As vehicle emission standards become more stringent, there is an increasing need for continual monitoring of benzene content in gasoline. Since the on-line analyzers are often unavailable, and laboratory analyses are infrequently obtained, soft sensors for the estimation of benzene content of light reformate are developed. Soft sensors are developed using system identification methods. Experimental data is acquired from the refinery distributed control system (DCS) and include continuously measured variables and analyzer assays available on-line. In the present work, the development of a Finite Impulse Response (FIR) model, an Output Error (OE) model and an Auto-Regressive Model with Exogenous Inputs (ARX) model are presented. To overcome the problem of selecting the best model parameters by trial and error, genetic algorithm was used. Based on developed soft sensors, it is possible to entirely replace on-line analyzers with soft sensors by embedding the model in a DCS on-site.

The problem of reachable set estimation for linear systems subject to both time delay and polytopic uncertainties is considered in this paper. Our aim is to find a set as small as possible to bound the states starting from the origin by inputs with peak values. The Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional together with free-weighting matrix technique are proposed to derive some sufficient conditions for the existence of an ellipsoidal bound to estimate the states. This method eliminates the conservatism generated by Jensen's inequality and obtains a much tighter reachable set bound. In addition, the number of variables to be determined is smaller than the previous result based on the maximal Lyapunov functional. Finally, an example illustrates the merits of our proposed results.

Abstract The activated sludge process is the main process in most urban wastewater treatment systems. It is considered complex in nature, and building its mathematical model in practice becomes difficult. A simple and easy way to build the simulation models for the system is needed. In this paper, a LabVIEW based simulator for the system is presented. LabVIEW offers a highly efficient, simple and flexible platform for simulation and control. Building applications in LabVIEW require less coding, and debugging is easy and fast. The proposed simulator utilizes the Benchmark Simulation Model no.1 (BSM 1) for the biochemical reactor and clarification processes. The operation of the simulator is via a graphical user interface (GUI) built in the LabVIEW environment. The simulation results can be displayed in digital and graphical forms. Simulation results obtained were compared with the results from other software simulation packages in which the COST/IWA Simulation Benchmark has been implemented. The developed simulator is very useful due to its efficiency and accuracy in simulating the wastewater process model. The simulator can serve as a training tool for plant operators/students to provide them with better knowledge and understanding of the process.

The problem of reachable set bounding for a class of linear systems subject to both discrete and distributed delays is addressed in this paper. First, a new criterion is derived to give an ellipsoid which bounds all the states starting from the origin by inputs with peak-values. The constraint with a special structure that appeared in our previous result is removed by combining the Jensen integral inequality and the reciprocally convex approach. In addition, the obtained condition brings a tighter reachable set estimation with lower computational complexity. We also extend the above result to systems with polytopic uncertainties. Finally, an example is presented to illustrate the merit of our proposed method.

The increasing demands on quality of power, emissions and overall performance of combustion engines lay new goals for the hardware and the software development of control systems. High-performance embedded controllers open the possibilities for application of numerical methods to solve the problems of modeling and control of combustion engines. Algorithms for estimation of state and parameters are essential components of many advanced control, monitoring and signal processing engine applications. A widely applicable estimator is given by the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) which defines a finite memory recursive algorithm suited for real-time implementation, where only the last measurement is used to update the state estimate, based on the past history being approximately summarized by the a priori estimate of the state and the error covariance matrix estimate. The proposed EKF uses an augmented air-path state-space model to estimate unmeasurable mass flow quantities. The EKF algorithm based on the augmented state-space model considerably reduces the modeling errors compared to the open loop estimator simulation and compared to the EKF without the augmentation which is demonstrated on a standard production Diesel engine data. The experimental validation of the observed state quantities is performed against the measured pressures and turbocharger speed data. The estimated mass flow quantities are indirectly validated through the air compressor flow that is directly validated against air mass flow sensor data. Two two-sensor setups are considered in this study. In the first experiment the intake manifold pressure and the turbocharger speed is used. The second experiment uses the intake manifold pressure and the exhaust manifold pressure as the measurement information for the EKF. The second experiment gives more precise mass flow estimate in term of less bias on the estimates, but more variance due to the high frequency exhaust manifold pressure variations caused by the

Over the past 10 years there have been rapid advances in wireless technologies and an importance of a radio frequency (RF) communication system is expanding day by day due to its advantages. In the meantime, a huge number of researchers are investigating from the various aspects of a such field. Electromagnetic wave propagation in an indoor environment and penetration trough environment medium is still under consideration. In this paper, we reveal a measured result from the different indoor environments for different transmitted power levels and frequencies. Based on the analysis of the feature of cognitive radio (CR) networks, we build a relevant interference model. Cognitive users should particularly consider the problem of interference with licensed users and satisfy the signal-to-interferenceplus-noise ratio (SINR) requirement at the same time. We propose a new iterative algorithm using the game theory in this paper. We consider not only the SINR requirement as other game algorithms but also the influence of power threshold. The variable power limit is the characteristic of CR. We prove the convergence of the algorithm and the existence of Nash equilibrium. According to different power thresholds, we give an approach for solving the problem of coexistence between licensed user and cognitive user in a cognitive system. The algorithm has the advantage that it can be distributively implemented, and the method converges relatively fast. Numerical results are presented to show that the proposed approach has better antinoise effect and capacity. © 2011 IEEE.

In order to obtain a forecast model for product design time from a small data set, Gaussian Margin Regression (GMR) is presented on the basis of combining Gaussian Margin Machines and kernel based regression. Gaussian Margin Regression maintains a Gaussian distribution over weight vectors for kernel based regression. The algorithm is applied to seeking the least information distribution that will make actual value be included in the confidential interval with high probability, and embedded genetic algorithm is presented for choosing its relevant parameters. The results of application in injection mold designs reveal that the time forecast model based on GMR is of feasibility and validity. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper is concerned with the stability analysis and controller design for a class of discrete-time Markovian jump systems subject to incomplete knowledge of transition probabilities. Different from the previous results, some free-weighting matrices are introduced to obtain some new criteria with less conservatism. It is theoretically shown that the previous results are special cases if the free-weighting matrices are chosen to be some special forms. This brings much less conservatism compared with the previous ones. A numerical example is provided to show the effectiveness the proposed method. © 2011 Chinese Assoc of Automati.

Highly accurate geometric correction for seriously oblique aero remote sensing image based on the piecewise polynomial model

Most widely used geometric correction methods rely on ground control points to empirically determine a mathematical coordinate transformation to project the distorted image into the reference image. However, conventional methods usually employed the same correction formula in the whole image which few considered the seriously geometric distortion problem causing by imaging with a large view angle. This paper introduces a new piecewise polynomial correction method that addresses this problem based on the nonlinear variability of geometric distortions in different imaging angles. In the new method, piecewise strategy and the selection of control points are two key techniques. The seriously oblique image is partitioned into several subspaces which separately use the different correction factors in order to correct the local distortions better. And in the correction, a uniform distribution strategy is proposed for selecting the representative control points to evaluate the correction polynomial coefficients of each subspace. The experimental results show that the proposed correction method is significantly outperforming conventional approaches. For an image acquired in 60 degrees, the proposed method results in correction root mean square errors having around 30% improvement comparing to the traditional method.
