This paper investigates the possibility of packet error recovery in a cooperative cluster of mobile devices. We assume that these devices receive data from a broadcast transmission on their primary network interface (e.g. LTE network), and they are using a secondary network interface (e.g. ad hoc WLAN network) to form a cooperative cluster in order to exchange missing data packets among each other. Our goal is to devise a protocol that minimizes the number of packets exchanged on the secondary network whilst maximizes the number of packet errors recovered on the primary network. Moreover, we aim to repair the packet losses on-the-fly (as the data is being received), which also imposes real-time constraints on the protocol. We propose a solution based on random linear network coding to form cooperative clusters of mobile devices to facilitate the efficient exchange of information among them. We also introduce a demo application that implements this technique on Nokia phones. Then we present our testbed and the collected measurement results in order to evaluate the performance of our protocol.

Abstract Long distance teleoperation formulates a current control problem task yet to be solved, primarily due to the difficulty to compensate for signal latency. Predictive and model-based control can only give satisfying results if proper description of the system's behavior is provided. The interdisciplinary field of telesurgery has become a focal point of technology-extended medicine, where master–slave type control over large distances poses significant challenges. Innovative solutions are required to deal with the modeling human teleoperation and varying communication quality parameters. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility a more straight-forward, classical control solution based on Kessler's Extended Symmetrical Method, formulated in a cascade control approach to tackle the problems caused by latency and uncertainties in a modeled telesurgical robot system.

This paper presents the implementation of synchronized multimedia streaming for the Apple iPhone platform. The idea is to stream multimedia content from a single source to multiple receivers with direct or multi-hop connections to the source. First we look into existing solutions for video streaming on the iPhone for point-to-point architectures. After acknowledging their limitations, we propose a solution based on network coding to efficiently and reliably deliver the multimedia content to many devices in a synchronized manner. Then we introduce an application that implements this technique on the iPhone. We also present our testbed which consists of 16 iPod Touch devices to showcase the capabilities of our application.

Peer-to-peer based content sharing is considered as one of the most efficient and popular content distribution solution nowadays. However in such network it is common that parts of the content is not distributed to several peers yet, thus during the download we have to wait a lot for that rare pieces. In addition to that it is also possible that we will not be able to download the rare pieces because the original seeder has already left the network. In this paper we investigate how to increase download efficiency in BitTorrent, in case of rare pieces by using network coding methods. In mobile networks the peer connections are not so reliable, because the phones as peers can leave the network any time e.g. if the network coverage is weak. Bringing BitTorrent technology to mobile phones has already been demonstrated with the implementation of SymTorrent and MobTorrent. In this research we investigate how to extend these implementations with network coding, to increase efficiency in case of rare pieces.

This paper compares the energy and time needed to convey one information unit from source to destination using multi hop networks versus overlay networks. For a set of realistic parameters the paper will show that multi hopping with more than 50 relays will need more time than the overlay network and with respect of energy the usage of more than 6 relays is using more energy than the overlay network. Cognitive infocommunication channels are abstract channels which use sensory substitution to convey structured perceptual information via any number of sensory modalities. Our goal is to develop engineering systems for the remote teleoperation of robots using sensory substitution to convey feedback information in meaningful ways. Such applications could help reduce the cognitive load for the user on the one hand, and help alleviate the effect of control instabilities and hidden parameters on the other. In this paper, we present a tensor algebraic approach for the compact representation of complete sensory substitution channels. Using HOSVD, we transform our representations into canonical, granular forms. Through a combination of rank-reduction and error compensation techniques, we propose an adaptive tuning model that can be used for iterative parameter space exploration, thus enabling users to explore the generated sensory substituted signals in a more intuitive fashion.

Due to its multidisciplinary origins, the elementary concepts and terminology of Cognitive Infocommunications (CogInfoCom) would ideally be derived - among others - from the fields of cognitive informatics, cognitive psychology, infocommunications and human-computer interaction. As the perspectives of these fields often differ considerably, a unified terminology may provide useful for research in CogInfoCom. In this paper, we propose a set of concepts which unify these various fields, as viewed from CogInfoCom. Two examples are given to illustrate how the terminology can be used to describe CogInfoCom systems.
