This paper reports on AnnieWAY, an autonomous vehicle that is capable of driving through urban scenarios and that has successfully entered the finals of the 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge competition. After describing the main challenges imposed and the major hardware components, we outline the underlying software structure and focus on selected algorithms. Environmental perception mainly relies on a recent laser scanner which delivers both range and reflectivity measurements. While range measurements are used to provide 3D scene geometry, measuring reflectivity allows for robust lane marker detection. Mission and maneuver planning is conducted using a concurrent hierarchical state machine that generates behavior in accordance with California traffic laws. We conclude with a report of the results achieved during the competition. © 2009 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Nowadays, the carpet quality analysis is determined in industry by human experts, because the automated assessment is not capable of matching the human expertise. Therefore, the carpet company demands a reliable and economic standardization of carpet wear level. This paper presents a new strategy for analyzing and classifying the texture of the wear carpet surface of 3D image, where 3D image is produced by 3D laser scanner. 2D image is obtained from 3D data resample on different grid sizes. The features extracted are based on Haralick descriptors of co-occurrence matrix. These features are used as inputs to a classifier system, which is based on support vector machine (SVM). Multi-class classification training based on SVM is applied. The performance of the new technique proposed gives an average of over 92% correct labeling.

In this paper is presented the improvement of the hardware and the optimization of the algorithm of a system for short-time weather forecasting, developed by the authors. With a purpose of reading of more parameters there are proposed some solutions, related with giving of more accurate forecasts. The features of the system are extended and by means of Wireless communication and access to Internet for connection with other similar systems and/or Internet servers for meteorological information. The algorithm of work of the system is optimized as for base methods for prediction are accepted the Trends and Persistent methods, and the read of the surface effects are reduced to the influence of the wind, the humidity and the clouds cover. This leads to reducing of the requirements for processing resources of the used microcontroller and the volume of the processed statistical data. Under account are taken some modern methods for atmosphere sounding, and by them to increase the accuracy and to extend the range of the given forecasts.

The non-contact automatic on-line classification of explosives is a multi-aspect task. It involves choosing the method of information gathering, planning and conduction of experiments, choosing a classifier, formation of training and control samples, synthesis and reduction of recognition attributes, etc. This paper presents the results of conducted experiments for non-contact ultrasonic information gathering, formation of attribute spaces by means of wavelet transformations and an automatic classification of explosives.

Web-Technologies which came up in many fields of automation seem to be a solution which improves device integration in many ways. On the one hand the used Ethernet improves the installation techniques with reliable and approved network cables and routing devices. On the other hand the used internet protocols provide several services for the application software development. With the introduction of those services, the local controller of the measurement devices has to execute complex communication protocols in addition to the device specific tasks. This fact has serious influences on the measurement device instrumentation and the execution of the device firmware. Concerning new developments and compatible adaptations of existing instruments several ways for the integration of web technologies are available. The following article is intended to explain the architectural aspects of device integrations using Industrial Ethernet by means of an embedded web server. As a practical example to this architecture, concepts and results of a new developed communication module called EWI (embedded web interface) are given to demonstrate the improvements in measurement device integration in the field of automotive test bed automation.

The performance exploration (T. Baumann et al., 2007) is becoming more important in embedded system design like networked system on chip (NoC) design. Due to the rising complexity it is necessary to accomplished the performance analysis (T. Baumann et al., 2007) already in the early design stages. The model based mission level design supports exactly this approach (MLDesigner). An overall executable model can be achieved consisting of function, architecture/performance and mission models. Missions describe the environment and concrete use cases which makes an early execution and thus a validation of the system (V. Zerbe et al.) possible. In the paper the focus is directed toward the standardized architecture components and the performance exploration. Furthermore the concept is illustrated on an example of an ethernet based system.

This paper presents an optimization strategy for supermarket refrigeration systems. It deals with one special condition when the extremely high outdoor temperature causes the compressor to saturate, and work at its maximum capacity. In a traditional control, refrigerated foodstuffs inside display cabinets will suffer from a consequential higher temperature storage, which is detrimental to the food quality, and in worst cases they have to be discarded according to the regulation from authorities. This will cause a big economic loss to the shop owner. By utilizing the thermal mass of foodstuffs and their relative slow temperature change, Model Predictive control (MPC), foreseeing this situation, it will use more compressor power to cool down the foodstuffs in advance, preventing the high temperature storage from happening, thus saving them from being discarded.

In this paper is presented algorithmic realization of system for short-term weather forecasting, which makes acquisition, processing and visualization of information, related to the parameters temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity, wind speed and direction. The proposed algorithm is defined from the juxtaposition of the collected statistical data with the currently measured data, on the chosen methods for weather forecasting and the determined correlation between the processed meteorological quantities. The choice of the methods for weather prediction is made according the needed input data and the resources for their realization. © 2007 ACM.
