Medical procedures, in particular those invasive, generate significant ethical, legal, and social concerns, including the issues of humanity and person-hood, stigma, autonomy, privacy and security, research ethics, safety, moral and legal responsibility, fair access, and justice. It was pointed out that future research should focus on developing practical solutions to the ethical challenges of medical experimental procedures with human participants, facilitated by the collection of empirical data on the perspectives shared by the general public, researchers and of course study participants. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, a problem of autonomous ship utility model identification for control purposes is considered. In particular, the problem is formulated in terms of model parameter estimation (one-step-ahead prediction). This is a complex task due to lack of measurements of the parameter values, their time-variability and structural uncertainty introduced by the available models. In this work, authors consider and compare two utility models based on often utilised ship model structures with time-varying parameters identified recursively using the extended Kalman lter (EKF). The validation results have been obtained using simulation experiments in which the required information for the parameter estimation task had been generated using a cognitive model of B-481 ship. The results indicate the benefits and drawbacks, in terms of estimation accuracy and computational complexity, of using each of the investigated utility model structures. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

The multi-wavelength data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) is extensively used in studying the physics of the Sun and its atmosphere. In this study, we estimate the formation heights of low-corona and chromospheric channels of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) over the atmospheres of sunspot umbrae during the quiet condition period within 20 different active regions. The upward propagating slow magnetoacoustic waves (slow MAWs) of 3-min period, which are perpetually present in sunspots, are utilized for this purpose. Employing a cross-correlation technique, the most frequent time lag between different channel pairs is measured. By combining this information with the local sound speed obtained from the characteristic formation temperatures of individual channels, we estimate the respective formation heights. The median values of formation heights obtained across all active regions in our sample are 356, 368, 858, 1180, and 1470 km, respectively, for the AIA 1600 Å, 1700 Å, 304 Å, 131 Å, and 171 Å channels. The corresponding ranges in the formation heights are 247 − 453, 260 − 468, 575 − 1155, 709 − 1937, and 909 − 2585 km, respectively. These values are measured with respect to the HMI continuum. We find the formation height of UV channels is quite stable (between 250 − 500 km) and displays only a marginal difference between the AIA 1600 Å and 1700 Å during quiet conditions. The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions due to anthropogenic causes is one of the world's main challenges to face climate change. Wastewater treatment plants are necessary to improve the quality of wastewater before it is discharged into the receiving environment, but they have the disadvantage of generating nitrous oxide emissions during the biological treatment, which is a potent greenhouse gas. Avoiding partial nitrification by increasing dissolved oxygen is one of the ways to reduce these emissions. However, this article proposes to face a reduction of nitrous oxide emissions by reducing oxygen to minimum levels causing heterotrophic microorganisms to reduce nitrous oxide to dinitrogen. To achieve this objective, the present work proposes a regulation of the internal recirculation flow rate of the biological treatment by means of a fuzzy controller. This regulation is added to a usual control strategy in wastewater treatment plants, which achieves satisfactory results with respect to water quality and operational costs but that generates high nitrous oxide emissions. The Benchmark Simulation Model no. 2 Gas is used as working scenario, which includes the two main nitrous oxide emission pathways: heterotrophic denitrification and ammonia oxidizing bacteria denitrification. The proposed internal recirculation manipulation is shown to achieve nitrous oxide reductions of 26.70 and 30.83% in different time periods with a slight effluent quality improvement and an operational cost reduction. © 2022, The Authors. Machine learning (ML) sees an increasing prevalence of being used in the internet-of-things (IoT)-based smart grid. However, the trustworthiness of ML is a severe issue that must be addressed to accommodate the trend of ML-based smart grid applications (MLsgAPPs). The adversarial distortion injected into the power signal will greatly affect the system’s normal control and operation. Therefore, it is imperative to conduct vulnerability assessment for MLsgAPPs applied in the context of safety-critical power systems. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of the recent progress in designing attack and defense methods for MLsgAPPs. Unlike the traditional survey about ML security, this is the first review work about the security of MLsgAPPs that focuses on the characteristics of power systems. We first highlight the specifics for constructing the adversarial attacks on MLsgAPPs. Then, the vulnerability of MLsgAPP is analyzed from both the aspects of the power system and ML model. Afterward, a comprehensive survey is conducted to review and compare existing studies about the adversarial attacks on MLsgAPPs in scenarios of generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption, and the countermeasures are reviewed according to the attacks that they defend against. Finally, the future research directions are discussed on the attacker’s and defender’s side, respectively. We also analyze the potential vulnerability of large language model-based (e.g., ChatGPT) power system applications. Overall, we encourage more researchers to contribute to investigating the adversarial issues of MLsgAPPs. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper we consider convex optimization problems with stochastic composite objective function subject to (possibly) infinite intersection of constraints. The objective function is expressed in terms of expectation operator over a sum of two terms satisfying a stochastic bounded gradient condition, with or without strong convexity type properties. In contrast to the classical approach, where the constraints are usually represented as intersection of simple sets, in this paper we consider that each constraint set is given as the level set of a convex but not necessarily differentiable function. Based on the flexibility offered by our general optimization model we consider a stochastic subgradient method with random feasibility updates. At each iteration, our algorithm takes a stochastic proximal (sub)gradient step aimed at minimizing the objective function and then a subsequent subgradient step minimizing the feasibility violation of the observed random constraint. We analyze the convergence behavior of the proposed algorithm for diminishing stepsizes and for the case when the objective function is convex or strongly convex, unifying the nonsmooth and smooth cases. We prove sublinear convergence rates for this stochastic subgradient algorithm, which are known to be optimal for subgradient methods on this class of problems. When the objective function has a linear least-square form and the constraints are polyhedral, it is shown that the algorithm converges linearly. Numerical evidence supports the effectiveness of our method in real problems. © 2022, CC BY.

The micro RNA-messenger RNA dynamics is a topic of constant interest. In this paper we analyze the stability of equilibria of a mathematical model associated to this interaction. After proving the existence and uniqueness of an equilibrium point in the positive ortant, we provide numerically tractable conditions (by using Linear Matrix Inequalities techniques) to check the asymptotic stability of the equilibrium point. The article analyzes the functioning of monitoring and positioning systems at complex technical objects. it is shown that when objects are located in remote areas, the absence of cellular communication is possible. To solve the problems of monitoring such territories, the complex application of such communication technologies as LoRa, Wi-Fi is considered. Based on the requirements for the monitoring system, a multilevel integrated model is proposed that allows using a unified approach to both hardware and software components of the system. Based on the proposed model, an experimental study of the positioning and monitoring system was carried out. The properties of the system operability have been confirmed under conditions of limited functioning of individual elements. © 2021 iEEE.

The normalized wavelet scalogram is introduced to detect singularities including jumps, cusps and other sharply changing points.
