Next generation use-cases of wireless IP networks, including especially the Massive Machine Type Communications and IoT applications for the distribution of sensory and similar data will require the capability to handle large number of connections while maintaining a low-power footprint in order to function efficiently during long-term deployments. The reduction of the packetisation overhead resulting from the adaptation of header compression could potentially decrease the battery usage of network heavy applications via diminished wireless interface activity. Normally header compression is employed to minimise the overhead of IP-based cellular traffic between two connected peers. This paper presents for the first time comparative power consumption measurements for Robust Header Compression version 2 (RoHCv2) using WiFi and LTE. We find that the adoption of header compression on modern mobile devices will generally not result in increased power consumption based on the extra complexity added by the execution of the algorithms. We also show that the usage of RoHCv2 can potentially even decrease the battery drain on average by about 0.05 W when payloads are small.

This paper presents a search for new heavy particles decaying into a pair of top quarks using 139 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The search is performed using events consistent with pair production of high-transverse-momentum top quarks and their subsequent decays into the fully hadronic final states. The analysis is optimized for resonances decaying into a $$ t\overline{t} $$ pair with mass above 1.4 TeV, exploiting a dedicated multivariate technique with jet substructure to identify hadronically decaying top quarks using large-radius jets and evaluating the background expectation from data. No significant deviation from the background prediction is observed. Limits are set on the production cross-section times branching fraction for the new Z′ boson in a topcolor-assisted-technicolor model. The Z′ boson masses below 3.9 and 4.7 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level for the decay widths of 1% and 3%, respectively.

In this paper, a method is presented to solve distributed coverage using cooperative sensors. These sensors are aware of their surroundings and can act according to their state. Since the capabilities of these sensors are limited a central communication is not possible. Therefore distributed algorithms are provided which can be executed by the sensors independently. These sensors will enter the area through one point and the algorithm has to provide dispersion which will lead to the coverage. In my work several algorithms are presented in order to minimize the number of steps required by the sensors to reach full coverage. To compare these algorithms a simulator is also created which will be able to visualize and test the performance of these methods.

Figural abstraction test was proven to be one of the best ways of measuring intelligence. Over the last year we have been working on a smartphone version of such a test which included adaptiveness. When the user is solving the test, the difficulty of the next exercise is determined by the previously answered questions, meaning if the majority of the answers were correct, the difficulty level is raised, otherwise lowered. In this application the exercises were randomly generated using pre-determined patterns. This way the number of different exercises were significantly higher than in the case of such a test, where all the exercises are created one by one. The next step is to make the generation of these patterns automatic, thus raising the number of differently generated exercises even more. We use a description language to describe the logic behind the exercises, calling the different logics rules. One of the major challenges is to determine which of these rules are solvable by humans, thus are usable in the test. We are planning on doing this by formulating conditions. If these conditions are met in a generated rule, the rule is considered solvable. The second problem is determining the difficulty of each rule. A naive difficulty level can be determined for each rule based on how many different entities it contains and other similar factors. This difficulty level can be later on fine-tuned by a series of tests made by a group of people, whose intelligence level is determined by a different test.

Due to the increasing computational capacity of embedded systems, the design of aerial surveillance drones became affordable. However individual robots are less efficient than those who are forming a collective. These systems mostly use decentralised algorithms and communication networks. We present a distributed, communication aided solution for a problem in which a group of autonomous mobile robots patrol over a given area and intercept the detected targets. The robots are oblivious, they use local sensing, and they can share information within their neighbourhood. We adopt the Multi-Orbit-Surrounding (MOS) based Aerial Surveillance concept into a square grid graph based environment, and we will prove that the concept can detect and surround an intruder in finite time.

Physiological sensors are widely used in order to infer the mental effort of a subject during performing different tasks. Desktop or mobile applications like educational games can gain from such information in order to fine tune the difficulty or the type of a given assignment. Discussions can be found on the advantages and disadvantages of different sensor types (like EEG, ECG, pupillometry, GSR etc.). Machine learning technologies are used to find the baseline of a subject and infer the mental effort levels. In this paper we investigate and compare different types of physiological sensors and classification techniques. Real life experiments with mobile adaptive educational framework (AdaptEd) are presented to support our results.
