engineering for development, production, and other product related company activities are being organized in virtual systems for lifecycle management of product data. This new age of engineering is a result of the continuous development for step-by-step moving of product design, analysis and other production engineering activities from conventional environments to modeling environments during the eighties and nineties. However, more developments were needed in knowledge based decision assistance in order to realize modeling of human intent, increasingly complex product structures, and efficient communication of product data. In recent years, a great change of engineering methodology and software produced program products in knowledge technology and advanced local and global communication. Group work of engineers is increasingly organized around special portals for engineering on the Internet. Although intensive research activities produced outstanding methods in knowledge-based solutions for engineering, these methods have not widespread in the industrial modeling practice. This paper attempts to evaluate the possibility that recent communication and knowledge intensive engineering modeling can be developed into communication and knowledge intensive virtual space technology. Paper starts with a discussion on integrated application of different groups of product modeling techniques. Following this, methods are evaluated for the management of product data (PDM). Next section emphasizes aspects, contexts, and intents as primary issues in modeling for relationships in product data and decisions by engineers. Finally, methods for the management of engineering activities for lifecycle of products are summarized, considering communities of engineers around Internet portals.

This paper presents a novel approach for off-line signature verification. First the different aspects and problems of signature verification are discussed in conjunction with off-line analysis methods. It is shown, that on-line analysis methods perform usually better than off-line methods because they can make use of the temporal information (and thereby get a better perception of the semantics of the signature). An assumption is made, that off-line verification methods have difficulties improving their results because of the high level of abstraction they use, which is a direct consequence of the missing semantics. Afterwards a solution is presented with the ability to preserve some semantic information, and thereby deliver a better ability to analyze the results and optimize the system.

An attempt to connect finite automata theory with multi-agent systems is presented. The purpose is to obtain an accurate way to plan and control the robot activities within a multi-robot system. The proposed model is an adapted Moore machine, which is to be used with a contract net protocol agent coordination procedure. The considered architecture was tested in an educational flexible manufacturing system with two industrial robots.

The utilization of solar energy can be made by photovoltaic (PV) cells to generate electric power directly and solar thermal (T) panels can be applied to generate heat power. When the utilization of the solar energy is necessary to generate electric power, the option of using T panels in combination with some heat/electric power conversion technology can be a viable solution. The power generated by utilizing the solar energy absorbed by a given area of solar panel can be increased if the two technologies, PV and T cells, are combined in such a way that the resulting unit will be capable of co-generation of heat and electric power. In the present paper combined Photovoltaic/Thermal panels are suggested to generate heat power to produce hot water, while the photovoltaic part is used to obtain electric power mainly for covering the electric power consumption of the system, to supply the electronic control units and to operate pump drives etc. Ac and dc supplies are provided by converters for covering self-consumption and possibly the need of some household appliances. The development and design of the system is made by extensive use of modeling and simulation techniques. In the paper a part of the simulation studies, carried out to determine the energy balance in the electric energy conversion section of the system and the control structure, assuming stand-alone operation is presented.

Fuzzy model identification of a system can be performed either by subjective or objective methods. Subjective methods assume the describing of system operation in statements of type If...Then... and their summarization in a fuzzy relation. The objective methods are performed in an experimental approach. The second class is a common one and assumes fuzzy model identification without an expert. This presumes an estimation algorithm for the fuzzy relation of a system based on an input-output data set. The paper presents an approach for identification of fuzzy relation based on square prediction error minimization and the results achieved through simulation on the Box-Jenkins data set

A control scheme for highway tunnels is proposed based on a static model of the highway tunnel. The controller is designed to keep the exhaust levels inside the tunnel below given limits. The controller is derived in two stages. First, a controller for an isolated ventilation section is found. Then a controller for a complex tunnel is obtained and the control is optimized by means of linear programming. The control is then simulated on a dynamical model of a highway tunnel.

A new approach is proposed in the paper for unknown glucose inlet estimation in case of diabetic patients under insensitive care in form of a linear parameter varying (LPV) model class. The nonlinear two compartment glucose-insulin system is rewritten in affine parameter varying form in order to handle the dynamics with LPV fault detection and isolation (FDI) method. The aim of the closed-loop fault detection, on the one hand, is to estimate the unknown disturbance input of the system, on the other hand to recognize the actuator fault. A parameter varying controller assures the performance requirements and stability of the system

A detailed simulation has been proposed and implemented for a complex road tunnel to be constructed in Prague, Czech Republic. The work brings new approach to functional and spatial decomposition of traffic, ventilation and exhaust tunnel subsystems allowing a simulation of dynamics. The discretization method provides a highly realistic and detailed behavior of the tunnel system. In addition, simulation of emergency situations is available. The simulation has been implemented in MATLAB.
