A design method for determining control sequences for rest-to-rest maneuvers of flexible structures with multiple actuators and multiple resonant modes is described. The problem formulation. is based on a pole cancellation approach with constraints on both the magnitude and the time rate of change of the control inputs. Time-optimality can be traded for an increased level of robustness with respect to modeling errors. Robustification is achieved by placing additional zeros of the controller on some or all of the resonant poles of the system.

This paper presents fuzzy identification of two bioprocesses employing TSK-type models. A “Modified Gram-Schmidt” (MGS) orthogonal estimator is used to estimate the consequent parameters. This approach is then applied to identify two distinct cases involving dissolved oxygen concentration: one related to a bioreactor and the other one related to an activated sludge process. The obtained models are then cross-validated.

Optimization of Internal Thermally Coupled Distillation Columns of Nonideal Mixture

Internal thermally coupled distillation column(ITCDIC) is a frontier in energy saving distillation research. In this paper, the optimal assessment on the energy saving and the operating cost for ITCDIC of nonideal mixture is explored. An evaluating method is proposed, and the pertinent optimization model is then derived. The ethanol-water system is studied as an illustrative example. The optimization results show that the maximum energy saving in ITCDIC process is about 35% and the maximum operating cost saving in ITCDIC process is about 30%,as compared with a conventional distillation column(CDIC) under the minimum reflux ratio operating; the optimal operating pressure of the rectifying section is found to be around 0.25 MPa; the effects of the feed composition,operating pressure and the heat transfer rate on operation are also found and analyzed. It is revealed that ITCDIC process possesses high energy saving potential and promising economical prospect.

One of the most interesting recently developed brain activity imaging methods is functional MR imaging (fMRI). The advantages of fMRI, i.e. noninvasiveness, reproducibility and interactivity of examination, must be measured against the problems like data distortion and limited time for examination. A major problem is that most fMRI segmentation procedures are partly interactive. There is a high demand for precisely and automatically working segmentation algorithms in order to get meaningful results within an acceptable short time. This article discusses the use and implementation of a genetic algorithm (GA) as a kernel for an automatic 3D segmentation of gray matter and white matter of a human brain within the procedure of fMRI.

Fault detection is increasingly an essential part of vehicle development. Integrating such fault detection subsystems raises the reliability, maintainability, and safety of automobile components. Until now, the suspension system was not a safety-critical component, but with the introduction of global chassis control systems this system is getting more important. Therefore, the paper presents fault detection algorithms for the suspension system. Real measurements of a vehicle are made to compare the advantages of the different fault detection algorithms.

An Anti-Windup Decoupling Nonlinear control for a Paper Machine Headbox

Since most of the chemical processes are represented typically by nonlinear models, the use of nonlinear geometric control in chemical processes is straightforward. This paper presents a decoupling application in a paper machine headbox. The nonlinear geometric control is implemented with blocks for reference trajectory, tracking error, integrators of error feedback and with an anti-windup scheme. The results show a clear implementation scheme and good dynamical responses.

A control oriented hybrid model structure combining first principles models with standard black-box techniques for modelling nonlinear dynamics of reaction systems is presented in this paper. The approach is formulated in a general framework for continuous stirred tank reactors and analyzed in details through a case study of a reactive distillation column. The approach is based on easily established mass balance equations, the stoichiometry of the system as well as model reduction techniques. The choice of combined inputs and the model structure is motivated by some general control objectives for this class of systems. A progressive identification of this model structure can be performed when a dominant part exists. The application to real process data is presented. This model structure has been successfully used in an IMC scheme for an industrial reactive distillation column.

When process non-linearities are responsible for the deterioration of linear controller performances, usually the linear approximation of the model is updated as the operating conditions change. The alternative approach, which is used in this paper, is to directly incorporate the non-linear phenomenological simulator of the process into the controller. To assess the method, the control of a cooling zone of an iron oxide pellet-sintering furnace, a multivariable process containing strong gain variations, has been simulated. The structure of the predictive controller is based on the internal model control scheme. The observer part of the control loop uses the non-linear phenomenological dynamic model of the process, while the controller part uses either the steady-state or the dynamic non-linear model for output predictions.
