activities defining mission/cost effectiveness of military and commercial SES's including defining the operational benefits and enhanced survivability characteristics of cargo SES's for high speed military sealiftfor NA TO and Southeast Asia

This paper will present the results of a marketing, engineering, and economic analysis of advanced marine vehicles done by IMA Resources, Inc. and RMI, Inc., in support of a Maritime Administration project to study “Multimode Express Shipping”. The study was conducted in 1981 and examined the economic benefits of using advanced marine vehicles as express cargo vessels in domestic and international service. Commodity characteristics, desirable express carrier rates, and potential high payoff service and route alternatives were identified. Advanced marine vehicles were surveyed and sized to meet desirable deadweight and block speed objectives. The costs of operating these craft on a variety of trade routes were calculated using an advanced marine vehicle economic analysis program. Revenues, expenses, break-even, profit and loss, cash flow requirements, tax summary and economic indicators (i.e., cost/ton – mile, etc.) were projected over the expected life of the vehicles as was return on investment. Traffic density and market penetration considerations narrowed the field of choice to smaller sized advanced marine vehicle carriers (i.e., 50 and 250 ton deadweight) and to three international and five domestic routes.

This paper studies a measurement, evaluation, and control system of communication-and-formation process of concept (especially morality concept) in education. The system is illustrated as a block diagram and is studied from a viewpoint of multiinput-multioutput, interactive and fuzzy type feedback control system, where we can correspond class pupils to a controlled object, and teacher's final concept structure and core-sentence structure to a desired output and an operating input (controlling input), respectively. We have investigated the model relations between concept structures and core-sentence structures, which greatly helped the teacher to design both a lesson plan outline and its following “lesson plan" for the classwork, and also to practice the classwork itself. A computer program for test data processing is developed to offer a detailed and better feedback information for the teacher in a few minutes.

This paper presents a new method for calculating a rational transfer function matrix using a Walsh expansion of the impulse response matrix. The algorithm proposed appears to be computationally convenient owing to certain properties of the Walsh functions. An example is given to illustrate the method.

The paper describes a simple frequency-domain method for the eigenvalue assignment of linear time-invariant multivariable 2-dimensional systems by means of state and output feedback. Necessary and sufficient conditions are established for single-input systems, whereas for the multi-input case, an equivalent single-input-system approach is employed to treat the problem.

This paper considers the problem of matching a system under control to a model using output feedback when both the given system and the model are described by nonparametric models, such as the impulse response matrix. Conditions are established for exact matching, the problem being reduced to that of solving a linear system of equations. The present paper constitutes the first results in non-parametric model matching which appear to be very suitable for practical applications.

This paper presents a new method for synthesising decoupling controllers for linear time-invariant multivariable systems. The novel approach proposed is based on the idea of formulating, and subsequently solving, the decoupling problem as an exact model-matching problem. This, in effect, results in reducing the decoupling problem to one of solving a linear system of equations.

The Riccati equation plays an equally important role in scattering theory as in linear least-squares estimation theory. However, in the scattering literature, a somewhat different framework of treating the Riccati equation has been developed. We show that this framework is very appropriate also for estimation problems, and that it enables us to give simple derivatitions of known results as well as to obtain several new results. Examples include the derivation of backwards equations to solve forwards Riccati equations; an analysis of the asymptotic behavior of the Riccati equation; the derivation of backwards Markovian representations of stochastic processes; and new derivations and new insights into the Chandrasekhar and related Levinson and Cholesky equations.

A certain "star-product" formalism in scattering theory as developed by Redheffer is shown to also be naturally applicable to discrete-time linear least-squares estimation problems. The formalism seems to provide a nice way of handling some of the well-known algebraic complications of the discrete-time case, e.g., the distinctions between time and measurement updates, predicted and filtered estimates, etc. Several other applications of the scattering framework are presented, including doubling formulas for the error covariance, a change of initial conditions formula, equations for a backwards Markov state model, and a new derivation of the Chandrasekhar-type equations for the constant parameter case. The differences between the discrete-time and continuous-time are noted.

An examination is made of linear regulator problems with an additional cost for applying a nonzero control at each instant. The dual of this problem is the least-squares filtering problem with a cost for taking measurements. Because a solution to the general problem involves solving a two point boundary value problem in nonlinear matrix differential or defference equations, two easily-computed suboptimal control schemes and some useful bounds are proposed. A class of problems is also delineated for which the optimum solution has some special properties which enable it to be computed simply and directly.
