Input and state constrained inverse optimal control with application to power networks

We study input and state constrained inverse optimal control problems starting from a stabilizing controller with a control Lyapunov function, where the goal is to make the controller an explicit solution of the resulting constrained optimal control problem. For an appropriate cost design and initial states for which a sublevel set of the Lyapunov function is contained in the state constraint set and the initial input lies on an ellipsoid inside the input constraint set, we show that the stabilizing controller solves the constrained optimal control problem. Compared to the state-of-the-art, we avoid solving nonlinear optimization problems evaluated pointwise, i.e., for every state, or in a repetitive fashion, i.e., at each time step. We apply our theoretical results to study the angular droop control studied in (Jouini et al., 2022) of an inverter-based power network. For this, we accommodate the constraints on the angle and power generation and exemplify our approach through a two-inverter case study.

Blood pressure is one of the most vital signals characterizing the health status of the human body. Based on this physiological data, many current and future diseases can be detected. Therefore, having a device that can continuously measure blood pressure without a cuff or medical intervention would be highly beneficial. This study aims to investigate non-invasive blood pressure measurement with the help of a low-power microcontroller, namely STM32F446RE. These measuring methods are based on deep neural networks and utilize externally measured photoplethysmography (PPG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) signals. The performance of the proposed models is compared to similar solutions from the literature and inspected for memory usage and runtime. The results of this work show that a convolutional layer-based model can be used for proper blood pressure estimation in such an energy-efficient device.

This paper presents an experimental study that compares the performance of four selected metaheuristic algorithms for optimizing a time delay system model. Time delay system models are complex and challenging to optimize due to their inherent characteristics, such as non-linearity, multi-modality, and constraints. The study includes an explanation of the choice and core functionality of the selected algorithms, which are both baseline and state-of-the-art variants of self-organizing migrating algorithm (SOMA), state-of-the-art variant from the Success-History-based Adaptive Differential Evolution family of algorithms, with emphasis on diverse search (DISH algorithm), and Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES) algorithm. The hyperparameters of the metaheuristic algorithms were set using the iRace automatic algorithm configuration framework. The paper emphasizes the importance of metaheuristic algorithms in control engineering for time-delay systems to develop more effective and efficient control strategies and precise model identifications. The experimental results highlight the effectiveness of the state-of-the-art algorithms with specific adaptive mechanisms like population organization process, diverse search and adaptation mechanisms ensuring a gradual transition from exploration to exploitation. Overall, this study contributes to understanding the challenges and advantages of using metaheuristic algorithms in control engineering for time delay systems. The results provide valuable insights into the performance of modern metaheuristic algorithms and can help guide the selection of appropriate adaptive mechanisms of metaheuristics.

Induction heating is widely used in industrial furnaces because of its rapid response time and high energy efficiency. To design and optimize these furnaces, computer-aided simulations are essential. This study aims to develop an accurate temperature field model for a square cross-section steel billet in an induction furnace by leveraging various parameters in COMSOL Multiphysics software. The simulation analysis incorporated temperature dynamics, considering skin depth, temperaturedependent, and constant parameters of the steel billet. The datadriven model was converted into a state-space representation utilizing MATLAB's System Identification Toolbox. This conversion facilitated the design of a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) with integral gain and pole placement. Further, these controllers' performance was analyzed, and controllers were successfully implemented to regulate the temperature field of the billet from initial temperature to reference temperature, utilizing the distributed parameter system control circuit.

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of power electronics is becoming increasingly challenging to manage. This is due, on the one hand, to the advancements in power electronics technology such as the spread of resonant converters, and on the other hand to the tightening EMC requirements. One of the most commonly used EMC measures in power electronics, and in particular isolated DC/DC converters, is adding a primary-secondary Y-capacitor to reduce common-mode (CM) electromagnetic interference (EMI). To provide a deeper understanding on how the Y-capacitor achieves this, CM impedance measurements on an isolated half-bridge LLC resonant DC/DC converter are presented in this paper. From the results, the reason behind the EMI mitigation effect of Y-capacitor can be observed which gives a more precise explanation on the underlying noise suppression mechanism and opens up an optimization opportunity for the technique.

The first course of control is under a critical review. Both the teaching material covered and the teaching methods require new considerations. Introducing interactivity in the education process makes the learning more successful and enjoyable. MATLAB provides an effective environment for learning and applying different disciplines. control101 is a new MATLAB toolbox under development which provides tools for interactive learning of control disciplines. This paper presents the framework for teaching discrete control algorithms applied for processes containing large dead times.

Several solutions have been proposed for vehicle navigation in unknown environments to ensure safer driving by avoiding obstacles and collisions. In this work, an electric vehicle equipped with Mecanum 4 omnidirectional holonomic wheels, analog joystick to control driving movement, LiDAR sensors and Wi-Fi able to detect obstacles is investigated based on neural network approach. By experimental tests conducted to avoid collisions by detecting the presence of obstacles, the relation between the resistance distance and speed is described by the artificial neural network. © 2023 IEEE.

Genetic algorithms for NP-complete problems are widespread since it is easy to obtain a solution to the problem. However, its optimality gives the real issue and is not guaranteed to be achievable. In our research, we address a special subproblem of scheduling problems, the final exam scheduling, in which special requirements restrict the state space, which often contradicts each other. The task's difficulty is the massive size of the state space. Genetic algorithm-based solutions were considered since a MILP solver could not find a solution in a reasonable time. A model was built to solve this problem using the genetic algorithm. Most of the possibilities were seen in the different mutation procedures, so we investigated them in more detail. A question for genetic algorithms is what parameters and probabilities to run the model with since the more freedom we give to the run, the larger the runtime. Finding the threshold between the two is essential. Therefore, our experiments measured sizeable real data sets to find the optimal values for this complex problem. The resulting algorithm can significantly facilitate the lengthy manual scheduling processes carried out so far in our university.
