It is well known that beyond the fact that fuzzy systems have favorable modeling capabilities from the viewpoint of accuracy, they also have outstanding inherent interpretability possibilities, which is a rather unique property among modeling architectures and which is a strong motivation for their research and application. This paper focuses on both mentioned property types and proposes a new technique for adjusting between accuracy and interpretability in modeling systems where fuzzy rule based architectures together with evolutionary algorithms are used for knowledge extraction. First, an inconsistency problem of conventional interpretable fuzzy systems is resolved. Then, a new search space narrowing technique for evolutionary algorithms is proposed, which can be applied for constructing interpretable fuzzy rule bases. Finally, the favorable properties of this new approach will be verified experimentally by carrying out simulation runs.

Cognitive info-communications is a rapidly developing scientific paradigm. It integrates the representations of different research fields within a common model, that promotes the fast transfer and synthesis of scientific results. In this paper, an ambient assisted living framework is considered and it is explained, what kind of advantages can be taken from the integration of the framework with the paradigm of cognitive info-communications. The ambient assisted living framework is based on the intelligent space concept, which is realized in the VirCA platform, and it is extended with the use of semantic information. In the other direction, it is explained, what kind of advantages can be taken from the use of semantic information in the case of a coginfocom system. It is presented as well, how the use of semantic information and the paradigm of cognitive info-communications can enhance the efficiency and the performance of an assisted living application.

Cognitive Infocommunications (CogInfoCom) is an emerging discipline that investigates synergies between infocommunications and the cognitive sciences, with the goal of creating engineering applications in which systems with various levels of cognitive capability are enabled to work together more effectively. While infocommunications deals with the error-free encoding, transmission and decoding of raw data, CogInfoCom aims to transmit information at a higher, conceptual level in a way that appeals to the receiver's cognitive capabilities. Thus, CogInfoCom may have implications for a wide variety of fields in the future, including virtual reality, 3D Internet and Internet of Things. In this paper, we provide a brief, application-oriented overview of the existing background of CogInfoCom, and outline future perspectives for the field.

In recent years increasing attention has been paid to high speed drives, where the frequency ratio is low owing to the necessarily high fundamental and limited switching frequencies. Thus, the selection of the applied PWM technique in the power electronic converters becomes crucial. The widely applied Space Vector Modulation (SVM) technique implemented in ultra high speed induction machine (USIM) drive is studied, where the speed of the USIM is controlled mainly by Field Oriented Control (FOC) and less frequently by a closed loop V/f control. Two sampling methods of SVM technique, the Regular Sampled (RS) and the Naturally Sampled (NS) are compared in the above control methods both for synchronous and asynchronous PWM. Our finding is that RS-SVM can result in instabilities in FOC, while the NS-SVM can generate subharmonic and DC current components with considerable amplitudes.

This paper presents human-robot communication for a monitoring support system in an Intelligent Space. An Intelligent Space (iSpace) is a space in which many intelligent devices are installed to observe the user's environment. In this paper, we apply the iSpace observation function to a monitoring system used for maintaining the safety of elderly persons receiving home-care support. In addition, we use a mobile robot as a tool to deliver monitoring results to care assistants. We focus on an ethological approach for designing robot behaviors for human-robot communication. The implementation of these robot behaviors based on an ethological approach, and the results of an experiment conducted to evaluate these behaviors, are then presented.

Research on CogInfoCom channels has thus far focused on channels in which syntactics and semantics have a static relationship, and in which information is communicated through the transmission of discrete CogInfoCom messages between two communicational endpoints. In this paper, we make a first attempt to extend the concept of CogInfoCom channels to incorporate dynamicons, which are forms of communication in which two or more communicational endpoints are bound to the same dynamic processes. Information, then, is the transmitted dynamics itself, instead of being represented by a set of messages which are external to the process of communication. After a short introduction to what we mean by the concept of dynamicons, we present a reference model to this problem which is suitable for Internet-based communication characterized by unpredictable time delays. We discuss how the generalization of the reference model can lead to interesting and novel applications in CogInfoCom.

An important challenge in CogInfoCom is how to design multi-sensory signals which are capable of communicating high-level information to users. Although there have been investigations on how to design groups of signals for this purpose (referred to as CogInfoCom channels), and how to map high-level concepts onto patterns of sensory signals across different modalities, one general question has still not been addressed: how should a system decide when to provide information to users in interactive CogInfoCom systems? This paper represents an attempt to bridge this gap, and to provide a taxonomy of CogInfoCom trigger types in order to help answer this question.
