Studies have shown the possibility of using brain signals that are automatically generated while observing a navigation task as feedback for semi-autonomous control of a robot. This allows the robot to learn quasi-optimal routes to intended targets. We have combined the subclassification of two different types of navigational errors, with the subclassification of two different types of correct navigational actions, to create a 4-way classification strategy, providing detailed information about the type of action the robot performed. We used a 2-stage stepwise linear discriminant analysis approach, and tested this using brain signals from 8 and 14 participants observing two robot navigation tasks. Classification results were significantly above the chance level, with mean overall accuracy of 44.3% and 36.0% for the two datasets. As a proof of concept, we have shown that it is possible to perform fine-grained, 4-way classification of robot navigational actions, based on the electroencephalogram responses of participants who only had to observe the task. This study provides the next step towards comprehensive implicit brain-machine communication, and towards an efficient semi-autonomous brain-computer interface.

Spatial distributions in current, temperature, state-of-charge and degradation across the plane of large format lithium-ion battery pouch cells can significantly impact their performance, especially at high C-rates. In this paper, a method to smooth out these spatial distributions by grading the electrode microstructure in-the-plane is proposed. A mathematical model of a large format pouch cell is developed and validated against both temperature and voltage experimental data. An analytic solution for the optimal graded electrode that achieves a uniform current distribution across the pouch cell is then derived. The model predicts that the graded electrodes could significantly reduce the likelihood of lithium plating in large format pouch cells, with grading increasing the C-rate at which plating occurs from 2.75C to 5.5C. These results indicate the potential of designing spatially varying electrode architectures to homogenise the response of large format pouch cells and improve their high rate performance. © 2024, CC BY.

In this paper, a complementary approach to implementing high performance real time adaptive robust multi model control systems is presented which leverages the power of graphics processing units to implement a cache of previously discovered models and controllers, which will improve the efficiency of the control loop if the system has a repeated behavior, or the process encounters several similar types of perturbances.

The optimality and sensitivity of the empirical risk minimization problem with relative entropy regularization (ERM-RER) are investigated for the case in which the reference is a σ-finite measure instead of a probability measure. This generalization allows for a larger degree of flexibility in the incorporation of prior knowledge over the set of models. In this setting, the interplay of the regularization parameter, the reference measure, the risk function, and the empirical risk induced by the solution of the ERM-RER problem is characterized. This characterization yields necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of regularization parameters that achieve arbitrarily small empirical risk with arbitrarily high probability. Additionally, the sensitivity of the expected empirical risk to deviations from the solution of the ERM-RER problem is studied. Dataset-dependent and dataset-independent upper bounds on the absolute value of the sensitivity are presented. In a special case, it is shown that the expectation (with respect to the datasets) of the absolute value of the sensitivity is upper bounded, up to a constant factor, by the square root of the lautum information between the models and the datasets.

Simulation of manufacturing processes is a key step in achieving the digitalisation of manufacturing systems. This work presents the design, development and experimental evaluation of a discrete event simulation (DES) model of a production system (Festo Cyber-physical System). This model was used for the virtual analyses and optimisation of the production process and formed the basic framework for further virtual development of a digital twin of the physical asset. The factorial experimental technique was used to investigate the impact of identified factors of the physical system and their interactions on the system performance. Expert knowledge, generated data from the physical system and predefined objectives, were used to verify the virtual model. © 2019 The authors and IOS Press. All rights reserved.

This paper studies data-driven control of unknown sampled-data systems with communication delays under an event-triggering transmission mechanism. Data-based representations for stochastic linear systems with a known or an unknown system input matrix are first developed, along with a novel class of dynamic triggering schemes for sampled-data systems with time delays. A model-based stability condition for the resulting event-triggered time-delay system is established using a looped-functional approach. Combining this model-based condition with the data-driven representations, data-based stability conditions are derived. Building on the data-based conditions, methods for co-designing the controller gain and the event-triggering matrix are subsequently provided for both cases with or without using the input matrix. Finally, a numerical example is presented to corroborate the role of additional prior knowledge of the input matrix in reducing the conservatism of stability conditions, as well as the merits of our approaches relative to existing results. © 2021, CC BY.

Taking into account the modern realities of industrial production, today the task of improving the quality of welding wire in the drawing process using the electroplastic effect is relevant. The advantage of direct electric contact heating is substantiated by the possibility of obtaining the implementation and construction of a controlled process for the formation of the heating temperature during drawing. The control system is based on a proportional-integral-differential controller (PID controller), a power controller, a current source and an Apir-S measuring pyrometric complex, consisting of a primary pyrometric and secondary converter. By setting the appropriate coefficients of the PID controller, it is possible to form a stable operation mode with the formation of a controlled temperature regime during electric contact heating of the wire. It was experimentally established that, using the formation of a controlled temperature regime of annealing, due to the control of the heating temperature by a pyrometer, the control error did not exceed 1.3%. Compliance with the temperature of the annealing mode in the specified range provides the mechanical parameters of the products, namely wire, specified by the technological process. The methods adopted by the formation of a controlled temperature regime and the system of elements during its implementation are characterized by ease of use, reliability and ensuring the quality indicators of the technological process being performed. A further line of research is to substantiate the need to use the controlled cooling process to obtain the specified physical and mechanical parameters of the annealed wire.

In this paper, we analyse the behaviour of a buck converter network that contains arbitrary, up to mild regularity assumptions, loads. Our analysis of the network begins with the study of the current dynamics;we propose a novel Lyapunov function for the current in closed-loop with a bounded integrator. We leverage on these results to analyse the interaction properties between voltages and bounded currents as well as between node voltages and to propose a two-layer optimal controller that keeps network voltages within a compact neighbourhood of the nominal operational voltage. We analyse the stability of the closed loop system in two ways: one considering the interconnection properties which yields a weaker ISS type property and a second that contemplates the network in closed loop with a distributed optimal controller. For the latter, we propose a novel distributed way of controlling a Laplacian network using neighbouring information which results in asymptotic stability. We demonstrate our results in a meshed topology network containing 6 power converters, each converter feeding an individual constant power load with values chaning arbitrarily within a pre-specified range. © 2021, CC BY-SA.

Additive manufacturing (AM) is emerging within many industrial applications due to inherent advantages such as rapid prototyping and produc- tion. However, the correlation of process parameters across modules and their impacts on product quality are not yet fully understood. This article presents a system built out of Internet of Things (IoT) and edge computing technologies to collect and analyze AM process in-situ. An IoT thermal camera platform was developed, and integrated within an Laser Based Additive Manufacturing (LBAM) system to collect information that could be used to characterize the thermal distribution surrounding the melt pool. Machine learning techniques were utilised to identify the occurrence of defects using the collected low-resolution thermal images.

The article presents the issue of scale deposits in sanitary installations. Scale contributes to improper operation of sanitary devices and leads to their degradation. Scale build-up in pipes and measuring elements results in higher water consumption due to inaccurate estimation of this resource consumption. The consequence is that devices based on process automation do not work properly due to disturbances in the actual water flow. The formation of deposits also leads to economic and ecological losses, as sanitary installations elements have to be replaced, which affects the increased use of raw materials and the generation of waste. This is not in line with current trends and global objectives related to circular economy. Scale also results in increased energy consumption and reduced energy efficiency. This is due to the resistance of the flows and the increased work of the pumps. Scale has insulating properties, which results in less efficient heat transfer. In this stady, a mathematical model was developed to detect the formation of scale deposits in sanitary installations. On this basis, it is possible to control the quality status of sanitary installation components. In this way, by taking appropriate action at an early stage of the formation of deposits, it can extend the life of the installation. Having information on scale deposits, it will help avoid wasting water and lead to more accurate measurement of water flows. This is important for the proper operation of devices such as heat pumps, where their operation is automated and requires precise measurements of the energy processes taking place. Scale is a significant problem for households, and also for factories or public institutions that are exposed to hard water environments. © 2021 International Multidisciplinary Scientific Geoconference.
