More than 30 minutes before the earthquake event in Florina, Greece at 21:43:47(UTC) on 9th January 2022 an enhanced Eötvös torsion balance registered unidentified signals in the Jánossy Underground Research Laboratory in Budapest, Hungary. These signals were not visible on the seismograms, although seismic noises are continuously recorded by a side-by-side broadband seismometer. Moreover, seismological stations did not detect anything unusual, they presented a negative confirmation of the events. Our observation suggests that torsion-balances might effectively detect precursory earthquake signals from a considerable distance. Such a finding could trigger the development of new observational devices and networks and can provide novel knowledge about the origin and mechanism of earthquake phenomena. © 2022, CC BY.

A large number of robotic kits is commercially available for children education nowadays. Regarding the programming possibilities of these kits, they are usually divided into three categories: i) textual languages based kits, ii) digital blocks based kits and iii) tangible blocks based kits. In tangible blocks kits, the programming instructions are represented by physical - touchable - elements like blocks, cards or buttons. Since these are concrete objects, they are usually more playful and accessible for young children mainly in the concrete operational stage. Another relevant aspect in robotic kits is the possibility for children to follow the code execution at runtime. This process may be crucial for comprehending the programming process and for developing debugging abilities. In tangible programming based kits, this visual tracking is far more complex than in textual or digital blocks based kits since it typically requires the transmission of information between a lot of distinct physical pieces. The present work proposes and discusses the implementation of a digital electronic circuit with bluetooth communication designed for educational robotics kit and capable to provide a visual feedback. Results demonstrate that the proposed circuit is functional and feasible for embedding in robotic kits at a low cost.

There are many models of memristors, but there are no reports on exponential memristors. In this paper, a three- dimension memristor Rucklidge system with exponential memristor is proposed by introducing exponential function and constructing exponential memristor. The dynamic behavior of the system is analyzed by means of Lyapunov exponent and bifurcation diagram. The complex attractor coexistence and amplitude modulation characteristics of the system are found. The internal variable of memristor is introduced into the second two-dimensional equation as a feedback term, and a conditional symmetric system is constructed for the three-dimensional memristor system, which can realize the polarity control of output signal. By discussing the dynamic characteristics of exponential memristor chaotic system and the control mechanism of amplitude modulation, bias and conditional symmetry, the complex dynamic characteristics of exponential function memristor are revealed, which lays a foundation for its application in the field of secure communication.

The focus of this contribution is twofold. The first part aims at the rigorous and complete analysis of pole loci of a simple delayed model, the characteristic function of which is represented by a quasi-polynomial with a non-delay and a delay parameter. The derived spectrum constitutes an infinite set, making it a suitable and simple-enough representative of even high-order process dynamics. The second part intends to apply the simple infinite-dimensional model for relay-based parameter identification of a more complex model of a heating-cooling process with heat exchangers. Processes of this type and construction are widely used in industry. The identification procedure has two substantial steps. The first one adopts the simple model with a low computational effort using the saturated relay that provides a more accurate estimation than the standard on/off test. Then, this result is transformed to the estimation of the initial characteristic equation parameters of the complex infinite-dimensional heat-exchanger model using the exact dominant-pole-loci assignment. The benefit of this technique is that multiple model parameters can be estimated under a single relay test. The second step attempts to estimate the remaining model parameters by various numerical optimization techniques and also to enhance all model parameters via the Autotune Variation Plus relay experiment for comparison. Although the obtained unordinary time and frequency domain responses may yield satisfactory results for control tasks, the identified model parameters may not reflect the actual values of process physical quantities. © 2021, CC BY.

A new scheme for producing semidiscrete self-trapped vortices ("swirling photon droplets") in photonic crystals with competing quadratic (χ(2)) and self-defocusing cubic (χ(3)) nonlinearities is proposed. The photonic crystal is designed with a striped structure, in the form of spatially periodic modulation of the χ(2) susceptibility, which is imposed by the quasi-phase-matching technique. Unlike previous realizations of semidiscrete optical modes in composite media, built as combinations of continuous and arrayed discrete waveguides, the semidiscrete vortex "droplets" are produced here in the fully continuous medium. This work reveals that the system supports two types of semidiscrete vortex droplets, viz., onsite- and intersite-centered ones, which feature, respectively, odd and even numbers of stripes, N. Stability areas for the states with different values of N are identified in the system's parameter space. Some stability areas overlap with each other, giving rise to the multistability of states with different N. The coexisting states are mutually degenerate, featuring equal values of the Hamiltonian and propagation constant. An experimental scheme to realize the droplets is outlined, suggesting new possibilities for the long-distance transmission of nontrivial vortex beams in nonlinear media. © 2023, CC BY.

Convergence analysis of dual decomposition algorithm in distributed optimization: Asynchrony and inexactness

Dual decomposition is widely utilized in distributed optimization of multi-agent systems. In practice, the dual decomposition algorithm is desired to admit an asynchronous implementation due to imperfect communication, such as time delay and packet drop. In addition, computational errors also exist when individual agents solve their own subproblems. In this paper, we analyze the convergence of the dual decomposition algorithm in distributed optimization when both the asynchrony in communication and the inexactness in solving subproblems exist. We find that the interaction between asynchrony and inexactness slows down the convergence rate from O(1/k) to O(1/√k). Specifically, with a constant step size, the value of objective function converges to a neighborhood of the optimal value, and the solution converges to a neighborhood of the exact optimal solution. Moreover, the violation of the constraints diminishes in O(1/√k). Our result generalizes and unifies the existing ones that only consider either asynchrony or inexactness. Influence of aging atmosphere on the thermal stability of low-temperature sintered Cu joints based on Cu nanoparticles

Third-generation semiconductors are essential for high-temperature and high-power applications in power electronics. Sintered Cu nanoparticles present promising thermal and mechanical properties as interconnect materials in extreme environments. However, the effects of thermal aging under different atmospheric conditions on their performance require further investigation. This work investigates the shear strength, microstructural evolution, and thermal conductivity of sintered Cu joints aged at 250 °C and 500 °C in air, vacuum, and argon atmospheres. The results demonstrate that thermal aging improves shear strength by reducing porosity, with higher pressure sintering (20 MPa) leading to better densification and oxidation resistance. Oxidation is mainly confined to the interface due to the dense Cu structure, limiting oxygen diffusion and preventing internal degradation. However, prolonged aging time results in crack formation and propagation, particularly at 500 °C, where the growth of a Cu oxide layer at the joint-substrate interface degrades thermal conductivity. These findings emphasize the critical role of porosity control, aging temperature, and atmospheric conditions in enhancing the thermal stability and mechanical reliability of sintered Cu joints for high-temperature power electronics applications. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Carbon neutrality goals are driving the increased use of renewable energy (RE). Large-scale use of RE requires accurate energy generation forecasts; optimized power dispatch, which minimizes costs while satisfying operational constraints; effective system control to ensure a stable power supply; and electricity markets that support bidding and trading decisions associated with RE. However, the uncertainties in RE generation make renewable power systems challenging to operate. For example, the intermittent nature of wind power can make it difficult to balance the supply and demand of electricity in real time; therefore, traditional power sources could be needed to meet the demand, which can increase electricity prices. This Review outlines the potential of artificial intelligence-based methods for supporting renewable power system operation. We discuss the ability of machine learning, deep learning and reinforcement learning methods to facilitate power system forecasts, dispatch, control and markets to support the use of RE. We also emphasize the applicability of these techniques to different operational problems. Finally, we discuss potential trends in renewable power system development and approaches to address the associated operational challenges such as the increasingly distributed nature of RE installations, diversification of energy storage systems and growing market complexity.

In engineering applications, we often need the derivatives of functions defined by a program. The approach chosen for derivative computation must be algebraic to allow computer implementation. A particular solution to obtain first derivatives is the application of dual numbers. This paper proposes simple and compact generalizations of this idea to obtain derivatives of arbitrary order for single or multi-variate functions and the automatic handling of 0/0 ambiguities in the calculations. We also provide the C++ code that takes advantage of operator overloading and recursion. The method is demonstrated by path animation, Gaussian curvature computation, and curve fairing. © 2020 Budapest University of technology and Economics. All rights reserved.
