An experimental comparison of two common parameter identification schemes is presented. The recursive least-squares method and the extended Kalman filter are applied to identify three parameters of a second-order linear mass-spring-damper model, using data obtained from a nanopositioning stage with a highly resonant dynamic response.

Nowadays in solving adaptive control problems Lyapunov's second method is generally involved. Although, the method is ingenious and very popular, recently alternative solutions have appeared which in many cases prove to be more advantageous and also effective. One of these methods is the family of Robust Fixed Point Transformations (RFPT) which can be used in several areas successfully. In this paper a novel variant of RFPT is introduced which reduces the range of the main function by half while keeps the result as effective as before. This statement is illustrated via simulations where two coupled Fitz-Hugh-Nagumo neurons are synchronized by the modified system. © 2011 IEEE.

The paper presents the spectral decomposition of the elasticity matrix for a homogeneous and isotropic material and for a material having transversal isotropy. A bar made of a composite material (epoxy resin longitudinally reinforced with long glass fibers), is assumed as being transverse isotropic. Both its constituents are homogeneous and isotropic materials. The paper presents the calculus of the eigenvalues corresponding to the elasticity matrix of the composite bar as a whole. The paper also presents how these eigenvalues do vary, depending on the reinforcing constituent volume ratio.

Telesurgery means the remote application of interventional medical techniques; a concept that is currently widely practiced around the world for short distance through master-slave robot systems. The concept has the potential to service long distance telesurgery as well. However, this requires the effective handling of communication latency. The current paper suggests a fuzzy control solution for telesurgical applications aiming at the alleviation of the disturbing effects of large latencies with the concept of remote surgical robotics. The fuzzy control solution is supported by a cascade control system structure with two proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers in the inner and outer control loops and designed by Kessler's Extended Symmetrical Optimum empirical criteria. The PID controller in the outer loop is next replaced by Takagi-Sugeno-Kong PID-fuzzy controllers which combine several separately designed PID controllers. The combination of separately designed PID controllers and the modal equivalence principle are expressed as a design and tuning method of the Tagaki-Sugeno-Kong PID-fuzzy controllers.

This paper gives aspects related to a cooperation scenario in the framework of multiagent systems. The presentation is focused on a trivial multiagent system that consists of two agents, the Master and the Apprentice. The theoretical basis of the cooperation scenario is the definition of the most probable process, and two algorithms are used with this regard. The formulation of the cooperation scenario is exemplified for a case study that builds an architecture of successively placed bricks in the workspace.

“Learning to see” is the message of the powerful Value Stream Mapping (VSM) technique, which was developed within the lean production paradigm to help practitioners redesign production systems, eliminate waste and create continuous flow manufacturing in a high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environment. It was originally developed mainly for disconnected flow lines of the automotive industry. In this contribution, both the adaption of this method to the characteristics of semiconductor manufacturing and its application in a Wafertest environment at Infineon Technologies, an important frontend site for microcontroller manufacturing, are shown. The article provides guidelines on how to implement continuous flow manufacturing into typical semiconductor production areas. The advantages of this production principle, as well as the special expenditures during the implementation, are demonstrated.

This paper suggests a new stability analysis theorem dedicated to a class of fuzzy logic control systems. The fuzzy logic control systems consist of nonlinear Single Input-Single Output (SISO) discrete-time processes controlled by Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy logic controllers. The stability analysis is conducted on the basis of Lyapunov's direct method with quadratic Lyapunov function candidates. The theorem proves that if the derivative of the Lyapunov function candidate is negative definite in the active region of each fuzzy rule then the fuzzy logic control system will be asymptotically stable in the sense of Lyapunov. Sufficient stability conditions are offered. An example related to the design of a stable fuzzy logic control system for the discrete-time Lorenz chaotic system and simulation results are included. © 2011 IFAC.
