This paper presents an experimental study that compares the performance of four selected metaheuristic algorithms for optimizing a time delay system model. Time delay system models are complex and challenging to optimize due to their inherent characteristics, such as non-linearity, multi-modality, and constraints. The study includes an explanation of the choice and core functionality of the selected algorithms, which are both baseline and state-of-the-art variants of self-organizing migrating algorithm (SOMA), state-of-the-art variant from the Success-History-based Adaptive Differential Evolution family of algorithms, with emphasis on diverse search (DISH algorithm), and Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES) algorithm. The hyperparameters of the metaheuristic algorithms were set using the iRace automatic algorithm configuration framework. The paper emphasizes the importance of metaheuristic algorithms in control engineering for time-delay systems to develop more effective and efficient control strategies and precise model identifications. The experimental results highlight the effectiveness of the state-of-the-art algorithms with specific adaptive mechanisms like population organization process, diverse search and adaptation mechanisms ensuring a gradual transition from exploration to exploitation. Overall, this study contributes to understanding the challenges and advantages of using metaheuristic algorithms in control engineering for time delay systems. The results provide valuable insights into the performance of modern metaheuristic algorithms and can help guide the selection of appropriate adaptive mechanisms of metaheuristics.

Clustering vehicles in a platoon by exchanging information through communication networks leads to an improvement in their performance with a moderate cooperation effort. In particular, in this paper, a bio-inspired methodology for overlapping coalitions of vehicles is proposed, which optimizes communication and control performance. The results obtained using the proposed adaptive clusters method are compared with the ones obtained by a conventional coalitional control strategy, and the comparison illustrates the improved efficiency of the proposed method.

The successful verification of the authenticity of banknotes, or the detection of counterfeits, is based on the combination of an effective measuring system and computer technology. In this paper, a modern diagnostic method Raman microscopy together with an exploratory tool for processing and interpreting multi-dimensional datasets, and cluster analysis, are used to study structural differences between paper and orange ink used on genuine banknotes. Six currencies of European countries were selected for this study: Croatian kuna, Czech crown, euro, Great British Pound, Polish zloty, and Swiss franc. Raman microscopy offers non-destructive, rapid analysis without any sample preparation and pre-processing, with the potential to recognize structural modification of substances, together with the advantages of optical microscopy. Cotton fibres, $\text{TiO}_{2}$ in two different modifications, and other additives are successfully identified within the spectra. The patterns found in mathematically processed Raman data, especially between the paper, indicate both, the similarities and differences across the various banknotes, even of the same currency. The results serve as a base of the spectral database for authenticity control of banknotes and classification of the materials used.

This paper explores the impact of the burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) presence on distribution grid operations, highlighting the challenges they present to conventional pricing strategies due to their dual role as power consumers and suppliers, coupled with their energy storage capabilities. We propose an advanced real-time pricing model for the electricity market, employing a novel distributed bilevel optimization framework. This framework distinguishes between the distribution system operator (DSO) at the upper level and the EVs at the lower level, each aiming to optimize profit margins. The optimization includes power flow constraints at the upper level to ensure efficient operation within safe system limits, while model predictive control (MPC) is used to optimize lower-level EV responses. Additionally, we provide a rigorous convergence analysis of the proposed bilevel optimization method. Detailed convergence studies and simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm.

Induction heating is widely used in industrial furnaces because of its rapid response time and high energy efficiency. To design and optimize these furnaces, computer-aided simulations are essential. This study aims to develop an accurate temperature field model for a square cross-section steel billet in an induction furnace by leveraging various parameters in COMSOL Multiphysics software. The simulation analysis incorporated temperature dynamics, considering skin depth, temperaturedependent, and constant parameters of the steel billet. The datadriven model was converted into a state-space representation utilizing MATLAB's System Identification Toolbox. This conversion facilitated the design of a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) with integral gain and pole placement. Further, these controllers' performance was analyzed, and controllers were successfully implemented to regulate the temperature field of the billet from initial temperature to reference temperature, utilizing the distributed parameter system control circuit.
