In this work, we propose a concentrator lens - antenna arrangement, potentially suitable for infrared sensing and energy harvesting rectenna systems. The structure consists of a pixel antenna, self-adapting for the direction of the incident infrared radiation, and a concentrator lens, both optimized for the mid-infrared spectrum. The silicon substrate lens is situated above the pixel antenna, enabling the concentration of the incident light on the antenna;silicon was chosen due to its transparency in the IR spectrum. We examine how various parameters of the lens, in conjunction with the different states of the pixel antenna, affects the performance of the system. The simulations show that the gain of the arrangement increases considerably in correlation with the radius of the lens. The results suggest that the energy conversion efficiency of infrared rectenna systems can be enhanced by several orders of magnitude with the utilization of the proposed arrangement. © 2025 Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Managing anesthesia and hemodynamic regulation during surgical procedures poses significant challenges due to patient-specific variability and the complex interactions of administered drugs. While advanced monitoring systems and Target-Controlled Infusion (TCI) devices enhance precision in drug delivery, their reliance on manual adjustments limits real-time adaptability. This study investigates two advanced control strategies–centralized Model Predictive Control (MPC) and decentralized fractional-order control–within a multivariable framework designed to regulate hypnosis, analgesia, and hemodynamic stabilization. Virtual patient simulations were used to evaluate these approaches under diverse anesthetic and, notably, hemodynamic conditions. The findings reveal that MPC delivers superior precision in maintaining the Bispectral Index (BIS) but tends to apply more aggressive adjustments to hemodynamic variables. In contrast, fractional-order control ensures smoother responses, though its ability to handle disturbances is less robust in certain scenarios. This study highlights the trade-offs between these strategies and advocates for further exploration of hybrid solutions to enhance patient safety and surgical outcomes.

Privacy-Preserving Utilization of Distribution System Flexibility for Enhanced TSO-DSO Interoperability: A Novel Machine Learning-Based Optimal Power Flow Approach

Due to the transformation of the power system, the effective use of flexibility from the distribution system (DS) is becoming crucial for efficient network management. Leveraging this flexibility requires interoperability among stakeholders, including Transmission System Operators (TSOs) and Distribution System Operators (DSOs). However, data privacy concerns among stakeholders present significant challenges for utilizing this flexibility effectively. To address these challenges, we propose a machine learning (ML)-based method in which the technical constraints of the DSs are represented by ML models trained exclusively on non-sensitive data. Using these models, the TSO can solve the optimal power flow (OPF) problem and directly determine the dispatch of flexibility-providing units (FPUs)—in our case, distributed generators (DGs)-in a single round of communication. To achieve this, we introduce a novel neural network (NN) architecture specifically designed to efficiently represent the feasible region of the DSs, ensuring computational effectiveness. Furthermore, we incorporate various PQ charts rather than idealized ones, demonstrating that the proposed method is adaptable to a wide range of FPU characteristics. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed method, we benchmark it against the standard AC-OPF on multiple DSs with meshed connections and multiple points of common coupling (PCCs) with varying voltage magnitudes. The numerical results indicate that the proposed method achieves performant results while prioritizing data privacy. Additionally, since this method directly determines the dispatch of FPUs, it eliminates the need for an additional disaggregation step. By representing the DSs technical constraints through ML models trained exclusively on nonsensitive data, the transfer of sensitive information between stakeholders is prevented. Consequently, even if reverse engineering is applied to these ML models, no sensitive data can be extracted. This allows

This paper explores the applicability of generative AI (genAI), specifically Large Language Models (LLMs), for the automatic generation and configuration of metaheuristic algorithms to address a real-world engineering problem: the optimal parameter estimation of time-delay systems in interconnected heating-cooling loops. The study introduces a pioneering workflow and iterative architecture with feedback within the emerging field of genAI-driven optimization for real optimization problems, eliminating the need for manually crafted or modified algorithms. This automated system empowers domain experts in engineering to solve complex optimization problems with minimal knowledge of optimization algorithms, lowering the barrier to entry for sophisticated algorithm use. We demonstrate how LLMs can generate effective optimizers under conditions like connstrained optimization problems where the solution lies near the boundaries of the search space. Four state-of-the-art LLMs (closed and open-sourced) have been selected for experiments. These are GPT-4o, GPT-4o mini, Claude Sonnet 3.5 and Llama 3.1. All studied LLMs generated metaheuristics that outperformed the initialization baseline optimization method (Random Search and CMA-ES). Notably, the Claude Sonnet 3.5 model generated a metaheuristic with the best mean results, almost matching the performance of the tuned state-of-the-art DISH algorithm, as an example of adaptive Differential Evolution. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

The first course of control is under a critical review. Both the teaching material covered and the teaching methods require new considerations. Introducing interactivity in the education process makes the learning more successful and enjoyable. MATLAB provides an effective environment for learning and applying different disciplines. Control101 is a new MATLAB toolbox under development which provides tools for interactive learning of control disciplines. This paper presents the framework for teaching discrete control algorithms applied for processes containing large dead times.

Induction heating is widely used in industrial furnaces because of its rapid response time and high energy efficiency. To design and optimize these furnaces, computer-aided simulations are essential. This study aims to develop an accurate temperature field model for a square cross-section steel billet in an induction furnace by leveraging various parameters in COMSOL Multiphysics software. The simulation analysis incorporated temperature dynamics, considering skin depth, temperaturedependent, and constant parameters of the steel billet. The datadriven model was converted into a state-space representation utilizing MATLAB's System Identification Toolbox. This conversion facilitated the design of a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) with integral gain and pole placement. Further, these controllers' performance was analyzed, and controllers were successfully implemented to regulate the temperature field of the billet from initial temperature to reference temperature, utilizing the distributed parameter system control circuit.

Modelling asynchronous message passing in small cluster environments

The overall performance characteristics of cluster systems depend heavily on the pattern and on the amount of communication between the nodes. The performance may be improved by using asynchronous (nonblocking) message passing, because it allows communication and computation to overlap, thereby hiding a part of the communication overhead. This paper develops an analytical model to capture the performance-related issues of asynchronous communication in a small, fully switched cluster environment. The parameters of the model can be identified from measurable program and hardware characteristics, allowing the model to anticipate the performance behaviour of complex parallel applications. The paper's main contribution is to describe the effect of parallel communication channels on the effective bandwidth of a single node. The model is validated by comparing the predicted and measured performance of two different broadcast primitives for a range of message sizes as a function of the number of the participating nodes.

The solution area and fitness-based algorithms of the content-driven template-based layout system

People use their mobile devices every day to access a wide variety digital content. The diversity of mobile platforms and that of mobile device capabilities requires providing automatic layout solutions for online content. For the purposes of this paper, our solutions focus on online magazines and newspapers. The Content-Driven Template-Based Layout System (CTLS) is a template-based online magazine layout approach. This approach facilitates in defining hierarchical layouts from basic layout elements and splitter components. The goal is to effectively calculate the resulting adaptation method for a particular layout element at any level of the layout hierarchy. This paper introduces both the solution area-based algorithm and the fitness-based algorithm of the CTLS approach. These algorithms apply inequalities rather than equations. Inequalities, represented by solution areas (polygons), provide the flexibility within the approach.

The paper presents a 3D healthcare informatics support for Hand Rehabilitation after injury. As a novelty, the application uses the Leap Motion sensor for patient's gestures recognition, and videos to illustrate to the users the hand exercise to perform. The implemented application provides feedback to users regarding the correctness of the performed recovery gestures/exercises. The data related to hand rehabilitation is saved in a database and offers to the Medical Rehabilitation Experts the possibility to monitor the patients in a more consistent manner. To assess the efficiency and accuracy of the application the application will be tested following a usability plan. © 2018 The authors and IOS Press. All rights reserved.
