This paper addresses networking and traffic control problems in network systems along with the potential for introducing soft-computing applications at supervisory control level. The incentive Stackelberg strategy control concept was introduced to the networking model that comprises subsidiary systems of users and of network. A linear strategy is proposed for the elastic traffic problem, and results are demonstrated and illustrated via Kelly's (1997) example. The presented method is extended to the non-elastic traffic problem and results are also illustrated via a slightly modified Kelly example. Ways of employing combined analytical and soft-computing approaches and techniques in a hybrid framework have been investigated. A fuzzy-Petri-net supervisor is proposed to implement the strategic decision and control layer. Insofar obtained results are rather encouraging, and this research continues further towards possible implementation as well as some open theoretical issues.

Computation of an ARMA covariance function is a common ingredient in analysis and synthesis of various problems in stochastic control, estimation and signal processing. In this paper, we present an algorithm based on simple polynomial calculations. Compared to alternative strategies, its computational load increases slowly with the order of the process. Further, it shows good numerical robustness and applies to multivariable ARMA processes, even with complex-valued coefficients. © 2001 EUCA.

In this paper the output-tracking problem of a class of composite nonlinear systems is studied. Composite system can be represented solely by models on the grounds of its inputs and measurable outputs. It is assumed that (i) the plant system belongs to aclass of composite non linear systems, and that the fuzzy logic control system applied can efficiently use adjustable parameters to approximate its non linear system function. The new theorem guarantees the synthesized indirect fuzzy adaptive control does ensure stable output tracking and possesses the ability to reduce the number of fuzzy rules.

Several techniques exist to incorporate disturbance rejection requirements in a linear controller design. Contrary to, for example the H-infinity controller design technique where only one degree of freedom is available to obtain both disturbance rejection and performance, a disturbance observer adds a degree of freedom, thereby enabling a separate design of the disturbance rejection and the performance. There are many ways to design, implement and represent disturbance observers. We focus on two design methodologies and their corresponding representations. It can be shown that, in the case that the (SISO) plant is linear, the methodologies result in an equivalent disturbance observer. We use this equivalence to relate some properties well-known for one methodology to the other methodology, and vice versa.

In wireless multimedia services, the system can provide a user with multiple data rates. This paper focuses on the combined control of rates and powers for the system, in which a finite number of transmission rates are available. This problem was first addressed by Kim, Rosberg and Zander (see Proc. IEEE VTC Fall, p.1653-57 1999) and two distributed power control algorithms were suggested. One of the suggested algorithms there is called selective power control (SPC). In this paper, we extend SPC by combining it with the active link protection (ALP) scheme. The main purpose of such an extension is trying to guarantee the minimum rate to users and to minimize the number of rate changes by smoothing the realized CIRs. Computational experiments are carried out on a DS-CDMA system. The results indicate that the modified SPC achieves smaller outages and less rate changes while giving the same or slightly higher system throughput, compared with SPC.

Performance Enhancement and Robustness for Linear systems With Saturating Actuators

L 2 stability for null-controllable linear systems with bounded controls is achieved by scheduling a parameterized state feedback control law constructed from a parameterized family of solutions of an H ∞ -type Riccati equation. The scheduling is based on the magnitude of a virtual control signal and explicitly allows saturation and non-monotonicity (in time) of the scheduling parameter. These properties enhance convergence of the state by allowing the full utilization of the available control authority. Robustness to both a class of memoryless input uncertainties and a class of input-additive disturbances is also guaranteed. Simulation results for a case study illustrate the main features of the proposed control scheme.

Combining First Principles with Black-Box Techniques for Reaction systems

A control oriented hybrid model structure combining first principles models with standard black-box techniques for modelling nonlinear dynamics of reaction systems is presented in this paper. The approach is formulated in a general framework for continuous stirred tank reactors and analyzed in details through a case study of a reactive distillation column. The approach is based on easily established mass balance equations, the stoichiometry of the system as well as model reduction techniques. The choice of combined inputs and the model structure is motivated by some general control objectives for this class of systems. A progressive identification of this model structure can be performed when a dominant part exists. The application to real process data is presented. This model structure has been successfully used in an IMC scheme for an industrial reactive distillation column.

Robust H ∞ Filter Design via Parameter-Dependent Lyapunov Functions *

This paper is concerned with the problem of H ∞ filtering for linear continuous-time systems with uncertain time-varying parameters in the matrices of the state-space signal model. The admissible values of the parameters and their rates of variation are assumed to belong to a given polyhedral region. Based on a parameter-dependent Lyapunov function, which is quadratic in the uncertain parameters, we develop an LMI method for designing a linear stationary, asymptotically stable filter, which ensures a prescribed performance in a H ∞ sense.

This paper proposes a genetic-based algorithm for surface reconstruction of three-dimension (3-D) objects from a group of contours representing its section plane lines. The algorithm can optimize the triangulation of the surface of 3-D objects with a multi-objective optimization function to meet the needs of a wide range of applications. Further, a new crossover operator for triangulation and a new 3-D quadrilateral mutation operator are also introduced.

This paper describes B-spline interpolation and compares it with other reconstruction methods, especially in three-dimensional space. We first consider the B-spline bases in the terms of convolution in signal processing. The presented analysis requires careful usage of continuous and discrete representation of B-spline. Emphasis is given to the important difference between B-spline interpolation and approximation. The difference is shown through frequency domain analysis, so we derive frequency responses of the B-spline interpolation and approximation. We conclude by demonstrating the use of several reconstruction filters and appropriate gradient estimators in volume rendering. Exact reconstruction in volume visualization is very important in many industrial applications, such as material cavity control.
