Figurai abstraction test was proven to be one of the best ways of measuring inteiiigence. Over the last year we have been working on a smartphone version of such a test which included adaptiveness. When the user is solving the test, the difficulty of the next exercise is determined by the previously answered questions, meaning if the majority of the answers were correct, the difficulty level is raised, otherwise lowered. In this application the exercises were randomly generated using pre determined patterns. This way the number of different exercises were significantly higher than in the case of such a test, where all the exercises are created one by one. The next step is to make the generation of these patterns automatic, thus raising the number of differently generated exercises even more. We use a description language to describe the logic behind the exercises, calling the different logics rules. One of the major challenges is to determine which of these rules are solvable by humans, thus are usable in the test. We are planning on doing this by formulating conditions. If these conditions are met in a generated rule, the rule is considered solvable. The second problem is determining the difficulty of each rule. A naive difficulty level can be determined for each rule based on how many different entities it contains and other similar factors. This difficulty level can be later on fine-tuned by a series of tests made by a group of people, whose intelligence level is determined by a different test. © 2016 IEEE.

Video on Demand (VoD) streaming makes up an increasing portion of global IP traffic. Traditionally, data is served by content providers directly, putting a huge network load on the servers. We propose using our WebRTC-based protocols WebPeer and CodedWebPeer to create a P2P-assisted VoD streaming system with network coding. We introduce two metrics: network health to measure overall data saturation and network stability to show if the peers in the network are able to serve each other without the help of the server. We have implemented a testbed to emulate real-life network scenarios that includes a probabilistic model of peer behavior. We show through measurements that by applying network coding, network health is increased by up to 100% without changing the cache size or number of peers. Furthermore, network stability is achieved using up to half the cache compared to the uncoded approach, without increasing the servers load. Finally, to validate the scalability of our solution, we tested our protocols in a network with more than 100 tablets to deliver smooth video playback.

Optimal growth and development in childhood and adolescence is crucial for lifelong health and well-being. Here we used data from 2,325 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight from 71 million participants, to report the height and body-mass index (BMI) of children and adolescents aged 5-19 years on the basis of rural and urban place of residence in 200 countries and territories from 1990 to 2020. In 1990, children and adolescents residing in cities were taller than their rural counterparts in all but a few high-income countries. By 2020, the urban height advantage became smaller in most countries, and in many high-income western countries it reversed into a small urban-based disadvantage. The exception was for boys in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa and in some countries in Oceania, south Asia and the region of central Asia, Middle East and north Africa. In these countries, successive cohorts of boys from rural places either did not gain height or possibly became shorter, and hence fell further behind their urban peers. The difference between the age-standardized mean BMI of children in urban and rural areas was <1.1 kg m in the vast majority of countries. Within this small range, BMI increased slightly more in cities than in rural areas, except in south Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and some countries in central and eastern Europe. Our results show that in much of the world, the growth and developmental advantages of living in cities have diminished in the twenty-first century, whereas in much of sub-Saharan Africa they have amplified.

High capacity storage systems distribute files across several storage devices (nodes) and apply an erasure code to meet availability and reliability requirements. Since devices can lose network connectivity or fail permanently, a dynamic repair mechanism must be put in place. In such cases a new recovery node gets connected to a given subset of the operating nodes and receives a part of the stored data. The objective of this paper is to investigate data survival for Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC) as a function of topology and communication overhead, defined by the number of connections and the number of transmitted packets to the recovery node, respectively. The paper includes two main contributions. First, a sufficient set of conditions for quasi-infinite longevity of the stored data is derived. Second, a comparison using experimental results shows that RLNC can be up to 50% more effective than traditional erasure codes like Reed-Solomon.

GrainAutLine is an interdisciplinary microscopy image analysis tool with domain specific smart functions to partially automate the processing of marble thin section images. It allows the user to create a clean grain boundary image which is a starting point of several archaeometric and geologic analyses. The semi-automatic tools minimize the need for carefully drawing the grain boundaries manually, even in cases where twin crystals prohibit the use of classic edge detection based boundary detection. Due to the semi-automatic approach, the user has full control over the process and can modify the automatic results before finalizing a specific step. This approach guarantees high quality results both in cases where the process is easy to automate, and also if it needs more help from the user. This paper presents the basic operation of the system and details about the provided tools as a case study for an interdisciplinary, semi-automatic image processing application.

The viability of any multi-level meta-modeling technology clings on the correct and exact definition of the underlying instantiation concept. Although multi-level instantiation has been well researched and conceptualized, current methodologies mostly limit their scopes to design-time modeling. Hence, state-of-the-art meta-modeling seriously neglects important practical needs of run-time modeling. In this paper, we present two incarnations of our Dynamic Multi-Level Algebra (DMLA), a modular, semantically correct multi-level meta-modeling formalism consisting of (i) an algebraic ASM foundation, (ii) a flexibly replaceable bootstrap mechanism for defining modelled entities, (iii) a corresponding set of logical validation formulae for establishing instantiation semantics. The expected features of DMLA clearly derive from practical modeling needs so that the resulting mechanism be applicable for both design-time and run-time modeling. The core components of the theory are explained both individually and by comparing their two versions of DMLA. Hence, the aim of this style of presentation is to showcase the balance struck between parsimoniousness and wanted modularity within our semantically correct, practical multi-level meta-modeling approach. A simplified networking model is also included to demonstrate the approach.

Systems and control are all around us. System view, understanding systems and how they are controlled is important for everyone. The behavior of systems is determined by some fundamental principles which can be understood by everyone. The main principles governing systems and control are presented on different levels. The first level is dedicated for everyone. Comics-like interpretation is provided with explanations. The second level discusses the main topics dedicated for the interested students. Several case studies demonstrate how system view is considered in different areas of life. With this approach systems in different areas of life could be better understood contributing to better decisions influencing their performance. The third level provides deeper insight into some aspects of modern mathematical system theory, to geometric view of control systems. The material is available on a website on the internet. © 2016
