Meta-analysis, the statistical analysis of results from separate studies, is a fundamental building block of science. But the assumptions of classical meta-analysis models are not satisfied whenever publication bias is present, which causes inconsistent parameter estimates. Hedges' selection function model takes publication bias into account, but estimating and inferring with this model is tough for some datasets. Using a generalized Gleser-Hwang theorem, we show there is no confidence set of guaranteed finite diameter for the parameters of Hedges' selection model. This result provides a partial explanation for why inference with Hedges' selection model is fraught with difficulties. © 2019, CC BY.

Nuclei segmentation is a fundamental task in digital pathology analysis and can be automated by deep learning-based methods. However, the development of such an automated method requires a large amount of data with precisely annotated masks which is hard to obtain. Training with weakly labeled data is a popular solution for reducing the workload of annotation. In this paper, we propose a novel meta-learning-based nuclei segmentation method which follows the label correction paradigm to leverage data with noisy masks. Specifically, we design a fully conventional meta-model that can correct noisy masks using a small amount of clean meta-data. Then the corrected masks can be used to supervise the training of the segmentation model. Meanwhile, a bi-level optimization method is adopted to alternately update the parameters of the main segmentation model and the meta-model in an end-to-end way. Extensive experimental results on two nuclear segmentation datasets show that our method achieves the state-of-the-art result. It even achieves comparable performance with the model training on supervised data in some noisy settings. © 2021, CC BY.

As the current computer design level continues to improve, the process equipment and production line management levels are relatively stable. The intelligent and automatic 3D garage-type has shown a diversified development trend. Several garage types are currently in everyday use, including vertical lifting type, vertical lifting type, simple lifting type, horizontal shifting circulation type, channel stacking type, etc. The 3D lifting garage has a simple structure, small floor space, low operating cost, and the most extensive application requirements. However, this study summarizes the application status and development prospects of smart lifting 3D garages first. Then the system analyzes the working principle and mechanical structure characteristics of the smart lifting 3D garage, analyzes the control requirements, and designs the semi-automatic control system of the 3D garage S7–1200—it including the PLC control program and the man-machine interface. Finally, the overall system control effect is verified through simulation. This study meter has superficial operation characteristics, a high degree of automation, fast operation speed, high stability, and has deep development value and application prospects in specific markets. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

A sparse semismooth Newton based proximal majorization-minimization algorithm for nonconvex square-root-loss regression problem

In this paper, we consider high-dimensional nonconvex square-root-loss regression problems and introduce a proximal majorization-minimization (PMM) algorithm for solving these problems. Our key idea for making the proposed PMM to be efficient is to develop a sparse semismooth Newton method to solve the corresponding subproblems. By using the Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz property exhibited in the underlining problems, we prove that the PMM algorithm converges to a d-stationary point. We also analyze the oracle property of the initial subproblem used in our algorithm. Extensive numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the high efficiency of the proposed PMM algorithm.

Background & Aims: Oxidative stress is an essential factor in the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). A previous study found protective potential of some antioxidative nutrients against IBD. However, the association between total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of the diet and incident IBD is unclear. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study including 186,195 IBD-free participants at baseline from the UK Biobank. We calculated dietary TAC using the oxygen radical absorbance capacity method based on repeated online 24-hour dietary recalls. Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) were identified via inpatient register and primary care data. Genetic susceptibility for IBD was assessed by a polygenic risk score. Cox proportional hazard models were applied to estimate multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: During a median follow-up of 11.4 years, we identified 396 CD and 809 UC incident cases. Individuals with the highest quintile of dietary TAC had a lower risk of CD (27.0 vs 17.0 cases/100,000 person-years;aHR, 0.66;95% CI, 0.49–0.90) but not UC (46.7 vs 35.5 cases/100,000 person-years;aHR, 0.85;95% CI, 0.69–1.06) compared with the lowest group. We observed interactions between TAC and genetic susceptibility at both multiplicative (P-interaction = .008/0.063 for CD/UC) and additive (both P values < .05) scales. Additionally, a polymorphism of the endogenous antioxidant enzyme gene SOD2 (rs4880) modified the dietary TAC-UC association (P-interaction = .039). Conclusion: This study suggests that a diet with high TAC may help prevent the development of IBD, particularly in individuals at high genetic risk of IBD and in mutation carriers of rs4880 in SOD2. © 2024 The Author(s)

The spontaneous emergence of patterns in nature, such as stripes and spots, can be mathematically explained by reaction-diffusion systems. These patterns are often referred as Turing patterns to honor the seminal work of Alan Turing in the early 1950s. With the coming of age of network science, and with its related departure from diffusive nearest-neighbor interactions to long-range links between nodes, additional layers of complexity behind pattern formation have been discovered, including irregular spatiotemporal patterns. Here we investigate the formation of Turing patterns in simplicial complexes, where links no longer connect just pairs of nodes but can connect three or more nodes. Such higher-order interactions are emerging as a new frontier in network science, in particular describing group interaction in various sociological and biological systems, so understanding pattern formation under these conditions is of the utmost importance. We show that a canonical reaction-diffusion system defined over a simplicial complex yields Turing patterns that fundamentally differ from patterns observed in traditional networks. For example, we observe a stable distribution of Turing patterns where the fraction of nodes with reactant concentrations above the equilibrium point is exponentially related to the average degree of 2-simplexes, and we uncover parameter regions where Turing patterns will emerge only under higher-order interactions, but not under pairwise interactions.

The smart and automatic bag-changing trash can is controlled by a circuit chip and consists of an infrared detection device and a mechanical, electronic drive system. As long as an object approaches the sensing area, the lid will automatically open, and the lid will automatically close after a few seconds after the object or hand leaves the sensing area. It does not require an external power source. It is powered by a battery and has low power consumption. The exquisite streamlined appearance sensor flip design, which combines infrared sensors and microcomputers, is flexible and convenient, and it can easily throw away garbage without manual or foot stepping. It is also convenient and hygienic and has reliable performance, which helps you effectively prevent contact infections. It comprises functional modules such as ultrasonic distance measurement, photoelectric sensor modules, motor drive modules, and voice alarm modules. It takes an ultrasonic sensor, RPR220 photoelectric sensor, and single-chip computer as the core. Distance information is collected through the sensor, and then the single-chip computer sends instructions through AD conversion. When the ultrasonic sensor detects that the distance between the person and the trash can is less than the set distance, the trash can automatically flip the lid. If the RPR220 photoelectric detects the full trash can, the system will give a voice prompt. This system has a simple structure, stable performance, convenient operation, and low cost. This paper designs multifunctional trash can control system based on STC89C52RC. Models of vacuum energy interacting with cold dark matter:Constraints and comparison

In this paper, we investigate the observational constraints on the scenario of vacuum energy interacting with cold dark *** consider eight typical interaction forms in such an interacting vacuum energy scenario. The observational data used in this work to constrain these models include the JLA sample of type Ia supernovae observation, the Planck 2015 distance priors data of cosmic microwave background anisotropies observation, the baryon acoustic oscillations data, and the Hubble constant direct measurement. We find that the current observational data almost equally favor these interacting vacuum energy models. We also find that for all these models of vacuum energy interacting with cold dark matter the case of no interaction is actually well consistent with the current observational data within 1σ range.
