The fault diagnosis is important in continuously monitoring the performance and quality of manufacturing processes. Overcoming the drawbacks of threshold approach, artificial neural network may extract the symptom of the faults through learning from the samples, but it is difficult to design its structure. Moreover, it needs a large numbers of samples in practice. In this paper, support vector machine approach was proposed to overcome these limitations based on statistics learning theory, and a new fault diagnosis system is developed. The experimental results showed that it is an efficient and practical on-line intelligent monitoring system for the stamping processes.

Surgical training systems based on virtual reality (VR) and simulation techniques offer a cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional training methods. This paper describes a virtual reality system for training arthroscopic knee surgery. The virtual model used in this system is constructed from the Visual Human Project dataset. The system simulates the real-time deformation of soft tissue with topological change using finite element analysis. To offer the realistic tactile feedback, we construct a specialized force feedback hardware.

Current dual-stage actuator design uses withut pssiv daming. piezoelectric patches only In this paper, we propose a dual-stage servo system using enhanced active-passive hybrid piezoelectric actuators. The proposed configuration will improve the existing dual-stage actuators for higher precision and shock resistance, due to the incorporation of passive damping in the design. Finite element analyses of different types of piezoelectric actuators in a disk arm assembly under shock impulse are reported. In the shock test, a 175 g and 1 ms sinusoid acceleration pulse is applied at one end of the base and other end of the base is fixed. The shock responses of the disk arm assembly with different configurations of the piezoelectric actuators are simulated and compared. In the finite element analysis, the viscoelastic damping layers in the hybrid actuators are modeled with the Prony series, which parameters are determined from dynamic frequency data of nomograph.

Manufacturing system is becoming larger and more complicated. Global manufacturing chains have become common in the new millennium. Internet and intranet integrate the advanced manufacturing system. To perform remote monitoring and diagnosis in such chains and systems, real-time data compression has become a core factor in the efficient and effective exchange of information exchange via computer networks. This paper presents a new technique for compressing data using a kernel-based method. Overcoming the drawbacks of support vector techniques — that is, fast decompression but slow compression — the new method exhibits high speed in both phases. In addition, the new method can also be applied for pattern classification. Based on strain signal example tests derived from sheet metal stamping operations, the new method is very effective. The proposed technology has enormous potential in the application of advanced manufacturing system monitoring and control through internet or intranet.
