A quadratic regression model-based predictive control method is presented for grid-side converters. The control scheme calculates the cost function for seven voltage vectors of the inverter and extends it to the entire modulation region using regression. Then a constrained optimization problem must be solved to find the most feasible control action in this continuous control space. The found optimal voltage vector can be generated using Pulse-Width Modulation methods. The control method is validated in a custom Hardware-in-the-Loop environment using model-based rapid-prototyping tools of Matlab/Simulink. In the last years of this decade, the recognition of human activity has become important to a wide range of researchers in pattern recognition and human-computer interaction as a result of its wide range of real-world applications, such as gesture recognition, biometric user identification, surveillance by authorities, behavior analysis and health monitoring of the elderly. Human Activity Recognition (HAR) has become a significant topic in mobile and ubiquitous computing as a result of the widespread use of wearable sensor devices and the Internet of Things (loT). Deep Learning (DL) is one of the most commonly used problem-solving techniques in the HAR system. Nevertheless, there are major challenges in applying HAR to problems in recognizing various human activities. In this paper, presented and showed the activities of implementing a new combination of DL methods for multi-class user activity identification to HAR. Using DL methods can be extracting discriminative features automatically from raw sensor data. Specifically, in this work, we proposed a hybrid architecture that features a combination of Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BILSTM) networks and support vector Machines (SVM) for the HAR task. The UCI HAR dataset is used to test the model, it consists of accelerometer and gyroscope data obtained from smartphones. The dataset is split into 30 % for testing and 70% for training. The results for the (BILSTM-SVM) model, showed that the highest accuracy for all users was 98.74 %, higher than all previous models using the same dataset. © 2023 IEEE.

Signature verification is a very common task in the field of document analysis used for the identification and validation of individuals. Many approaches can be used for signature classification. Using a machine-learning-based system is one of the most common approaches. This paper uses machine learning to classify signatures as genuine or forged. It also used a dynamic time-warping approach in the preprocessing step to produce data for training purposes. This approach differs from using it in the classification phase, which is a common practice in signature verification. The work targets online signatures, which are obtained using digital devices. Different databases were used to evaluate the accuracy of the verification systems, and four different algorithms were used for classification. The results are very promising. The minimum error rate achieved was 2.09% for the MCYT-100 dataset, 3.34% for the SVC2004 dataset, $\mathbf{1. 6 8 \%}$ for the SigComp’11-Chinese dataset, and $\mathbf{3. 6 8 \%}$ for the SigComp’11- Dutch dataset.

This paper presents a new global planning method for car-like robots to use in autonomous robotic exploration. The base of the method is a tree built by the exploration method to represent the environment for goal selection. Using the tree as the basis the global path can be constructed with very little computational cost. The method will then be augmented with the acknowledgment of loops in the environment. This way both the goal selection and path planning are able to manage loops, which leads to shorter paths between the initial and final configurations in a looped environment. The two methods are tested against the widely used HybridA ∗ method in a tree-structured and a looped environment. In the former, the tree-based planner outperforms the HybridA * planner by producing a smoother trajectory. In the latter, the loop-based planner achieves approximately the same performance, but with a lower computational cost.

Nowadays new information and communication technologies (IT) directly influence teaching methods, practices and resources. The use of virtual reality (VR) technology in education enables new approaches that can enhance, guide, and stimulate students' interest in learning while allowing them to experience the subject and acquire sensory and intuitive cognition in a more personal and realistic environment. This research aims to answer the question: can constructive spatial activity with real materials in real space be replaced by virtual space and digital tools in terms of assessing stability and knowledge acquisition? This current pilot study aims to examine the feasibility of our research setup and analysis methods while children are asked to perform an intuitive creative process to construct a structure in real and digital space. We involved twelve school-Age (8,47 years average) from an elementary school, and we randomly allocated them to group 1 (real space construction) and to group 2 (tablet application construction). We created a behavioral coding scheme for the widely used and validated Noldus Observer XT (version 15) video behavior analyzer software. The video analyses showed that the creation phases defined in the construction process appeared on both real space and in a virtual setting, confirming the assumption that the acquisition of knowledge and skills related to stability can also be phased. Based on our pilot research on a small sample, the chosen observation and research methodology is feasible. We predict that the real-space constructive task applied in the measurement can be replaced by a digital interface to experience stability. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents a MATLAB Graphical User Interface (GUI) based tool that determines the performance evaluation metrics of the physically unclonable functions (PUFs). The PUFs are hardware security primitives which can be utilized in several hardware security applications like integrated circuits protection, device authentication, secret key generation, and hardware obfuscation. Like any other technology approach, PUFs evaluation requires testing different performance metrics, each of which can be determined by at least one mathematical equation. The proposed tool (PUFs Tool) reads the PUF instances' output and then computes and generates the values of the main PUFs' performance metrics: uniqueness, reliability, uniformity, and bit-aliasing. In addition, it generates a bar code for each PUF instance considered in the evaluation process. The PUFs Tool is designed and developed using the app designer of MATLAB software 2021b. © 2022 IEEE.

We present a diffusion probabilistic model (DPM) capable of generating high-quality electroencephalography (EEG) signals. In particular, we investigate the fidelity of synthesized visually evoked potentials and the performance of the novel class-conditioned continuous-time DPM that generates the signals. We carefully select our neural network architecture to prevent generated frequency artifacts in the multi-channel synthesized EEG signals. With progressive distillation, we are able to achieve a single-step diffusion model that still has a competitive performance. With generative metrics and statistical analysis, we show that using DPMs for brain signal generation is feasible. © 2023 IEEE.

Signatures are one of the most commonly used biometrics for individuals’ identification and verification. Several approaches are proposed every year by researchers to improve the accuracy of the verification systems. A machine learning-based system is presented in this work. The LighGBM is used for the classification process. The SigComp’11 Chinese dataset is used to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed system. The results showed that the proposed system achieved a robust system compared to the state of the art. The system is applied using different combinations of signature features to eliminate the factor of the feature selection. The minimum AER achieved was 1.98%.

Blood pressure is one of the most vital signals characterizing the health status of the human body. Based on this physiological data, many current and future diseases can be detected. Therefore, having a device that can continuously measure blood pressure without a cuff or medical intervention would be highly beneficial. This study aims to investigate noninvasive blood pressure measurement with the help of a low-power microcontroller, namely STM32F446RE. These measuring methods are based on deep neural networks and utilize externally measured photoplethysmography (PPG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. The performance of the proposed models is compared to similar solutions from the literature and inspected for memory usage and runtime. The results of this work show that a convolutional layer-based model can be used for proper blood pressure estimation in such an energy-efficient device. © 2023 IEEE.

Background: Aphasia describes the lack of the already gained ability to use language in a common way. "Language" here covers all variations of forming or understanding messages. Objectives: The APH-Alarm project aims to develop a service concept that provides alternative communication options for people with Aphasia to trigger timely help when needed. It considers that a typical user may not be familiar with modern technologies and offers several simple and intuitive options. Methods: The approach is based on event detection of gestures (during daytime or in bed), movement pattern recognition in bed, and an easy-to-use pictogram-based smartphone app. Results: Agile evaluation of the smartphone app showed a promising outcome. Conclusion: The idea of a versatile and comprehensive solution for aphasic people to easily contact private or public helpers based on their actions or automatic detection is promising and will be further investigated in an upcoming field trial. © 2023 The authors, AIT Austrian Institute of technology and IOS Press.
