Looking at the Smart Grid as a Cyber - Physical system of great complexity, the paper synthesizes the main IT security issues that may arise. This paper investigates the bipartite coordinated tracking control problem in the task-space of heterogeneous networked Euler-Lagrange systems in the fixed-time framework. A new neural network-based fixed-time hierarchical control approach is developed mainly under the directed graphs. Specifically, a distributed observer is firstly designed to estimate the desired position and velocity of the system in the fixed-time framework, and the neural network-based controller is proposed on this basis. The effect of system uncertainty is effectively mitigated and the chattering phenomenon is overcome, thus solving the bipartite coordinated tracking control problem of heterogeneous networked Euler-Lagrange systems at the control layer. In addition, the error can be kept within a small convergence region as derived by the fixed-time stability theory. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed control scheme is fully verified by numerical simulation.

The European eSafety initiative aims to improve the safety and efficiency of road transport. The main element of eSafety is the pan-European eCall project—an in-vehicle system which idea is to inform about road collisions or serious accidents. As estimated by the European Commission, the implemented system will reduce services’ response time by 40%. This will save 2,500 people a year. In 2015, the European Parliament adopted the legislation that from the end of March 2018 all new cars from the EU should be equipped with the eCall system. The limitation of this idea is that only small part of cars driven in UE are brand new (about 3.7% brand new cars were sold in 2015). This paper presents the first concept of an onboard eCall device which can be installed at the owners’ request in used vehicles. The proposed system will be able to detect a road accident, indicate the number of vehicle’s occupants, report their vital functions, and send that information to dedicated emergency services via duplex communication channel. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2019.

The paper is aimed atto a study of a possibility to use PCM (Phase Change Materials) to increase the thermal storage properties of buildings. For this purpose, both the experimental testing and computer modelling were performed. The PCM DuPont Energain panel was used for the study of its thermal technical parameters under laboratory conditions. Laboratory testing of the effect of PCM surface treatment showed a double increase in the heat transfer coefficient, but also a decrease of 17 % in the time constant under given conditions. The computer modelling was used for the study of the influence of walls sheathing on the temperature comfort inside the tested room of the wooden house by its passive cooling in summer. Results of the numerical simulations proved influence of the PCM covering. But in the presented model, the PCM covering caused only a slight improvement in the thermal comfort inside the room. © 2019 The Authors, published by EDP Sciences.

Model-driven software engineering methodologies like model-driven engineering aim to improve the productivity of software development by using graph-based models as the main artifacts during development, and generating the source code from these models. The models are usually displayed and edited using a graphical notation. However, they can also be described using a textual notation. This has some advantages and disadvantages compared to the graphical approach. For example, while editing the model, we can better focus on the details instead of a broad overview. Similarly to source code, models evolve rapidly during development. Handling and managing the evolution of models is an important task in model-driven methodologies and is an active research area today. However, there exist few research on text-based modeling approaches, compared to graph-based ones. This paper introduces the text-based modeling research field based on existing literature, and presents the state-of-the-art of the field related to model evolution and management. Our goal is to identify challenges and directions for future research in this field. The main topics covered are model differencing and merging, and the synchronization of the textual and graphical notations. © 2018 Budapest University of Technology and Economics. This paper presents a concept for an integrated process chain for tooling production based on metal additive manufacturing. The proposed approach aims at taking advantage of a fully digitized production line, describing the main steps for the synergetic integration of the manufacturing assets. The production line entails digital infrastructure that collects and elaborate data from various monitoring sensors to execute corrective actions and continuously optimize the process. This line will bring breakthrough benefits, like flexibility and full traceability. Also challenges, as change management in the industry, skills gap, the requirement of new business models and product re-design have been addressed.

Background: Decades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011, well before the COVID-19 pandemic, for reasons which remain disputed. We aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: We used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth, causes of death, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011, 2011–19, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy. Findings: All countries showed mean annual improvements in life expectancy in both 1990–2011 (overall mean 0·23 years [95% uncertainty interval [UI] 0·23 to 0·24]) and 2011–19 (overall mean 0·15 years [0·13 to 0·16]). The rate of improvement was lower in 2011–19 than in 1990–2011 in all countries except for Norway, where the mean annual increase in life expectancy rose from 0·21 years (95% UI 0·20 to 0·22) in 1990–2011 to 0·23 years (0·21 to 0·26) in 2011–19 (difference of 0·03 years). In other countries, the difference in mean annual improvement between these periods ranged from –0·01 years in Iceland (0·19 years [95% UI 0·16 to 0·21] vs 0·18 years [0·09 to 0·26]), to –0·18 years in England (0·25 years [0·24 to 0·25] vs 0·07 years [0·06 to 0·08]). The real-time implementation of control and estimation algorithms on microcontrollers with limited memory and computational power requires a model that describes the dynamics of the vibrating system in sufficient detail, yet makes real-time deployment on sampled systems feasible. While extracting a model from finite element analysis is always possible, this approach yields models that are too complex to be evaluated in sample timing that is typical for vibration phenomena. In case of nonlinear vibrations, this is even more critical as state-of-the-art optimal control and estimation algorithms will have to evaluate a non-convex objective function. This paper introduces the modeling and system identification procedure of a nonlinear vibrating beam that results a real-time feasible mathematical model. Position and velocity measurements are made on a slender vibrating beam mounted equipped with a tip mass on a linear excitation stage using non-contact laser Doppler vibrometry. The measurement results are then fitted to two model candidates by using genetic algorithms to identify unknown parameters. We demonstrate from a theoretical point of view that the OR and NOR logic gates can be implemented with the application of well-arranged, existing fluorescent photoswitchable proteins, driven by well-designed photon pulses. The building blocks of the proposed molecular architectures are the Dronpa, Padron and mTFP0.7 proteins. The experimental realizability is also discussed in this work. © Springer International Publishing AG 2018.

Background: Systems Medicine is a novel approach to medicine, that is, an interdisciplinary field that considers the human body as a system, composed of multiple parts and of complex relationships at multiple levels, and further integrated into an environment. Exploring Systems Medicine implies understanding and combining concepts coming from diametral different fields, including medicine, biology, statistics, modeling and simulation, and data science. Such heterogeneity leads to semantic issues, which may slow down implementation and fruitful interaction between these highly diverse fields. Methods: In this review, we collect and explain more than100 terms related to Systems Medicine. These include both modeling and data science terms and basic systems medicine terms, along with some synthetic definitions, examples of applications, and lists of relevant references.
