In response to the national dual carbon policy, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) are currently attracting much attention. This paper proposes optimal CCUS planning for multi-energy system. In this multi-energy system, transmission network and natural gas network are coupled via conversion and storage devices in the energy hubs. The CCUS planning is formulated based on a source-sink matching method to analyze the CO2 capture points, CO 2 storage points and CO 2 transportation routes. Furthermore, the original CCUS planning problem is reformulated as a mixed integer second order cone programming (MISOCP) and subsequently solved to guarantee a satisfactory convergence performance. Numerical studies on an urban multi-energy system are implemented to verify the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed methodology over conventional scheme.

Compared with separate solar or wind generation, the hybrid wind-solar-hydro renewable portfolio can achieve better generation characteristics due to their temporal-spatial complementarities. This paper proposes optimal portfolio of wind-solar-hydro hybrid renewable generation based on variable speed pumped storage (VSPS). In this portfolio, the complementarities of hydro-solar-wind hybrid renewable energy sources (RESs) are fully exploited via various conversion and storage devices for zero carbon 100% renewable supplies. Compared to traditional fixed speed pumped storage (FSPS), the VSPS has obvious advantages in power regulation and renewable accommodation, which is comprehensively modeled to capture its dynamic operational dispatchability and flexibility. The portfolio production, conversion, storage, and consumption are formulated via a two-stage framework, which takes the minimum system investment cost as the objective function. Case studies on southwest China are performed to show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed methodology on cost-effective accommodation.

Poorly damped systems exhibit a high oscillatory behavior making them harder to control. The paper explores the possibilities of controlling a poorly damped system using different fractional order control approaches such as the Fractional Order Internal Model control (FOIMC) and the Fractional Order Proportional Integral (FOPI) controllers. The case study is chosen to be a highly nonlinear experimental platform consisting of a vertical take-off and landing platform. The performances of the closed loops with the two fractional order controllers are compared experimentally by analyzing reference tracking, disturbance rejection and robustness. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.

This paper deals with the upgrade and testing of the of the Ultra-Low Iota Super Elongated Stellarator of the University of the Basque Country. The main upgrades affect to the coil system but also to the microwave source and the data acquisition system. Therefore, it is necessary to update its State-Space model. The updated model is validated by means of experimental output data showing an accurate matching with the real system. Then, in order to test the new model, a Model Predictive control-MPC scheme is successfully implemented both in simulation and experimentally using a real-time control platform. © 2022 IEEE.

Communication-based vehicle safety applications have the potential to take traffic safety to the next level. This type of application envisions that vehicles on the road exchange traffic safety relevant data in order to cooperate toward traffic accident prevention, improved traffic efficiency and better driving experience. In this context, this paper provides an analysis of the vehicle-To-vehicle coverage in a two-lane driving scenario for the visible light communication (VLC) technology. Thus, it provides the experimental evaluation of this coverage range using a VLC prototype based on standard LED vehicle rear lights. The experimental results demonstrate a communication range of at least 50 meters, with an initial 2-8 meters region not covered by the receiver's FOV, when the vehicles are on adjacent lanes. The analysis of bit error rate results shows that even with an adequate signal processing, the number of errors can increase by about two order of magnitude when the vehicles are located on neighboring lanes. © 2021 IEEE.

In recent years, the error-state Kalman filter (ErKF) has been extensively employed across various applications, including but not limited to robotics, aerospace, and localization. However, incorporating constraints into the ErKF framework when state constraint is necessary has remained a challenging task due to its intrinsic properties. This paper explores all possible ways to achieve this goal in the context of the estimate projection method. In particular, the constraint can be enforced before or after the ErKF’s correction step. We approach the problem from a mathematical perspective by deriving analytical solutions and discussing their statistical properties. We prove that the two mentioned methods are statistically identical for a linear system with linear constraints. Conversely, the filter’s behavior remains uncertain in the presence of linearized constraints. However, we provide a special case of the nonlinear constraint, wherein the results of the linear case remain valid. To support our theorem and verify the filter’s performance when the assumptions are invalidated, we present two Monte Carlo simulations under the increasing initialization error and the constraint’s incompleteness. The simulation results clearly confirm our insights and lead to the conclusion that constraining the error-state after the correction may offer superior outcomes compared to its competitor. © 2023, CC BY.

Total variation signal denoising is an effective nonlinear filtering method, which is suitable for the restoration of piecewise constant signals disturbed by white Gaussian noises. Towards efficient denoising of piecewise constant signals, a new total variation denoising algorithm based on an improved non-convex penalty function is proposed in this paper. While ensuring the objective function is convex, a new non-convex penalty is designed. The denoising efficiency is improved by updating the dynamic total variational adjustment in the penalty function to the static adjustment. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed denoising algorithm improved the denoising efficiency without affecting the denoising effect. The overall performance was shown better than the current excellent denoising algorithm. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In this paper, we propose a hybrid algorithm that combines an improved Artificial Potential Field (APF) method with the Simulated Annealing (SA) algorithm for path planning of an electric power operation robot manipulator in complex distribution grid environments. To address the unreachable target issue inherent in traditional APF, we introduce a distance regulation factor to optimize the repulsive function. This modification allows the manipulator to smoothly approach the target point as it nears, while the repulsion from obstacles gradually decreases. Additionally, to overcome the limitations of the traditional SA algorithm, such as its tendency to get trapped in local minimum solutions and its inefficiency in complex environments, we propose an adaptive temperature rise strategy. This strategy increases the temperature, enhancing the probability of escaping local optimal solutions. When the APF algorithm becomes trapped in a local optimum, the improved SA algorithm is applied to escape the local minimum. Once the local optimum is avoided, the algorithm switches back to APF to continue the path planning process. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed improved APF-SA algorithm adapts effectively to various complex environments, achieving shorter planning times and higher success rates compared to traditional APF and SA algorithms. It successfully resolves the unreachable target and local minimum problems associated with APF. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed APF-SA fusion algorithm is validated through experiments conducted on an electric power operation robot experimental platform for distribution grid applications.

This paper presents the design of supervisory model predictive control for HVAC systems with consideration of peak demand shaving and thermal comfort. In this work, we analyze the operating points with the thermal comfort requirement. Afterwards, we linearize the nonlinear dynamic model to a linear time-varying model. In particular, we specify that the operating point of the open-loop HVAC system satisfies the thermal comfort condition. This makes the predicted mean vote (PMV) equal to zero or nearly to zero. Subsequently, we calculate the zone temperature, the zone humidity ratio, and the volumetric flow rate. When considering the time-varying disturbance profiles, it appears that the operating points are time-varying. We observe that the coefficient of performance (COP) and the operating points are time-varying which lead to time-varying model. Moreover, we design supervisory control (SC) and model predictive control (MPC) for linear time-varying model. In the SC design, we aim to find the optimal reference zone temperature which is used as the reference signal for MPC. In the MPC design, the objectives are twofold. First, the zone temperature tracks the reference signal. Second, both electrical energy cost and deviation of desired thermal comfort are minimized. The computer simulation shows that MPC of time-varying HVAC system yields the best reference tracking. In addition, it reduces total electrical energy cost the most. We conclude that the optimal temperature reference can be effectively applied to the building HVAC systems while the occupants feel comfortable and the total electrical energy cost is the lowest.

In the context in which pedestrians are the most exposed road user category in urban areas, this paper presents the results of an experimental demonstration of a new system designed to assist pedestrians in safely using a crosswalk. The proposed architecture consists of a pedestrian detection and localization unit that detects pedestrians in the crosswalk area, a visible light communications component that transmits this information toward the approaching vehicles using the visible light communications technology and a graphical user interface that enables the driver to receive relevant traffic safety information. The experimental investigation has shown that based on a multi-sensor data fusion approach, pedestrians are detected with an overall 100% detection rate, whereas the low power crosswalk sign VLC emitter can provide a communication range of up to 27 ― 40 meters, with a data rate of 100 kb/s and a BER in the 10-7― 10-4 range. Therefore, the experimental results indicate that the proposed VLC system has high performance in traffic situations that could pose serious issues to other concepts. © 2022 IEEE.
