This paper presents the biomedical engineering activity, which is carried out at Budapest University of technology and Economics and its partner institutes. In the first part the main goals and the curriculum of the Biomedical engineering Education Program (BMEEP) is presented. Computer algebra has been used to solve nonlinear adjustment accompanied by simultaneous parameter estimation. The corresponding constrained minimization can be achieved by Groebner bases with lexicographic monomial order on the domain of rational numbers, employing Groebner Walk, when Buchberger algorithm failed. This method providing infinite precision is about minimum ten times faster than the traditional iterative numerical techniques with finite precision. In addition, computer algebra solution doesn't need initial approximation as the iterative methods do. The suggested technique is illustrated by a numerical example of solving the problem of 2D Helmert transformation. For the numeric and symbolic computations the Mathematica 6.01 system was employed.

This paper introduces the improvement of slip energy recovery drives with voltage source inverter for a speed control of wound rotor induction motors in order to reduce harmonics of input line current waveforms and improve its power factor. A boost chopper is used to connect the diode rectifier to DC link voltage, which is composed of a capacitor and voltage source inverter type space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM). This scheme leads to be able to adjust the speed of the motor by the duty cycle of the chopper. The PI cascade controller is also introduced to control a speed to be constant when the load varies. An overview of the experimental test bench that the results are presented is three-fold. The first is the harmonics of input line current waveforms are reduced, the second power factor of the drive with VSI are improved and the third presented for a design PI controller for control a speed, where step change loading and unloading transients.

The paper analyses power quality requirements for isolated systems. Standards used within this framework are taken from widely used classification societies rules, international standards applied to shore and off-shore units. The norms can be also divided into merchant and navy ships, both are analyzed. The requirements themselves are just a simple indication tool of the electric power quality. Hence, four real time examples are presented: 1) a navy ship with regular propeller, 2) an all electric ship with power network exceeded 1 MVA, 3) a passenger ship with 6.6 kV network and 4) equipment installed on shore, i.e. 120 kVA uninterruptible power supply system. For some of the presented examples standards are not fulfilled, which is discussed and some remarks are given.

In this paper a method to estimate the initial rotor position of the switched reluctance motor (SRM) at the stand still condition is proposed. The proposed method can be implemented by the simple microcontroller based system, and it is not necessary to know the magnetization curves. The impulse gate drive signal is applied and the winding current is detected and its approximate value is used for calculating the rotor position. The compensation method to reduce the estimation error thorough one cycle is also mentioned. The proposed method is implemented with the 6-stator-pole and 4- rotor-pole, 1.5 kW 3-phase switched reluctance motor.

This paper presents the design and the experimental validation of model predictive control (MPC) of a hybrid dynamical process based on measurements collected by a wireless sensor network. The proposed setup is the prototype of an industrial application in which a remote station controls the process via wireless network links. The experimental platform is a laboratory process consisting of four infrared lamps, controlled in pairs by two on/off switches, and of a transport belt, where moving parts equipped with wireless sensors are heated by the lamps. By approximating the stationary heat spatial distribution as a piecewise affine function of the position along the belt, the resulting plant model is a hybrid dynamical system. The control architecture is based on the reference governor approach: the process is actuated by a local controller, while a hybrid MPC algorithm running on a remote base station sends optimal belt velocity set-points and lamp on/off commands over a network link exploiting the information received through the wireless network. A discrete-time hybrid model of the process is used for the hybrid MPC algorithm and for the state estimator.

The switched reluctance motor (SRM) and drive system is a candidate in various applications including the home appliance. The simple and low cost system with an adequate performance is also one topic to be developed. A speed sensor directly increases the cost and it directly influences the reliability of the system. This paper proposes a simplified variable speed control system for the SRM without using an encoder. The method is not based on the exact rotor position estimation, only the turn off angle is determined from the simple relation between measured terminal voltage and current. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by the experimental result on the 3 kW 3-phase 6-stator-pole and 4-rotor-pole SRM.
