Timetabling is essential for the organization and functioning of higher education institutions (HEIs). This complex task requires balancing various factors such as availability of teachers, availability of halls, huge number of students in each specialty and course, preferences and satisfaction of students and teachers (agents). Although it may seem like a routine administrative activity, the compilation of a timetabling is indeed a multi-criteria task and requires the use of algorithms and optimization methods. The aim of the timetabling is to ensure the optimal distribution of learning activities in time and space, ensuring efficient use of resources, priorities and meeting the needs of all participants in the learning process, namely the agents. A properly designed timetabling not only contributes to improving the academic success of the students but also facilitates the work of the teachers and administration of the university. In this context, the development of mathematical models and computer systems for the automated compilation of timetabling is crucial for the modern management of the educational process. These tools not only optimize the process of composing timetabling, but also provide opportunities for adaptation to changing needs and conditions in HEIs.

Reviewing scientific research project proposals (SRPPs) is essential for the development of scientific knowledge and innovation. Traditional peer review methods often face challenges such as significant drafting time, subjective evaluations, and a shortage of qualified reviewers, which reduce the quality of reviews. With the development of artificial intelligence, the potential for improving the peer review process is being discovered. This study proposes and evaluates an algorithm to assist the peer review process using ChatGPT. The algorithm aims to optimize the review process by automating the analysis, generating objective scores using weighting coefficients, SWOT analysis and providing feedback on various aspects of project proposals. The study analyses the effectiveness of the algorithm through a SWOT analysis that highlights its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The algorithm may be useful for reviewers, researchers and academic institutions seeking to enhance the effectiveness and objectivity of SRPP evaluation.

This work presents the development of an algorithm for automated abstract generation of scientific publications that integrates the capabilities of ChatGPT with expertise in the field of academic writing. The development of such an algorithm is essential for optimizing abstract creation processes, especially for complex topics or high quality requirements. The algorithm allows customization of abstracts according to authors’ specific needs. It includes functionalities for evaluation of the generated response, SWOT analysis of abstract structure and content, translation of the text into different languages, and grammar and spell checking, thus providing a means to produce quality abstracts in accordance with academic standards. The study highlights the role of artificial intelligence as an indispensable tool in scientific research, emphasizing the importance of continuously applying technological innovation to ensure meaningful scientific advances.

Unlike teaching theoretical subjects, teaching practical subjects have differences and require some special considerations. In a higher education institution (HEI) with a technical focus, learning practical skills is most often associated with seminars and laboratory exercises, specialized materials and equipment, smaller learner group sizes, and often longer blocks of time (a discipline’s instructional hour) for practical training. In distance learning (DL), teaching practical skills poses significantly more difficulties than teaching theory. The purpose of this paper is to present a SWOT analysis for DL of engineering students. With the help of this analysis, decisions can be made to improve the quality of distance education. This SWOT analysis presents some of the main aspects of DL for engineering specialties in HEIs and can serve as a starting point for a more detailed study of the situation encountered in DL.

This paper presents the WDCLF (Web Declare, Conceptual, Logical, Physical) method for web database design (WDB), which has been adapted to the needs of web applications. The paper discusses the application of neural networks for processing heart rate variability signals, which is necessary for more reliable diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. The relevance of this task is due to the fact that computerized electrocardiogram processing systems, including neural networks, have firmly entered the practice of clinical research. The paper proposes, with the aim of increasing the reliability of diagnosis, to perform preprocessing of rhythmograms and to calculate a series of integral characteristics of cardiointervalograms using statistical and geometric methods. To solve the problem of diagnosing cardiac arrhythmias, a multilayer perceptron classifier of the form 11-10-4 was created. Preprocessing was performed to form input parameters, including the extraction of peaks and the formation of rhythmograms, as well as the calculation of heart rate variability parameters. The neural network receives 11 values for each ECG (electrocardiogram) signal as input: SDNN, SDANN, SDNNi, SDSD, NN50, pNN50, CV, Mo, AMo, VR, IN. Based on the ECG analysis results, it was classified into one of four classes: normal rhythm, atrial fibrillation, other types of arrhythmias, noise. Two algorithms were used for training: backpropagation and conjugate gradients. Testing the network on real ECGs showed a sufficiently high diagnostic accuracy (sensitivity not less than 85%, specificity 82%). The results of the work can be applied in automated ECG analysis systems, particularly in Holter monitors.

The development of digital twins (DTs) of industrial electrical systems is attributed to the need for the reduction of time and material resource inputs during their virtual commissioning (VC). The same problem occurs during renovation with complete or partial equipment replacement and/or control systems. These problems can be efficiently solved by developing object-oriented DTs based on the Simulink Real Time software and using hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HIL). This software is compatible with Matlab Simulink and the Simscape package, which makes it suitable for the industrial usage. The authors suggest a HIL-based approach that helps make a virtual real-time computer model, with process control signals coming from the industrial PLC that controls the real physical object. This problem occurred during the renovation of the horizontal stand electric drives of a 5000 plate mill. The authors provide the flow charts of the electromechanical system and the object-oriented DT. The implementation of DT in Matlab Simulink Desktop Real Time is reviewed in laboratory settings. The authors present the block structures that make up a virtual model of the electromechanical system. The developed DT was used to adjust control algorithms and controllers and study the dynamic modes over a rolling cycle. The adequacy of the processes was tested by comparing the oscillograms obtained with the developed DT and the rolling mill. The authors stress the feasibility of developing DTs on the Simulink Real Time platform using HIL simulation during VC and renovation of complex industrial objects. © 2024 IEEE.

This report reviews an example of acoustic positioning of partial discharges (PD) in the tank of a high-voltage oil-filled transformer. The literature review confirms the importance of PD monitoring and justifies the feasibility of positioning discharge activity centers. The precise positioning of PD sources is required to determine the location of insulation defects. The authors provide brief information on the development of PD positioning methods and note that their practical application has been insufficiently covered in publications. They present the results of electromagnetic and acoustic PD positioning in a 110 kV transformer. Some details are provided on the devices and measurement methods used, including the localization of areas with increased PD intensity using one acoustic sensor and the subsequent center localization through the installation of 4 sensors at even intervals. The authors provide PD signals and defect impulses received from each of the sensors and demonstrate the difference in the registration time of these signals. They explain the principle behind PD center positioning, which is determined considering delays in signal reception. The authors demonstrate the usage of the Inva (Portable) software for the processing and visualization of acoustic positioning results. They note that changes in the propagation rate of acoustic waves in a heterogeneous medium result in the reduced accuracy of results. The authors also outline the prospects of the research into the elimination of occurring defects. © 2024 IEEE.

This article presents the results of implementing a digital signal processing method for analyzing the acoustic emission (AE) signature and detecting defects such as cracks and pores. The signal processing method is based on a cascade connection of digital high-pass filters and ensures the selection of informative signals and increases the signal-to-interference ratio. In order to control the formation of defects in the process of selective laser melting, the paper presents the results of experimental testing of the cascade filtration method for detecting defects in the internal structure such as cracks and pores. The signal components recorded during the development of defects during the growth of additive manufacturing products were extracted. AE signatures were analyzed and statistical relationships were assessed. The relationship between the parameters of the AE signal and the values of laser radiation power has been identified, which characterizes the process of defect formation. © 2024 IEEE.
