This paper investigates the problem of efficient data dissemination in Mobile Ad hoc NETworks (MANETs) with high mobility. A testbed is presented; which provides a high degree of mobility in experiments. The testbed consists of 10 autonomous robots with mobile phones mounted on them. The mobile phones form an IEEE 802.11g ad hoc network to communicate with each other. A dynamic network topology is assumed, where the mobile devices form a cooperative cluster in order to exchange data packets among each other. In our multimedia exchange scenario, the initial state is that one device carries all information, and the goal is to convey that information to all devices. A strategy is proposed that uses UDP broadcast transmissions and random linear network coding to facilitate the efficient exchange of information in the network. An application is introduced that implements this strategy on Nokia phones. The measurement results collected from the testbed are presented, and the performance of the proposed strategy is compared to a reference strategy that is based on TCP unicast connections.

Due to the large number of the resources, the frequent reengineering of manufacturing processes and the often changing product types, the maintenance of the simulation model and the provision of up-to-date input data are almost always difficult. The paper introduces new quantitative analysis method including processing time and batch calculation algorithms applied in the automatic building of discrete-event simulation systems. The simulation model and the mentioned algorithms are both directly interfaced with real execution databases and the overall solution supports the shop-floor managers in making control decisions. The applicability of the elaborated approach is illustrated by the results of experiments relying on real historical data.

Varying delay is still a challenge to handle in the comtrol of systems with feedback delay. This paper attempt to handle varying delay by a novel approach. The control structure has been already proposed, where the system with feedback delay is approximated by a non-delayed model with modified time constants. The controller is designed according to this non-delayed substitute system and the control signal is computed using its observed state vector. Tensor Product (TP) Model Transformation is utilized to make a compact polytopic representation of the observer and controller for various time delays. In this method the actual value of the feedback delay is considered as an input parameter of the TP type controller and observer. In this paper we show that the convex hull of Convex type TP model applied for LMI based controller design has effect on control performance. We introduce a concept how to improve the control performance of the system with feedback delay via convex hull manipulation.

The purpose of this paper is to present a new version of the Bacterial Algorithms used for fuzzy rule base extraction called Progressive Bacterial Algorithm. In order to explore high quality models with very good speed of convergence towards the optimal rule base, we develop an improved version of the Bacterial Evolutionary and former Bacterial Memetic Algorithms. It is shown, in case of multidimensional reference problems, by comparing with existing methods, that an efficient and fast convergent tool is obtained.

To take up the challenge of global distributed companies, Manufacturing Engineering has to be accomplished in a worldwide collaborative way. Design and development of production processes and their execution are nowadays spread all over the world. To ensure quality standards and to create synergies between spatially distributed entities, distance collaboration tools must be provided to allow cooperation even over large distances. The Virtual Reality (VR) is thereby offering beneficial capabilities to exchange current planning stages, identify problems and solve them cooperatively. This paper introduces a new approach for distance collaboration, which enables users to work in a joint virtual space, nearly as if they were working together in the same place. Therefore two full-immersive CAVE-like systems are interconnected using the VirCA (Virtual Collaboration Arena) platform. The paper describes the requirements of Mechanical Engineers towards distance collaboration tools and the technical challenges solved with the enhanced VirCA framework. This working prototype is one premier application in the field of VR-enhanced spatially distributed collaboration. A typical use case scenario is provided to highlight the interaction and cooperation capabilities offered by VirCA NET.

This paper proposes approaches for combining Iterated Greedy techniques, as state-of-the-art methods, with bacterial evolutionary algorithms based on a hybrid technique involving the Multi-Threaded Iterated Greedy heuristic and a memetic algorithm in order to efficiently solve the Permutation Flow Shop Problem on parallel computing architectures. In the present work three novel approaches are proposed by combining a variant of the Bacterial Memetic Algorithm and the recently proposed Bacterial Iterated Greedy technique with the mentioned hybrid multi-threaded approach. The techniques thus obtained are evaluated via simulation runs carried out on a series of data from the well-known Taillard's benchmark problem set. Based on the experimental results the multi-threaded hybrid methods are compared to each other and to the original techniques (i.e. to the techniques without bacterial algorithms).

This paper examines the cognitive inofocommunications preferences of active senior citizens. The study is based on quantitative questionnaire surveys and qualitative workshops held in budapest in Warsaw within the PAELIFE project [1]. Our findings show that both the user interface and the hardware and software limitations of currently widely used infocommunications tools and services raise barriers even for active Polish and Hungarian seniors of 60–70 years. Possible alternative solutions are proposed.

Several challenges can arise during augmented/virtual collaboration. In this paper, we identify and classify some of these challenges from a cognitive infocommunications (CogInfoCom) point of view. The starting point of our analysis is the VirCA NET application, which was built on the Virtual Collaboration Arena (VirCA) and developed at the MTA SZTAKI. First, we demonstrate how VirCA and VirCA NET belong to the CogInfoCom paradigm and how they are also related to Future Internet. To highlight our ideas in a practical use-case, we identify key features of infocommunication in a collaborative scenario for building industrial production layouts. In the collaborative scenario, factory planning is defined as a multi-stakeholder and multi-domain challenge, which distributed planning teams have to face. Based on the features of VirCA NET and the specifics of the scenario, we outline a list of challenges, some of which are already solved by the system to some extent, and some of which remain to be solved in future work. The challenges are presented in relation to the theoretical background of CogInfoCom engines and CogInfoCom channels, in order to further strengthen the link between augmented/virtual collaboration and the goals of CogInfoCom.

This paper presents the social behavior of a physical agent in intelligent space. Intelligent Space (iSpace) is a space in which many intelligent devices, called distributed intelligent network devices (DINDs) and including not only sensors but also actuators, are installed. Robotic devices, which provide services to users, are considered as physical agents in iSpace. For facilitating long-term communication between users and a robot, we focus on building a social relationship between a user and a robot. Toward this end, a methodology for designing social behaviors of the robot is required. Therefore, we have used an ethologically inspired approach to construct a robot behavioral model for an iSpace-based elderly monitoring support system. In this paper, the robot behavioral model is presented and implementation of robot behaviors is discussed.

The dynamic window approach to collision avoidance is a well-known method in the mobile robotics field. It provides an elegant way to navigate safely in the presence of obstacles, also taking the dynamic properties of the robot into account. There are different variants of this method, all having the same limitation, namely they use an objective function consisting of weighted terms. Different situations require different weights, however, there is no algorithm for choosing them. An inappropriate weighting can inhibit reaching the goal. This paper presents a navigation scheme based on the idea of dynamic window approach (DWA) and using receding horizon control (RHC). This method uses an objective function that does not contain weights. Kinematic and dynamic constraints of the robot are taken into account and a safe and goal-oriented motion is ensured. © 2011 IEEE.
