In this paper, to improve the system's performance for precise control of the developed pneumatic cylinder model, a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller is designed. The paper demonstrates that by using the obtained mathematical model and implementing the PID controller through the developed human-machine interface (HMI) in MATLAB, precise position control of the pneumatic actuator can be achieved, overcoming the challenges posed by the nonlinear behaviour of pneumatic actuators and leading to improved system performance in various industrial industrial applications. The PID model was optimized using both the Auto tuning and Ziegler-Nichols tuning methods, resulting in the best performance with response times of 0.534 seconds (Ts), 0.375 seconds (Tr), and an overshoot of 0.0799% (OS%). © 2023 IEEE.

This paper explores the impact of the burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) presence on distribution grid operations, highlighting the challenges they present to conventional pricing strategies due to their dual role as power consumers and suppliers, coupled with their energy storage capabilities. We propose an advanced real-time pricing model for the electricity market, employing a novel distributed bilevel optimization framework. This framework distinguishes between the distribution system operator (DSO) at the upper level and the EVs at the lower level, each aiming to optimize profit margins. The optimization includes power flow constraints at the upper level to ensure efficient operation within safe system limits, while model predictive control (MPC) is used to optimize lower-level EV responses. Additionally, we provide a rigorous convergence analysis of the proposed bilevel optimization method. Detailed convergence studies and simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed algorithm. © 2024 IEEE.

This study represents an important step to bring innovative teaching practices to schools. The study underlines the effects on increasing the students’ interest in STEM, self-efficacy and STEM career decisions with educational robotics activities. The implementation of robotics equipment in activities is not the only factor that influences the students’ STEM career decisions. Other factors are the didactical design in various settings or the use of different robotics equipment. The study evaluated data from app. 1500 students with questionnaires before and after the activities and identified the different effects on students’ STEM interest and their self-efficacy. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which prevented the implementation of on-site activities in schools for a longer period, also online workshops using simulations were carried out and evaluated. Besides, a specific case study was analyzed that applied an innovative hybrid setting with 23 students at a business school in Vienna, Austria. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Pickup vehicle scheduling in the steel logistics park is a critical issue in determining the outbound effciency of steel products. Steel products are distributed in the yards of the steel logistics park with mixed storage, and the optional yards for each pickup operation are not unique, which greatly increases the scheduling complexity. To overcome this challenge, in this paper, we propose a pickup vehicle scheduling problem with mixed steel storage (PVSP-MSS) to optimize makespan of pickup vehicle and makespan of steel logistics park simultaneously. The optimization problem is described as a multi-objective problem, and an enhanced Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm 2 (ESPEA) is proposed to solve the problem with high efficiency. Experiments are executed based on data collected from a real steel logistics park. The results confirm that ESPEA can significantly reduce both makespan of each pickup vehicle and makespan of steel logistics park. © 2023 IEEE.

Wood broken defects, such as cracks, penetrating dead knots and wanes, will seriously weaken the strength of the wood and destroy the structral integrity of the wood. Therefore, these defects should be inspected and then cut during the production. Although vision-based detection methods have been proposed to detect wood defect regions, they can not detect the defects that change in depth. To solve this problem, this paper focuses on the defect detection by measuring depth difference through 3D laser data. First, the 3D laser data is preprocessed to remove the noise. Secondly, we construct a support profile by multiple mean filtering at the line-level. Next, the residual components are obtained by subtracting the support profile from the profile data and the defect is determined by comparing the residual components and the setting threshold. Finally, we perform merging and filtering operation to determine the final position of defects. The experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2022 IEEE.

Deducing the twisting pattern of spreader is very important for crane operators in steel warehouse, since crane spreaders have to be rotated repeatedly at steel bar transport sites. To improve the efficiency of the steel bar delivery, the state prediction for crane spreaders is necessary. In order to fulfill this requirement, the HTSK-LN-ReLU model prediction method based on Optuna optimization is applied in this paper. We deploy the IMU on the spreader surface, and then obtain the state data during the operation of the crane spreader by wireless transmission. The data are first denoised through fourier filtering, and then the Optuna framework is used to optimize the HTSK-LN-ReLU model's hyperparameters. The evaluation index of mean square error is used for model evaluation, and finally the optimal hyperparameter combination of the model is selected from 200 comparison experiments. Experimental results demonstrate superior performance of the HTSK-LN-ReLU model in predicting the state of crane spreader for steel bar delivery. © 2023 IEEE.

High cost of environmental interaction and low data efficiency limit the development of reinforcement learning in robotic grasping. This paper proposes an end-to-end robotic grasping method based on offline reinforcement learning via sequence modeling. It considers the most recent n-step history to assist the agent in making decisions, where a predictive model learns to directly predict actions from raw image inputs. The experimental results show that our method can achieve higher grasping success rate with less training data than traditional reinforcement learning algorithms in offline setting. © 2023 IEEE.

The increased use of face masks for infection prevention has resulted in difficulties in speech understanding. Thus, there is a need for tuning of acoustic plans in hearing aids to compensate for the loss of acoustic information due to the *** studies focused on isolated vowel sounds. Our study measured the effect of surgery masks on the acoustic attributes of vowels and compared the effect of isolated to co-articulated vowels. The voices of 45 male speakers were recorded whilst pronouncing isolated vowels and vowels within the co-articulation in a sentence. All recordings were repeated with the participants wearing a surgical mask. Acoustic factors of length, intensity, pitch, formants, shimmer, and jitter were extracted from the vowels in all the different conditions. The differences between masked and unmasked acoustics in the co-articulated vowels were found to be smaller than the isolated vowels acoustic features. These preliminary results improve the quantification of the effect of hearing a face mask in the real-life production of speech. © 2024 The Author(s).

The efficient management of storage has become a critical determinant of operational efficiency due to the growing and diverse demand for steel logistics parks. However, the current storage methods consistently result in significant imbalances in the loading of steel products and operating times across multiple yards. To address this challenge, we propose optimizing the distribution of steel products based on demand levels and retrieval efficiency. Firstly, we present an optimization problem that employs demand-driven storage principles to formulate the scheduling of steel product storage. Then, we introduce a novel algorithm called the Adaptive Preferred Evolutionary Heuristic (APEH) to tackle this problem. The results from our experiments indicate that this model effectively enhances the storage structure, and the proposed algorithm consistently yields optimal solutions within a reasonable timeframe. © 2023 IEEE.
