The instantaneous shaft speed estimation method of wind turbine gearbox based on time-frequency ridge estimation is the most widely used method, but it requires parameter adjustment and expert knowledge to ensure the accuracy of ridge estimation, which significantly reduces the effectiveness of such methods in practice. In this paper, an end-to-end automated ridge estimating (ARE) method is proposed. ARE uses the inherent harmonic relationship in the vibration signal of wind turbine (WT) gearbox to construct a selection index for automatically selecting the target ridge with clear physical meaning. Then, a sub-region division strategy is proposed to avoid the interference of other components and improve computational efficiency. Finally, a parameter-free objective function considering both the amplitude and smoothness of the ridge is proposed to achieve target ridge estimation. The vibration signals of different WT gearboxes collected on-site were applied to verify the performance of ARE. The result shows that ARE realizes the automatic estimation of a ridge. It outperforms other methods in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy sources, including wind and solar power, is a validated approach for mitigating carbon emissions. To maximize renewable energy potential and account for costs and impacts of low carbon energy transitions, research models or modelling tools must provide an accurate representation of the technological and economic capabilities of renewable energy technologies. Hence, this study assesses the electricity generation potential, and costs associated with onshore and offshore wind power, and solar photovoltaic (PV) system, in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region based on wind and solar atlas datasets. Unlike existing works in literature, the assessment of offshore wind energy potential and the calculation of the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) in this study incorporates factors like water depth, distance from shore, and wind speed. Also, the potential of onshore wind energy and solar photovoltaic systems is evaluated by considering variables such as population density, availability of suitable land area, and geographical location, for every grid cell in the MENA region. We found that the average LCOE can be as low as US$40/MWh for solar PV and US$45/MWh for wind power, achieved in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait respectively. This work contributes to existing literature by providing reliable LCOE, capacity factor, and productivity data for solar and wind energy potential estimation in the MENA region. © 2025 The Authors

Surface defect detection is a fundamental step of quality management. Nowadays, surface defect detection system based on machine vision technology has made great progress which can gradually replace the human inspector. With the help of convolutional neural networks, the accuracy and stability of the surface defect detection algorithm are improving rapidly. However, it is difficult to process the images which have small defect areas and complex backgrounds. Furthermore, lacking defective samples and limited computation resources are also tough problems. To deal with these problems, a two-stage algorithm combined with object detection and classification networks is proposed. Transform learning and data augmentation are used to deal with the problem of lacking defect samples. Besides, a detection system based on collaborative cloud-edge computation is designed to improve the performance of the algorithm. The result shows that the proposed method has high performance and low requirements of computation resources. © 2021 IEEE.

Under conditions of priori parametric and structural uncertainties and influence of external noise, the synthesis of combined control law for class of non-affine single-channel plants with scalar output in the presence of control delay is considered. To compensate the negative effect of known delay in control the predictor-compensator is connected in parallel with the plant in the system. The synthesis of structure of the combined regulator is based on use of the hyperstability criterion. Estimates of unmeasured state variables are obtained with the help of filter corrector;therefore, the synthesized system is L-dissipative. To confirm the operability of the obtained system and ensure the required quality of its transient processes, it is performed simulation modeling of the synthesized system. The results of simulation showed that the developed system satisfies the required properties and provides the desired quality of the non-affine plant functioning in the presence of control delay and uncontrolled external disturbances. © 2020 IEEE.

This paper investigates the performance of the dual mode, namely flipper mode and central pattern generator(CPG) mode, for controlling the depth of a gliding robotic dolphin. Subsequent to considering the errors in dynamic models, we propose a depth control system that combines the line-of-sight(LOS)method with an adaptive control approach(ACA) to deal with uncertainties in the model parameters. First,we establish a full-state dynamic model to conduct simulations and optimize the parameters used in later aquatic experiments. Then, we use the LOS method to transform the control target from the depth to the pitch angle and employ the ACA to calculate the control signal. In particular, we optimize the ACA’s control parameters using simulations based on our dynamic model. Finally, our simulated and experimental results demonstrate not only that we can successfully control the robotic dolphin’s depth, but also that its performance was better than that of the CPG-based control, thus indicating that we can achieve three-dimensional motion by combining flipper-based and CPG-based control. The results of this study suggest valuable ideas for practical applications of gliding robotic dolphins.

Disturbance observers have been attracting continuing research efforts and are widely used in many applications. Among them, the Kalman filter-based disturbance observer is an attractive one since it estimates both the state and the disturbance simultaneously, and is optimal for a linear system with Gaussian noises. Unfortunately, The noise in the disturbance channel typically exhibits a heavy-tailed distribution because the nominal disturbance dynamics usually do not align with the practical ones. To handle this issue, we propose a generalized multi-kernel maximum correntropy Kalman filter for disturbance estimation, which is less conservative by adopting different kernel bandwidths for different channels and exhibits excellent performance both with and without external disturbance. The convergence of the fixed point iteration and the complexity of the proposed algorithm are given. Simulations on a robotic manipulator reveal that the proposed algorithm is very efficient in disturbance estimation with moderate algorithm complexity. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. This paper considers the problem of monitoring and adaptively estimating an environmental field, such as temperature or salinity, using an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). The AUV moves in the field and persistently measures environmental scalars and its position in its local coordinate frame. The environmental scalars are approximately linearly distributed over the region of interest, and an adaptive estimator is designed to estimate the gradient. By orthogonal decomposition of the velocity of the AUV, a linear time-varying system is equivalently constructed, and the sufficient conditions on the motion of the AUV are established, under which the global exponential stability of the estimation error system is rigorously proved. Furthermore, an estimate of the exponential convergence rate is given, and a reference trajectory that maximizes the estimate of the convergence rate is obtained for the AUV to track. Numerical examples verify the stability and efficiency of the system.

Local to Global: A Distributed Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm for Pseudo-Boolean Optimization Problems

With the rapid advancement of quantum computing, Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA) is considered as a promising candidate to demonstrate quantum supremacy, which exponentially solves a class of Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) problems. However, limited qubit availability and restricted coherence time challenge QAOA to solve large-scale pseudo-Boolean problems on currently available Near-term Intermediate Scale Quantum (NISQ) devices. In this paper, we propose a distributed QAOA which can solve a general pseudo-Boolean problem by converting it to a simplified Ising model. Different from existing distributed QAOAs’ assuming that local solutions are part of a global one, which is not often the case, we introduce community detection using Louvian algorithm to partition the graph where subgraphs are further compressed by community representation and merged into a higher level subgraph. Recursively and backwards, local solutions of lower level subgraphs are updated by heuristics from solutions of higher level subgraphs. Compared with existing methods, our algorithm incorporates global heuristics into local solutions such that our algorithm is proven to achieve a higher approximation ratio and outperforms across different graph configurations. Modularization facilitates the adaptability of cyber-physical production systems (CPPSs) with a variety of collaborative tasks. Various production rules can be captured by signal temporal logic (STL) specifications imposed on interconnected multi-agent systems (MASs). In this paper, we focus on the controller synthesis of STL tasks for interconnected MASs to accomplish collaborative tasks in modular CPPSs. Firstly, a class of STL specifications characterizing tasks by the combination of fixed-time reachability and finite-time persistence tasks is proposed, which encompasses a large class of production specifications for the MAS. Secondly, the acyclic decomposition of the global STL formula is constructed to enable conflict-free collaborative tasks and unidirectional couplings between subsystems. By establishing the equivalence between the proposition and the state set of the MAS, necessary and sufficient conditions are respectively proposed for the satisfaction of reachability and persistence tasks. In addition, an algorithm is presented to synthesize controllers for the MAS with the global STL specification based on local controllers of subsystems. An illustrative example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This article proposes a variable frequency phase-shift modulation technique for single stage dual-active-bridge (DAB) AC-DC converter. This isolated single-stage single-phase converter consists of a DAB and a full bridge (FB) inverter. The proposed strategy applies a composite control strategy combining frequency modulation and extended phase shift (EPS) method to overcome the drawback of the non-linear power control of traditional phase-shift control scheme, which significantly reduces the complexity of the controller algorithm. Moreover, the synchronous inverter control applied to the back-end FB inverter is designed, which can realize the energy conversions in a single-stage, and a high frequency (HF) filter capacitor can replace the electrolytic capacitor at the output side DC-link. Thus, the safety of system operation improves and the power density of the system increases. Finally, simulation results confirm the validity and practical feasibility of the proposed control strategy.
