In recent times, the automotive industry has made significant steps towards digitization by focusing on electronic cockpits (E-Cockpits) to enhance the driving experience, comfort and safety. The incorporation of Touch-Based User Interface (UI) technologies has played a crucial role in revolutionizing Driver-Vehicle interaction [10]. The project of E-Cockpit represents a concept that consolidates various internal car systems onto one unified digital platform, enabling seamless control and access to essential infotainment, safety features, and connectivity services [14]. For the realization of the complete potential of an E-Cockpit, it is important to develop an innovative and User-Friendly touch UI as this directly influences both user experience and safety concerns. © 2023 IEEE.

Spiking Neural Network Feature Discrimination Boosts Modality Fusion

Feature discrimination is a crucial aspect in neural network design, as it directly impacts the network’s ability to distinguish between classes and generalize across diverse datasets. The accomplishment of achieving high-quality feature representations ensures high intra-class separability and poses one of the most challenging research directions. While convetional deep neural networks (DNNs) rely on complex transformations and very deep networks to come up with meaningful feature representations, they usually require days of training and consume significant energy amounts. To this end, spiking neural networks (SNNs) offer a promising alternative. SNN’s ability to capture temporal and spatial dependencies renders them particularly suitable for complex tasks, where multi-modal data are required. In this paper, we propose a feature discrimination approach for multi-modal learning with SNNs, focusing on audio-visual data. We employ deep spiking residual learning for visual modality processing and a simpler yet efficient spiking network for auditory modality processing. Lastly, we deploy a spiking multilayer perceptron for modality fusion. We present our findings and evaluate our approach against similar works in the field in classification challenges. PI tuning for variable-speed multi-phase drives is a complex task. In this paper, a Pareto analysis is introduced to reveal not previously reported links between figures of merit. The drive used for the study includes a 5-phase induction motor supplied by a voltage source inverter. A finite state predictive method is used for the inner loop (current control). The outer loop (speed control) is governed by a PI. The analysis is done experimentally thus including all sorts of non-idealities not appearing in commonly found models. The experimental results show how the pursuit for better performance is hindered by the existence of links between figures of merit. The importance of the result lies in showing that arbitrary performance enhancements are not possible in a general case.

The success of the fourth and upcoming fifth industrial resolution lies majorly in automation and robotics. Industrial robots perform various manufacturing-related tasks due to their autonomy, flexibility, and autonomous work in a complex environment. Applications including drilling, material transfer, loading and unloading machines, processing, assembling, and inspection, welding, spray painting, machining, and so on are common. The present work comprehensively summarizes all the pertinent work related to the industrial robot, such as inverse kinematics problems, robot design, programming, scheduling, motion planning, and trajectory planning. In addition, the present work discusses various optimization algorithms employed in industrial robots. Furthermore, several recommendations for future research have been addressed. © 2024 Bentham Science Publishers.

The development of intelligent street light systems has ushered in a new era of efficiency and sustainability in urban infrastructure. The proposed work studies the integration of modern sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to increase the functionality of street lights. The major components include Light Dependent Resistors (LDR) for automatic light management, an MQ135 sensor for air quality monitoring, and a fog detection system employing a laser module and LDR. These sensors are integrated with the ESP8266, providing cloud integration for real-time data visualization and monitoring. Additionally, solar panels are employed to enhance energy efficiency. The proposed methodology digs into the precise implementation, data analysis, and the potential of this system to alter urban lighting infrastructure © 2024 IEEE.

Employing personal protective equipment, including helmets for safety, at industrial sites is the ultimate step in averting disasters, and such equipment is commonly recognized the disposable items. Industrial safety helmets employ Polypropylene Terephthalate (PET) or polypropylene (PP) resins is the primary material for shell to efFiciently absorb impacts. Additionally, they exhibit a commendable level of heat resistance. Nevertheless, there is currently a lack of active initiatives to develop novel materials using a straightforward fabrication approach. The objective of this work was to enhance safety behaviour of industrial helmets by using epoxy resin as the matrix to develop composite material consisting of glass Fiber and basalt Fiber in a direct cross-ply arrangement. Subsequently, the performance of this composite material was evaluated in relation to glass and basalt composites, and PET plastic. The samples are produced through compression molding method. The tensile strength (TS), Flexural strength (FS), impact strength (IS), and inter laminar shear strength (ILSS), and their heat resistance capabilities are assessed using thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA). The impact energy absorptions of BFRP, BF/GFRP, and GFRP were 6.3, 6.1, and 5.2 times higher than that of PET plastic correspondingly. Superior heat resistance was demonstrated by specimens built of Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polymer (BFRP) and Basalt Fiber/Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (BF/GFRP), as compared to the other scenarios. For instance, when compared to PET plastic, BFRP was 24.9 times stronger while BF/GFRP was 12.7 times stronger. The outcomes of this research work are showed that the basalt and glass Fiber reinforced composites (BF/GFRP) exhibit the superior impact energy absorption than PET plastic. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing. A way behind the past where teaching and learning were only by video, images, and 2D animations. Now we have live sessions where a classroom is bounded on just a laptop screen. What happened if that live session and 3D imaging are presented in the form of real sculpture by using Augmented Reality? In this paper, we are introducing a low-cost 3D display that presents both recorded and live sessions. Also, this display will be controlled with our fingertips. Tillage of the soil is the most important consideration when it comes to the implementation of agricultural practices. Increases in crop yield has been achieved through a variety of agricultural practices thanks to the discoveries of various agricultural experts. The planting process is the one that has the greatest impact on the crop's overall health. The hull can be more precisely prepared for the seed-planting trench with the assistance of furrows. A variety of furrow openers are currently undergoing the implantation process. Studying dynamic systems that are discontinuous in nature can be done with the help of discrete element modelling. The simulation of a tine-shaped furrow opener using the EDEM package software was carried out for three different speeds. When the speed of an object increases, so does the force it exerts on it. Additionally, the length of an object has an effect on the force it exerts. Additionally, taken into consideration were the profiles that were generated in the soil. To carry out statistical validation of the results analysis of variation (ANOVA) was done. The results provided a basis for calculating a confidence level of 95%. For the furrow openers, it was suggested that a speed of 0.495 meters per second, which is equivalent to 1.76 kilometers per hour, be used.

Interactive Identification of Granular Materials using Force Measurements

The ability to identify granular materials facilitates the emergence of various new applications in robotics, ranging from cooking at home to truck loading at mining sites. However, granular material identification remains a challenging and underexplored area. In this work, we present a novel interactive material identification framework that enables robots to identify a wide range of granular materials using only a force-torque sensor for perception. Our framework, comprising interactive exploration, feature extraction, and classification stages, prioritizes simplicity and transparency for seamless integration into various manipulation pipelines. We evaluate the proposed approach through extensive experiments with a real-world dataset comprising 11 granular materials, which we also make publicly available. Additionally, we conducted a comprehensive qualitative analysis of the dataset to offer deeper insights into its nature, aiding future development. Our results show that the proposed method is capable of accurately identifying a wide range of granular materials solely relying on force measurements obtained from direct interaction with the materials. Material selected for this study is A356 and four percentage of tungsten carbide (WC) powder for the fabrication of metal matrix composites. In this paper, a methodology is identified to find the co-relating higher order and the interactive influences of different input parameters affecting performance characteristics such as MRR, tool wear rate and surface roughness in wire electric discharge machining process using surface plots and artificial neural network. Voltage, flushing pressure, pulse on time and discharge current are the process parameters needed to be optimized to achieve optimum material removal rate, surface roughness and tool wear rate. Finding the ideal set of process parameters is achieved using artificial neural network which is a supervised machine learning algorithm and results are compared with RSM method. Results show that supervised machine learning technique (ANN) is performing better than the Response surface methodology (RSM) in terms of performance predictions. © The Institution of Engineers (India) 2024.
