Quantifying the average communication rate (ACR) of a networked event-triggered stochastic control system (NET-SCS) with deterministic thresholds is challenging due to the non-stationary nature of the system's stochastic processes. For a NET-SCS, the propagation of nonlinear statistics of the network communication status brought up by deterministic thresholds makes the precise computation of ACR difficult. Previous work used to over-simplify the computation using a Gaussian distribution without incorporating this nonlinearity, leading to sacrificed precision. This paper proposes a novel approach to calculate the exact ACR for a NET-SCS using a recursive model. We use theoretical analysis and a numerical study to qualitatively evaluate the deviation gap of the conventional approach that ignores the side information. The accuracy of our proposed method, alongside its comparison with the simplified results of the conventional approach, is validated by experimental studies. Our work is promising to benefit the efficient resource planning of networked control systems with limited communication resources by providing accurate ACR computation. © 2025 IEEE.

In this paper, we consider the problem of predicting unknown targets from data. We propose Online Residual Learning (ORL), a method that combines online adaptation with offline-trained predictions. At a lower level, we employ multiple offline predictions generated before or at the beginning of the prediction horizon. We augment every offline prediction by learning their respective residual error concerning the true target state online, using the recursive least squares algorithm. At a higher level, we treat the augmented lower-level predictors as experts, adopting the Prediction with Expert Advice framework. We utilize an adaptive softmax weighting scheme to form an aggregate prediction and provide guarantees for ORL in terms of regret. We employ ORL to boost performance in the setting of online pedestrian trajectory prediction. Based on data from the Stanford Drone Dataset, we show that ORL can demonstrate best-of-both-worlds performance.

Natural calamities like earthquake and tsunami wreak havoc on life of so many people and the infrastructure, thus saving people who are trapped in the affected region has been a very difficult task for rescuers. This work aims to develop a system which will ease this task for the rescuers by using behavior based multiple robots that will explore, map, localize, path plan and navigate in an unknown environment. Various incarnations of pre-existing meta-heuristic algorithms are used to develop a cost-effective solution in this work. A random walk exploration is used to explore the entire environment effectively which reduces the computational cost and time. To reduce the complexities of mapping, binary occupancy grid is used for the map layout, which is not as efficient as compared to its counterparts but better, where time is the crucial factor. To identify the efficient path to navigate from source to destination positions in the environment, Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm is used in this paper. The last and the most crucial step of the system is navigation towards the destination. By integrating INS and GPS algorithms, the robot can get an almost perfect algorithm for navigation which is not prone to errors. Autonomous robot exploration, mapping and navigation are achieved by integrating the proposed algorithms to work simultaneously. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms is analyzed through simulations in Webots virtual simulator environment, and the results are presented. Adapting the proposed exploration technique for swarm of robots is a prospective future research direction of this paper. © 2022 IEEE.

In recent years, reinforcement learning techniques have gained widespread application in control synthesis. However, in the context of safety-critical systems, employing trial-and-error based reinforcement learning may be unacceptable due to the potential risks it poses during the learning process. Consequently, the development of safe reinforcement learning techniques has become imperative. This paper addresses the challenge of safe reinforcement learning for controller synthesis, particularly when safety specifications are intricately linked to the real-time behavior of the system. To articulate time-sensitive requirements, we leverage Metric Interval Temporal Logic (MITL). To ensure safety throughout the learning process, we introduce an additional reactive controller called a shield. Specifically, the shield functions to reject any behavior that violates the real-time specifications, thus mitigating potential risks. The efficacy of our proposed approach is demonstrated through simulation results, highlighting its ability to satisfy safety constraints in the dynamic environment of controller synthesis.

This paper describes design and measurements of signal conditioner used for amplification of signals from accelerometers intended to use in human body surrogate for forensic crash testing. The design consists of instrumentation amplifier, Bessel low pass antialiasing filter and final gain stage. The characteristics of conditioner (frequency response, impulse response) are measured and compared with professional amplifier Endevco 136. Final testing of the conditioner together with sensor Endevco 7264H-2K is performed on the drop weight impact tester and the results are compared with Endevco 136, too.

This study addresses the formation control problem of under-actuated unmanned surface vehicle (USV) swarm systems and designs an obstacle avoidance strategy for navigating in obstacle environments. The intermittent communication scheme, consisting of the working period and the rest period, is introduced to reduce the communication burden and the consumption of control resources. A distributed formation control strategy is designed to guarantee the realization of the desired formation configuration. Considering the potential impact of obstacles in the operating environment, the artificial potential field repulsion obstacle avoidance method is embedded into the formation control strategy. To eliminate the impact of exogenous disturbances, a disturbance observer is established using the partially known disturbance information. Sufficient conditions are provided to ensure the uniformly ultimate boundedness of the formation error and disturbance observation error. In addition, an energy function related to the obstacle position information is designed to verify that the desired obstacle avoidance behavior can be achieved. The feasibility of theoretical analysis is validated by applying the developed control strategy to surface formation cruise missions. © 2013 IEEE.

Aiming at the problem that the traffic flow has an low prediction accuracy due to varying randomness and high nonlinearity, an improved TSK fuzzy neural network prediction model by singular spectrum analysis is ***, the original traffic flow time series can be decomposed into several subseries by singular spectrum analysis (SSA). Then, the Takagi-Sugeno-Kang (TSK) fuzzy system was trained using simulated annealing genetic algorithm (SAGA) and minibatch gradient descent method (MBGD) combined with three techniques (RDA) of regularization, DropRule and *** prediction model of TSK fuzzy neural network is established to predict each subseries independently, and the forecasted traffic flow is obtained by superimposing the prediction results of each subseries. Finally, the traffic flow dataset of expressway tunnels in a city is used to verify the effectiveness of the model. Experimental results can show high traffic flow prediction accuracy of the model, and the model can accurately predict multiple different highway tunnels.

Students behavior in the classroom has a close relation with the academic performance of students. With the widespread use of mobile phones, the students are easily distracted by mobile phones during the class. Therefore, analyzing the students behavior in the classroom becomes important to improve the quality of teaching. However, the existing methods for analyzing students behavior in the classroom, such as facial recognition, has low efficiency with large amounts of irrelevant data. And it also raises concerns about privacy and ethical issues. To solve this problem, in this paper, a novel mobile software called EasyClass has been developed to collect and quantify students behaviors. Based on the data collected by EasyClass, we propose to utilize user profiling to study students behavior in the classroom. The clustering algorithm is firstly employed to classify the data and generate semantically tags which describe students behavior in the classroom. Then a sequence and association rule analysis method is used to analyze the behavior tags and generated association rules. The results enable educators and non-expert users to gain a deeper understanding of students behavior in the classroom, and further improve the quality of the classroom teaching.

Automated wood defect detection is of great significance for improving wood utilization. However, the stains on the wood surface resemble defect features and it is difficult to distinguish the appearance of wane from defect-free regions. Relying solely on machine vision for extracting surface features of wood makes it difficult to achieve accurate defect detection. To address these challenges, we propose MMDNet, a multimodal detection network that combines point cloud and image data. By adaptively fusing point cloud and image features at multiple stages, the network effectively highlights wood surface defect regions. Additionally, we introduce an Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (ASPP) module into the network, which expands the network's receptive field and enables a comprehensive perception of the defects. Furthermore, we employ a deep supervision strategy to encourage the network to learn discriminative feature representations, enhancing the model's ability to differentiate defect regions. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of our method in detecting defects that are similar to the background and reducing interference from stains.

Novel Voltage Support Strategies for DGs in Hybrid ACDC Distribution Networks under Faults

According to the grid codes, the higher the voltage at the point of common coupling (PCC), the longer duration that the voltage-source converters (VSC) can stay connected to the grid. In hybrid ACDC distribution networks (HADNs), owing to the low capacity, VSC-based distributed generator (DG) closest to the fault point may fail to significantly support the voltage at the PCC through current injection. Therefore, other large-capacity converters such as flexible ACDC converters (FACs) should also inject currents to help it. However, in resistive-inductive HADNs, the voltage support effect is related to the current phases of converters, and the fault conditions. In this paper, circumstances under two fault position categories (upstream and downstream fault positions of DG) for double line-to-ground fault and three-phase short-circuit fault are analyzed. The interconnected sequence networks of HADNs under these two fault positions are proposed. Based on the proposed networks, the optimal current phase angles of DG and FAC for maximumly supporting voltages at the PCC of the DG are proposed. Moreover, the line sequence impedance calculation method is proposed. The simulation results verify the proposed strategy. The proposed strategy is suitable for low-capacity DGs in resistive-inductive HADNs to achieve voltage support and fault ride-through. © 2025 IEEE.
