The paper describes a new sliding mode agent-based, decentralized architecture and control for parallel DC-DC converters, supplying low power consumers in the range of 0-250 W. The system provides increased flexibility with autonomic system reconstruction capability in the case of malfunction or fault, significantly increasing the reliability. The distributed intelligence facilitates the optimization of the converters' operation according to predefined criteria.

Social networks are becoming more and more popular nowadays. The increasing capabilities of mobile phones enable them to participate in such networks. The phonebooks in the mobile devices represent social relationships, that can be integrated in the social networks. Following we refer to this solution as phonebook-centric social networks. Such networks provide a synchronization mechanism between phonebooks of the users and the social network which allows detecting network members listed in the phonebooks (semi-) automatically. The detection of those members is based on the similarity of the personal data, e.g., similar name, same phone number, address, etc... Users can mark similarities between their phonebook contacts and members in the network. After this, if one of their contacts changes her or his personal detail, it will be propagated automatically into the phonebooks, after considering privacy settings. Synchronization time and energy consumption for synchronization on the mobiles and the scalability of the system strongly depend on the number of users and similarities. We have implemented a phonebook-centric social network, called Phonebookmark and investigated the structure of the network. We experienced that the distribution of similarities follows a power law, as well as the distribution of the in- and out-degrees in the social network. In this paper we propose a model for estimating the total number of similarities and we show that this estimation applies very well to the historical data of Phonebookmark.

This paper presents TP (Tensor Product) model type polytopic decomposition of the qLPV state space dynamic model of the proportional valve driven pneumatic cylinder with friction phenomena taken into account. First the qLPV model of the system is presented. Then the TP model transformation on the qLPV model is executed in order to obtain CNO (close to normal) convex form. This paper proves that the pneumatic model can exactly be represented by TP model type polytopic form with minimum 81 vertices.

We refer to channels of communication that link the user to information systems as cognitive communication channels. One especially interesting research topic related to cognitive communication channels deals with a special application called sensory substitution, when information is conveyed through a channel other than the one that is normally used for the given application. Our goal is to develop engineering systems for the remote teleoperation of robots using sensory substitution to convey feedback information in meaningful ways. Such applications could help reduce the cognitive load for the user on the one hand, and help alleviate the effect of control instabilities and hidden parameters on the other. A large part of our research deals with how to provide information on tactile percepts - otherwise inaccessible to the remote user - through sound. In this paper, we present one possible mapping between tactile percepts and auditory parameters. Through a set of controlled experiments, we show that the parameters used are meaningful and the sounds can at some level be learned by users as a substitute for tactile perception. Analyzing the error statistics of the experiments, we argue that it would be worthwhile to create a system in which the sound parameters could be locally tuned to enhance performance on a user-per-user basis. To this end, we convert the analytical descriptions of our sounds into an higher-order singular value decomposition (HOSVD) based tensor product model form. In order to be able to apply a wide range of mathematical analysis tools - such as principal component analysis and user performance-oriented adaptivity - we demonstrate that it is possible to convert our models into such canonical forms.

In this paper, we present a tensor algebraic approach for the compact representation of complete sensory substitution channels. Using HOSVD, we transform our representations into canonical, orthogonal forms. Through a combination of rank-reduction and error compensation techniques, we propose an iterative and hierarchical parameter space exploration method which may help users tune the generated sensory substituted signals in a more intuitive fashion. As an application example, we present a mapping between tactile percepts and auditory parameters in order to convey the tactile experience of a robot to a remote user through sound. In order to be able to apply a wide a wide range of mathematical analysis tools - such as principal component analysis and user performance-oriented adaptivity - we demonstrate that it is possible to convert our models into HOSVD-based canonical forms. The verification of the enhanced parameter space exploration method using rank reduction and error compensation in this application remains part of our future work.

The main contribution of this paper is a new sliding mode design for nonlinear systems. This method is based on Tensor Product Model Transformation. It is partially extension and combination of the classical optimal manifold design for linear (or linearized) system and sector sliding mode control. This new approach enables a systematic design and decomposition of optimal sliding sector by the High Order Singular Value Decomposition (HOSVD)-based canonical description of a wide class of nonlinear systems. Two design examples and experimental results of a DSP-controlled single-degree-of-freedom motion-control system are presented.

We investigate different schemes for data dissemination in multi-hop ad-hoc networks using network coding. We study the performance of these schemes in terms of the completion time when a set of data packets must be disseminated from a single source to all nodes in a multi-hop network, i.e. a network where at least one node is several hops away from the source. Therefore some network nodes must relay information to other nodes that are farther away from the source. In this setting, a relay node does not send a particular data packet, but a linear combination of the packets that it has previously received. The selection of such relays has a significant impact on performance. We present a graphical simulator based on OpenGL that allows to study performance and illustrate the status of network nodes in real time during the dissemination of an image file. Features of real-life ad-hoc networks such as packet losses and collisions are taken into consideration in our simulator. Numerical results are presented for simple linear meshed networks and for arbitrary topologies. Results indicate that schemes promoting parallel non-interfering transmissions complete the dissemination process faster.

This paper deals with the topic of qLPV state-space model based control design in which LMIs are used to optimize the multi-objective control performance. In this paper we investigate how the convex hull of the polytopic model influences the control performance of the LMI based control design. We examine these influences through the controller and observer design of the two dimensional aeroelastic wing's example. First we define various TP type polytopic model representations of a wing section whose vertices define different convex hulls. In the second step we investigate how these models change the control performance.

This paper presents some examples for fuzzy communication and intention guessing from the real life to the cooperation of intelligent mobile robots. In a special experimental environment a new communication approach is investigated for intelligent cooperation of autonomous mobile robots. Effective, fast and compact communication is one of the most important cornerstones of a high-end cooperating system. In this paper we propose a fuzzy communication system where the codebooks are built up by fuzzy signatures. We use cooperating autonomous mobile robots to solve some logistic problems. © 2010 IEEE.

A novel aspect of human-robot interaction (HRI) can be put on the basis, that the robot side is implemented on a state-machine (fuzzy automaton), which reacts the human intervention as a function of the robot state and the human action. This platform is suitable for implementing quite complicated action-reaction sequences, like the interaction of human and an animal, e.g. a behaviour of an animal companion to the human. According to this paradigm the robot can follow the existing biological examples and form inter-species interaction. The 20,000 year old human-dog relationship is a good example for this paradigm of the HRI, as interaction of different species. In this paper, for ethologically inspired HRI model implementation, a fuzzy model structure built upon the framework of low computational demand fuzzy rule interpolation (FRI) methods and fuzzy automaton is suggested. For demonstrating the applicability of the proposed structure, some components of a human-dog interaction FRI model, which also suitable for HRI, will be briefly introduced in this paper.
