Research has shown nonparametric regression to hold high potential to accurately forecast short-term traffic flows. However, many fundamental questions remain regarding the ability of KNN-NPR(K nearest neighbor nonparametric regression) to meet real-time system requirements and adequate accuracy requirements. So this paper puts forward three improvements which are: effective traffic state vector selection method based on self-association analysis and association analysis; improved variable K search method based on "dense degree"; and advanced data structures based on a dynamic cluster method and hash-function transformation. A field test fully proves that with three improvements, KNN-NPR can adequately meet real-time system requirements and accuracy requirements.

A design method for determining control sequences for rest-to-rest maneuvers of flexible structures with multiple actuators and multiple resonant modes is described. The problem formulation. is based on a pole cancellation approach with constraints on both the magnitude and the time rate of change of the control inputs. Time-optimality can be traded for an increased level of robustness with respect to modeling errors. Robustification is achieved by placing additional zeros of the controller on some or all of the resonant poles of the system.

A formal mapping between static information models and dynamic models is presented. The static information models are given according to an international standard for product, process and resource information exchange. The dynamic models are described as discrete event systems. The product, process and resource information is automatically converted into product routes and used for simulation, controller synthesis and verification. The focus in this paper is on resource booking problems. A high level language, which combines Petri nets and process algebra, is presented and used for specification of desired routes. A main implication of this methodology is to enable the reuse of process information when creating dynamic models for process control. This method also enables simulation and verification to be conducted early in the development.

A procedure for global optimization of PID type controller parameters for SISO plants with model uncertainty is presented. Robustness to the uncertainties is guaranteed by the use of Horowitz bounds, which are used as constraints when low frequency performance is optimized. The basic idea of both the optimization and the parameter tuning is to formulate separate criteria for low, mid and high frequency closed loop properties. The trade-off between stability margins, high frequency robustness and low frequency performance is then elucidated and, hence, the final choice of parameters is facilitated. The optimization problems are non-convex and ill-conditioned and we use a combination of new global and standard local optimization algorithms available in the TOMLAB optimization environment to solve the problem. The method does not rely on a good initial guess and converges fast and robustly. It is applied to a controller structure comparison for a plant with an uncertain mechanical resonance. For a given control activity and stability margin as well as identical tuning parameters it is shown that a PID controller achieves slightly improved low frequency performance compared to an ℋ ∞ controller based on loop-shaping. The reason for this somewhat surprising result is the roll-off in the ℋ ∞ controller, which adds additional high frequency robustness compared to the PID controller. Computationally, a factor of 10–20 has been gained compared to an earlier, less general, version of the procedure.

This paper attempts to look at the fundamental problem of fault detection and isolation (FDI) in nonlinear systems. Using the idea of input reconstruction by means of dynamic inversion the authors first discuss the properties of input (or fault) observability in linear systems. The extension of the results to nonlinear systems as well as the mathematical conditions of the calculation of the inverse system, which provides the inverse in finite algorithmic steps, are given. The applicability of the inversion process to fault reconstruction in nonlinear systems is demonstrated.

In this paper, a new numerical method based on Genetic Algorithm (GA) for robust Strictly Positive Real (SPR) synthesis is presented. The algorithm works well in coefficient space of continuous-time systems and is computationally efficient for some types of polynomial families, such as polynomial segments, interval polynomials and polytopic polynomials et al. The method can be easily extended to the discrete-time systems. Illustrative examples are provided showing that the method is rather effective for arbitrary given high-order systems.

In this paper, the problems of isomorphic decomposition and controllability of a class of nonlinear systems possessing symmetries, on the basis of quotient systems, is studied. The isomorphic decomposition formations of these systems are derived. Finally, it is shown that controllability of the original systems can be determined by that of the subsystems, which are obtained through isomorphic decomposition. The corresponding sufficient and necessary conditions are given. Two new theoretical results have been proved.

In this paper, the problem of system decomposition of complex linear dynamical systems, by exploiting the similarity property, is studied. System decompositions were sought in terms of similarity hierarchical structures. Three new theoretical results were proved. A method for constructing the transformation has been derived. The conditions for such decomposition of complex linear systems are given.
