Quantization effects are inevitable in networked control systems (NCSs). These quantization effects can be reduced by increasing the number of quantization levels. However, increasing the number of quantization levels may lead to network congestion, (i.e., the network needs to transfer more information than its capacity). In this paper, we investigate the problem of designing a robust ℋ ∞ output feedback controller for discrete-time networked systems with an adaptive quantization density or limited information. More precisely, the quantization density is designed to be a function of the network load condition which is modeled by a Markov process. A stability criterion is developed by using Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and sufficient conditions for the existence of a dynamic quantized output feedback controller are given in terms of Bilinear Matrix Inequalities(BMIs). An iterative algorithm is suggested to obtain quasi-convex Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs) from BMIs. An example is presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design.

Differential Evolution (DE) is a simple and efficient numerical optimization method. Most DE variants in the literature adopt fixed population size. This paper incorporates into DE the mechanisms of lifetime and extinction which regulate DE's population size in an adaptive manner. The population size is adjusted according to the online progress of fitness improvement. Two schemes of inserting new individuals are proposed to match different mechanisms respectively. The performance of these innovations is examined through the optimization of benchmark problems. The results show that the proposed adaptive population sizing strategy is efficient for improving the convergence and efficiency of the DE. © 2011 Asian control Association.

2-keto-L-gulonic acid (2-KGA), a key precursor in the synthesis of L-ascorbic acid, is produced by mixed fermentation of Bacillus megaterium and Gluconobacter oxydans with L-sorbose as substrate. For such mixed cultivation, the mechanistic modelling is difficult because the interactions between the two strains are not well known yet. Therefore, data-driven modelling is studied in this paper. The rolling learning-prediction (RLP) based on support vector machine (SVM) is practiced to predict the product formation. To satisfy the online application demand, pseudo-on-line prediction is carried out using the data from commercial scale 2-KGA cultivation. The prediction approach receives data in sequence and the historical database of the SVM is updated with statistical analysis of the product formation after the termination of a batch. The robustness of the prediction approach is further tested by adding extra noises to the process variables.

In this paper, a direct synthesis approach is proposed to design ETF based multivariable decoupling controllers. This new scheme is different from two existing ETF based decoupling schemes which involves the following steps: (1) by uniquely determine the ETFs for every transfer function element, the inverse matrix of transfer function matrix is approximated; (2) selecting the desired closed-loop system transfer function such that the resulted controllers are stable, causal and proper; (3) deriving the achievable full-matrix decoupling controller by specifying the tuning parameters. The effectiveness of the proposed design approach is verified by two multivariable industrial processes, which shows that it results in better overall system performance than other two ETF based schemes.

Abstract Epistatic miniarray profiling (E-MAP) is powerful for measuring gene biological relevance. However, E-MAP suffers from large number of missing values, and in order to use the E-MAP information more efficiently, the missing values have to be estimated. In this paper, considering advantages and disadvantages of different independent algorithms, we proposed a novel fusion approach based on the high-level diversity to estimate missing values that consists of two global and four local base estimators. Experiment results show our fusion scheme is more effective and robust for the missing value imputations and outperforms all single base algorithms on E-MAP data.

Nowadays, probe vehicles equipped with Global Position system (GPS) are an effective way of collecting real-time traffic information. This paper first briefly introduces the Curve-Fitting Estimation Model (CFEM), which is one of the typical methods using GPS data to estimate the traffic flow state. After that, it is detailedly analyzed how many probe vehicles the CFEM requires in order to ensure enough estimated accuracy. Furthermore, a sample size algorithm is developed to calculate the minimum sample size of the CFEM. In the algorithm, the road type, the length of road section, and sample frequency are taken into account. Finally, the proposed algorithm of sample size analysis are tested by the experiments using the data collected from the road network of the whole center region of Shanghai.

This paper presents a new adaptive controller for visual tracking control of a robot manipulator in 3D general motion with a fixed camera whose intrinsic and extrinsic parameters are uncalibrated. In addition to camera parameters, the feature positions in 3D space are also assumed unknown. Based on the fact that the unknown parameters appears linearly in the closed-loop dynamics of the system if the depth-independent interaction matrix is adopted to map the image errors onto the joint space of the manipulator, we developed a new adaptive algorithm to estimated the unknown parameters on-line. With a full consideration of dynamic responses of the robot manipulator, we employ the Lyapunov method to prove asymptotic convergence of the image errors. Experimental results are used to demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach.

Understanding the synchronization process of self-propelled objects is of great interest in science and technology. We propose a synchronization model for a self-propelled objects system in which we restrict the maximal angle change of each object to θR. At each time step, each object moves and changes its direction according to the average direction of all of its neighbors (including itself). If the angle change is greater than a cutoff angle θR, the change is replaced by θR. We find that (i) counterintuitively, the synchronization improves significantly when θR decreases, (ii) there exists a critical restricted angle θRc at which the synchronization order parameter changes from a large value to a small value, and (iii) for each noise amplitude η, the synchronization as a function of θR shows a maximum value, indicating the existence of an optimal θR that yields the best synchronization for every η.

The optimization of reactive power compensation plays an important role in power system planning and designing. A mathematical model in the 10kV distribution network will be established in this paper. Its objective function is the cost of investment in equipment of reactive power compensation and active power loss of the system should be the least. The node voltages beyond limited and the generator reactive power output beyond limited will be expressed in the way of penalty function. In this paper, the improved particle swarm optimization (improved PSO) will be used to solve the problem of easily falling into local optimum if using PSO. Using the improved PSO can be more effective in searching the global optimal solution, the speed of reactive power optimization will be improved too. The algorithm can better adapt to solve the problem. © 2011 IEEE.

Image radiometric distortion is problematic to many remote sensing based image change detection methods. Thus image radiometric normalization is critical to successful change detection and other image analysis. Histogram matching (HM) method has been widely used for radiometric normalization. However, when two corresponding image scenes have partial changes, these changes will introduce additional distortions in the histogram matching process. Obviously, if the change areas in the images can be excluded from histogram matching, the distortions in histogram matching will be avoided. Thus, a novel, iterative change detection based HM normalization algorithm is proposed in this paper. The algorithm of the proposed iterative invariant area histogram matching and an adaptive thresholding schema are first introduced, and the change detection experiment results are then presented. The preliminary results indicate that the proposed method significantly improves the performance of change detection for a given threshold as judged by visual inspection.
