The Rubik's cube is a very successful puzzle toy, having many methods to solve. Still, the process of learning to solve the cube is not simple and it involves a lot of attention and patience, so a beginner may give up very quickly. The paper presents an automatic solution to solve a real Rubik's cube based on an Arduino MEGA 2560 R3 development board and six stepper motors, one for each face of the cube. The algorithms that control the motors were implemented in Arduino IDE and the sequential algorithm to solve the puzzle was implemented in C#. The user interface allows the user to learn how to solve the cube and, also, to manually apply what they learned. The solution can be seen virtually on the interface and also on a real cube. The purpose of the system is to ease the learning process and not to obtain the fastest solution.

The aim of this paper is to present an alternative method of converter modeling. This method is based on the classical state-space modeling method and it consists of using certain simplifications throughout the modeling process which are based on the configuration in which the converter is to be used within the energy conversion system or microgrid. This method was designed with the purpose of simplifying the conventional process of obtaining a linear model through state-space modeling. The reason for it was the fact that most converter state-space models are nonlinear and require linearization around an operating point in order to be used for control structure design. The method presented in this paper is more likely to provide a linear model than the classical method. © 2022 IEEE.

This paper explains in detail the development, validation and simulation of a standard PI controller that can boost the WECS (Wind energy conversion system) power through two strategies. In the first strategy, the power is boosted by increasing the generator angular velocity through the direct increase of the angular velocity of the wind turbine rotor by slightly pitching the blades. In the second strategy, the power is boosted by increasing the load torque of the generator, through the direct increase of the load torque of the wind turbine rotor. For achieving this goal, the following tasks have been accomplished: a wind energy conversion system nonlinear mathematical model has been developed, a gain scheduled proportional-integral (PI) controller as the baseline controller, and two gain scheduled proportional-integral (PI) power-boosting controllers for the two power-boosting strategies. For the power-boosting controllers, it is also presented a logic that switches between baseline and power booster controllers when certain wind speeds conditions are met. The response, stability, performance and the increase in the shaft torsion, tower and blades bending moments of the gain scheduled PI power-boosting controllers have been compared with the baseline controller. By comparing the output power response of the controllers, it can be seen that the power booster controllers boost the power when the defined conditions are met. Finally, for boosting the power of a WECS in certain conditions the most efficient way is by increasing the generator load torque, because this strategy increases the least the loading of the main components of a WECS. This power boosting strategy implementation it might require the change (or reinforcement) of the drive train shaft, if it cannot take the extra loading created by power boosting controller. © 2022 IEEE.

Innovative technologies used to increase human comfort based on concepts such as smart home, home automation, Internet of Things are already an increasingly widespread reality in modern homes. This paper presents an experimental stand for testing and validating smart home solutions, which aims to implement functionalities such as monitoring and controlling environmental data (temperature, humidity and air quality), home access control (electromagnetic door lock, servo motors and actuators control, secure access based on radio frequency identification), user-centered display interfaces, alarms/notifications system, all these for the benefit of human comfort. An important feature of the implemented automation system (based on an Arduino UNO R4 Wi-Fi board) is the client-server architecture based on Wi-Fi communication, which allows remote monitoring and control of various devices and equipment within the smart home. The proposed monitoring and control solution was validated through a series of test scenarios designed and carried out on the implemented experimental stand, proving its adequate functioning in various conditions (according to the requirements), respectively its reliability.

Signature verification is a very common task in the field of document analysis used for the identification and validation of individuals. Many approaches can be used for signature classification. Using a machine-learning-based system is one of the most common approaches. This paper uses machine learning to classify signatures as genuine or forged. It also used a dynamic time-warping approach in the preprocessing step to produce data for training purposes. This approach differs from using it in the classification phase, which is a common practice in signature verification. The work targets online signatures, which are obtained using digital devices. Different databases were used to evaluate the accuracy of the verification systems, and four different algorithms were used for classification. The results are very promising. The minimum error rate achieved was 2.09% for the MCYT-100 dataset, 3.34% for the SVC2004 dataset, $\mathbf{1. 6 8 \%}$ for the SigComp’11-Chinese dataset, and $\mathbf{3. 6 8 \%}$ for the SigComp’11- Dutch dataset.

This paper presents a new global planning method for car-like robots to use in autonomous robotic exploration. The base of the method is a tree built by the exploration method to represent the environment for goal selection. Using the tree as the basis the global path can be constructed with very little computational cost. The method will then be augmented with the acknowledgment of loops in the environment. This way both the goal selection and path planning are able to manage loops, which leads to shorter paths between the initial and final configurations in a looped environment. The two methods are tested against the widely used HybridA ∗ method in a tree-structured and a looped environment. In the former, the tree-based planner outperforms the HybridA * planner by producing a smoother trajectory. In the latter, the loop-based planner achieves approximately the same performance, but with a lower computational cost.

The widespread of Internet of Things (IoT) has increased the need of accurate indoor localization methods. The indoor localization problem aims to determine the object position in technology-deficiated environments., where the solution requires the application of both alternative sensors and efficient algorithms. This paper addresses three fingerprinting techniques and provides a comparative analysis based on real measurements. Namely, the performance of Weighted K-Nearest Neighbor (WKNN), Random Forest (RF) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) fingerprinting approaches are evaluated. First, a database is generated of Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) values of five access points (APs) in laboratory environment. Then, heatmap-based fingerprinting is elaborated., and a comprehensive analysis is conducted in two important cases. In the first case all points are line of sight (LOS), while in the second case, the modules are covered by a column. The obtained results show that the ANN-based approach outperforms the WKNN and RF methods, thereby proving its efficient applicability in indoor localization problems. © 2022 IEEE.

Renewable energy generation is replacing conventional synchronous generators in electrical power systems around the world. A side effect of this trend is a reduction in system inertia and the power available for frequency control. In this study, the authors investigate an island power system of interest under different conditions with varying levels of demand side response penetration and analyze its impact on frequency behavior. The obtained simulation results are then complemented with a series of experiments carried out using a combination of real hardware and Power-Hardware-In-The-Loop equipment, to test the validity and limitations of the simulation results. In summary, demand side response can notably improve the frequency response of an island power system, but excessive demand side response leads to unacceptable frequency oscillations. © 2023 IEEE.

In the last years of this decade, the recognition of human activity has become important to a wide range of researchers in pattern recognition and human-computer interaction as a result of its wide range of real-world applications, such as gesture recognition, biometric user identification, surveillance by authorities, behavior analysis and health monitoring of the elderly. Human Activity Recognition (HAR) has become a significant topic in mobile and ubiquitous computing as a result of the widespread use of wearable sensor devices and the Internet of Things (loT). Deep Learning (DL) is one of the most commonly used problem-solving techniques in the HAR system. Nevertheless, there are major challenges in applying HAR to problems in recognizing various human activities. In this paper, presented and showed the activities of implementing a new combination of DL methods for multi-class user activity identification to HAR. Using DL methods can be extracting discriminative features automatically from raw sensor data. Specifically, in this work, we proposed a hybrid architecture that features a combination of Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BILSTM) networks and support vector Machines (SVM) for the HAR task. The UCI HAR dataset is used to test the model, it consists of accelerometer and gyroscope data obtained from smartphones. The dataset is split into 30 % for testing and 70% for training. The results for the (BILSTM-SVM) model, showed that the highest accuracy for all users was 98.74 %, higher than all previous models using the same dataset. © 2023 IEEE.

With the introduction of 5G networks, high-speed low-latency network connections became available for mobile and embedded devices without the limited range of WiFi networks. Although the source and the destination can now be hundreds of kilometres away, the communication between them can be flawless. Our goal is to have a low cost, low power, lightweight device that is able to stream video for UAV (unmanned aerial vehicles), mobile robot teleoperation over 5G networks to AR/VR (augmented/virtual reality) applications, to large distances without the need for line of sight. In this paper we compare the latency of existing low cost video streamer solutions (UAV camera streaming, single board computer) and present a custom hardware-software solution optimized for low latency, while conducting measurements over different network types (wired, campus 5G, public 5G). We have shown that the custom device was able to achieve with significantly lower latency (50–80 ms direct over direct connection, about 100–150 ms over public 5G).
