Managing anesthesia and hemodynamic regulation during surgical procedures poses significant challenges due to patient-specific variability and the complex interactions of administered drugs. While advanced monitoring systems and Target-controlled Infusion (TCI) devices enhance precision in drug delivery, their reliance on manual adjustments limits real-time adaptability. This study investigates two advanced control strategies–centralized Model Predictive control (MPC) and decentralized fractional-order control–within a multivariable framework designed to regulate hypnosis, analgesia, and hemodynamic stabilization. Virtual patient simulations were used to evaluate these approaches under diverse anesthetic and, notably, hemodynamic conditions. The findings reveal that MPC delivers superior precision in maintaining the Bispectral Index (BIS) but tends to apply more aggressive adjustments to hemodynamic variables. In contrast, fractional-order control ensures smoother responses, though its ability to handle disturbances is less robust in certain scenarios. This study highlights the trade-offs between these strategies and advocates for further exploration of hybrid solutions to enhance patient safety and surgical outcomes.

Introducing interactivity in the education process makes the learning more successful and enjoyable. MATLAB provides an effective environment for learning and applying different disciplines. control101 is a new MATLAB toolbox under development which provides tools for interactive learning of control disciplines. This paper presents the framework for teaching discrete control algorithms applied for processes containing large dead times.

This paper explores the applicability of generative AI (genAI), specifically Large Language Models (LLMs), for the automatic generation and configuration of metaheuristic algorithms to address a real-world engineering problem: the optimal parameter estimation of time-delay systems in interconnected heating-cooling loops. The study introduces a pioneering workflow and iterative architecture with feedback within the emerging field of genAI-driven optimization for real optimization problems, eliminating the need for manually crafted or modified algorithms. This automated system empowers domain experts in engineering to solve complex optimization problems with minimal knowledge of optimization algorithms, lowering the barrier to entry for sophisticated algorithm use. We demonstrate how LLMs can generate effective optimizers under conditions like connstrained optimization problems where the solution lies near the boundaries of the search space. Four state-of-the-art LLMs (closed and open-sourced) have been selected for experiments. These are GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, Claude Sonnet 3.5 and Llama 3.1. All studied LLMs generated metaheuristics that outperformed the initialization baseline optimization method (Random Search and CMA-ES). Notably, the Claude Sonnet 3.5 model generated a metaheuristic with the best mean results, almost matching the performance of the tuned state-of-the-art DISH algorithm, as an example of adaptive Differential Evolution. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Induction heating is widely used in industrial furnaces because of its rapid response time and high energy efficiency. To design and optimize these furnaces, computer-aided simulations are essential. This study aims to develop an accurate temperature field model for a square cross-section steel billet in an induction furnace by leveraging various parameters in COMSOL Multiphysics software. The simulation analysis incorporated temperature dynamics, considering skin depth, temperaturedependent, and constant parameters of the steel billet. The datadriven model was converted into a state-space representation utilizing MATLAB's System Identification Toolbox. This conversion facilitated the design of a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) with integral gain and pole placement. Further, these controllers' performance was analyzed, and controllers were successfully implemented to regulate the temperature field of the billet from initial temperature to reference temperature, utilizing the distributed parameter system control circuit.

Time-optimal motion planning is one of the most essential problems in robotic theories. The presented direct transcription approach uses convex optimisation method to obtain a minimum-time control for robot manipulators. One subset of motion planning is the waiter motion problem that consists of moving a tablet from one place to another as fast as possible, avoiding the slip of the object that is placed upon it. In this paper the direct transcription method is presented in order to solve the waiter problem. This path tracking problem is also approximated by sequential two dimensional second-order cone programs (SOCP) using nonlinear change of variables. The computational benefit of the sequential method compared to the direct transcription approach is presented. The waiter motion problem is validated by real-life experimental results with a 6-DoF robotic arm. © 2017

This paper explains in detail the development, validation and simulation of a standard PI controller that can boost the WECS (Wind energy conversion system) power through two strategies. In the first strategy, the power is boosted by increasing the generator angular velocity through the direct increase of the angular velocity of the wind turbine rotor by slightly pitching the blades. In the second strategy, the power is boosted by increasing the load torque of the generator, through the direct increase of the load torque of the wind turbine rotor. For achieving this goal, the following tasks have been accomplished: a wind energy conversion system nonlinear mathematical model has been developed, a gain scheduled proportional-integral (PI) controller as the baseline controller, and two gain scheduled proportional-integral (PI) power-boosting controllers for the two power-boosting strategies. For the power-boosting controllers, it is also presented a logic that switches between baseline and power booster controllers when certain wind speeds conditions are met. The response, stability, performance and the increase in the shaft torsion, tower and blades bending moments of the gain scheduled PI power-boosting controllers have been compared with the baseline controller. By comparing the output power response of the controllers, it can be seen that the power booster controllers boost the power when the defined conditions are met. Finally, for boosting the power of a WECS in certain conditions the most efficient way is by increasing the generator load torque, because this strategy increases the least the loading of the main components of a WECS. This power boosting strategy implementation it might require the change (or reinforcement) of the drive train shaft, if it cannot take the extra loading created by power boosting controller. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper is focused on reference tracking and disturbance rejection for linear time-invariant time delay systems. The contribution is motivated by the fact that the task of reference tracking and disturbance rejection for non-stepwise those external inputs in the feedback loop is often ignored in the literature. The presented approach is based on algebraic operations in a special ring RMS and on the divisibility condition in the ring. The general idea for a feedback loop with two controllers is introduced. The methodology is clarified and verified by a simulation example in the Matlab/Simulink environment. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper introduces a novel distributed optimization framework for large-scale AC Optimal Power Flow (OPF) problems, offering both theoretical convergence guarantees and rapid convergence in practice. By integrating smoothing techniques and the Schur complement, the proposed approach addresses the scalability challenges and reduces communication overhead in distributed AC OPF. Additionally, optimal network decomposition enables efficient parallel processing under the single program multiple data (SPMD) paradigm. Extensive simulations on large-scale benchmarks across various operating scenarios indicate that the proposed framework is 2 to 5 times faster than the state-of-the-art centralized solver IPOPT on modest hardware. This paves the way for more scalable and efficient distributed optimization in future power system applications. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Data augmentation methods for neural machine translation are particularly useful when limited amount of training data is available, which is often the case when dealing with low-resource languages. We introduce a novel augmentation method, which generates new sentences by swapping objects and subjects across bisentences. This is performed simultaneously based on the dependency parse trees of the source and target sentences. We name this method TreeSwap. Our results show that TreeSwap achieves consistent improvements over baseline models in 4 language pairs in both directions on resource-constrained datasets. We also explore domain-specific corpora, but find that our method does not make significant improvements on law, medical and IT data. We report the scores of similar augmentation methods and find that TreeSwap performs comparably. We also analyze the generated sentences qualitatively and find that the augmentation produces a correct translation in most cases. Our code is available on Github1. © 2023 Incoma Ltd. The main idea of this project is to simulate the thermal construction responses in dependence on changing boundary conditions. In order to predict environmental temperature precisely a model of one room has been developed and implemented in COMSOL Multiphysics. A finite element model was developed in 3D coordinates in order to achieve illustration of an air and an energy movement and to simulate the transient process in the walls in [7]. Notwithstanding, this model was not accurate enough for application in building conditions. Main goal of this paper is in updating current model to get results with sufficient accuracy. Temperature course of the model is analyzed and compared to the experimentally measured temperature data. © 2011 IEEE.
