Occupant's identity and location are important information for lighting control in order to reduce the energy consumption while increasing livelihood. While active RFID system provides occupant's identity, it is nontrivial to localize the occupant's location in an indoor environment due to the multipath effect, the changing environment, and the unreliable communication link. In this paper, we implement a system with multiple active RFID readers, and develop a localization algorithm based on support vector machine (SVM). The algorithm uses round-robin comparison to localize the occupant to one of the multiple regions in a floor. The geometric relationship among the rooms and the historical localization data are used to further improve the localization accuracy. Numerical results demonstrate a high localization accuracy of this algorithm. We hope this work sheds insight on lighting control for energy saving and an increased livelihood.

In this paper, a new desktop NC machine tool with compliance controllability is presented for finishing metallic molds with small curved surface. The NC machine tool consists of three single-axis robots with high position resolution. A tool attached to the tip of the z-axis has a small ball-end shape. Also, the control system of the NC machine tool is composed of a force feedback loop, position feedback loop and position feedforward loop. The force feedback loop controls the polishing force consisting of tool contact force and kinetic friction force. The position feedback loop controls the position in pick feed direction. Further, the position feedforward loop leads the tool tip along cutter location data. It is expected that the NC machine tool delicately removes surface cusps with under about 0.3 mm height on a mold, and finishes the surface with high quality. In order to first confirm the application limit of a conventional industrial robot to a finishing task, we evaluate the backlash that causes the position inaccuracy at the tip of the abrasive tool, through a simple position/force measurement. Through a similar position/force measurement and a surface following control experiment along a lens mold, the basic position/force controllability of the proposed NC machine tool is demonstrated.

In this paper, we focus on the structural decomposition of linear time-invariant descriptor systems. It has been extensively demonstrated and proven by Chen et al. [1] that its counterpart for proper systems has played an important role in solving many control problems such as H2 and H∞ control problems. We develop the structural decomposition technique of SISO system when the distributional equivalence is considered. We give a step-by-step constructive proof for the structural decomposition of SISO linear time-invariant descriptor systems. © 2007 IEEE.

We report radio frequency responses of an in-plane-gate field effect transistor (IPGFET) using an electrical pulse and probe technique. A series of high frequency pulses with the frequency up to 3 GHz were superimposed on the DC gate bias, and the time-averaged drain current was measured. The frequency and amplitude dependence of the time-averaged current depended on both the intrinsic gate response time of the IPGFET and the charging/discharging time of the traps at the etched surface. © 2008 IOP Publishing Ltd.

This paper presents an approach towards learning enhanced motion control of DC motor, suitable for applications involving repeated iterations of motion trajectories. The overall structure of the control consists of a feedback and a feed-forward components. The model-free learning adaptive feedback control (MFLAC) provides for the main system stabilization and an iterative learning control (ILC) algorithm is proposed to serve as a feedforward compensation to nonlinear and unknown dynamics and disturbances, thereby enhancing the improvement achievable with PID or MFLAC alone. It serves as the basis for simulation study of the proposed control scheme. A comparison of the performance achieved with traditional PID and MFLAC is also provided to highlight the advantages of the additional intelligent feedforward mode.

Finding optimal working sequences for flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) is a challenging task, especially if uncontrollable events, such as machine breakdowns, can occur in these systems. In this paper, we continue our previous work within the area of FMS scheduling by extending our methods to uncontrollable systems. For this sake, the ideas of probabilistic finite automata are combined with the modeling formalism of extended finite automata. Next, an A*-based scheduling algorithm, minimizing the expectation value of the FMS cycle time is designed. © 2007 IEEE.

This paper presents a methodology for maintenance-interval scheduling of equipment considering maintenance effect. By means of an operable ordering list of maintenance effects, all elements in a system can be ranked. For different purpose, maintenance intervals of elements can be scheduled as below. In order to reduce maintenance cost remarkably within a scale of system availability decrease, maintenance intervals of some elements with smaller maintenance effects are lengthened to decrease the number of system maintenance;In order to keep original system availability while reducing maintenance cost, maintenance intervals of some elements with larger maintenance effects are shortened to increase system availability, and at the same time maintenance intervals of some elements with smaller maintenance effects are lengthened to decrease the number of system maintenance. Based on this method, the maintenance intervals of equipments in thermal power stations are scheduled by use of the actual data from Kyushu Electric Power Co. of Japan, and thereby the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified. The proposed method can be adopted for many kinds of equipments or systems. © 2007 IEEE.
