PANX2 and brain lower grade glioma genesis: A bioinformatic analysis

PANX2 forms large-pore channels mediating ATP release in response to physiological and pathological stimuli. Although PANX2 shows involvements in glioma genesis, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. PANX2 mRNA expression was analyzed via Oncomine and was confirmed via Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA). The influence of PANX2 on overall survival (OS) of glioma was evaluated using LinkedOmics and further assessed through Cox regression analysis. The correlated genes with PANX2 acquired from LinkedOmics were validated through GEPIA and cBioPortal. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) of these genes was then obtained using Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes (STRING) and Cytoscape with MCODE plug-in. All the PANX2-related genes underwent Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analyses. The correlation between PANX2 and cancer immune infiltrates was evaluated via Tumor Immune Estimation Resource (TIMER). A higher expression of PANX2 only revealed a better OS in brain low grade glioma (LGG). PANX2-related genes in LGG functionally enriched in neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, synaptic vesicle cycle, and calcium signaling. The hub genes from highest module of PPI were mainly linked to chemical synaptic transmission, plasma membrane, neuropeptide, and the pathway of neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction. Besides, PANX2 expression was negatively associated with infiltrating levels of macrophage, dendritic cells, and CD4+ T cells. This study demonstrated that PANX2 likely participated in LGG pathogenesis by affecting multiple molecular pathways and immune-related processes. PANX2 was associated with LGG prognosis and might become a promising therapeutic target of LGG. © The Author(s) 2021.

The globalization of Taiwan's corporate industries is subject to competition and threats at two critical levels. Taiwan's factories could use Industry 4.0 to enhance their competitiveness. This listing Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturing factory Hsinchu A, B conducts industrial maturity assessment analysis of automation equipment. This study shows that the existing equipment automation in Factory A is 1.20, the ideal is 2.74, the average is 1.65, and the proportion of artificial is 80%, which is much higher than the industry average of 42%. The actual value of equipment automation in Factory B is 2.96, and the ideal is 2.76. The standard is 1.67, fully automatic, accounted for 100%, much higher than the industry average of 15%. The automation of the equipment evaluation project shows the average value of the leading industry self-evaluation. Finally, although this equipment's operation has been relatively smooth, we must pay attention to the industry's future trends and promptly improve it. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Introduction to Coresets: Accurate Coresets

A coreset (or core-set) of an input set is its small summation, such that solving a problem on the coreset as its input, provably yields the same result as solving the same problem on the original (full) set, for a given family of problems (models, classifiers, loss functions). Over the past decade, coreset construction algorithms have been suggested for many fundamental problems in e.g. machine/deep learning, computer vision, graphics, databases, and theoretical computer science. This introductory paper was written following requests from (usually non-expert, but also colleagues) regarding the many inconsistent coreset definitions, lack of available source code, the required deep theoretical background from different fields, and the dense papers that make it hard for beginners to apply coresets and develop new ones. The paper provides folklore, classic and simple results including step-by-step proofs and figures, for the simplest (accurate) coresets of very basic problems, such as: sum of vectors, minimum enclosing ball, SVD/ PCA and linear regression. Nevertheless, we did not find most of their constructions in the literature. Moreover, we expect that putting them together in a retrospective context would help the reader to grasp modern results that usually extend and generalize these fundamental observations. Experts might appreciate the unified notation and comparison table that links between existing results. Open source code with example scripts are provided for all the presented algorithms, to demonstrate their practical usage, and to support the readers who are more familiar with programming than math. With the rapid progress of virtual reality and augmented reality technologies, 3D contents are the next widespread media in many applications. Thus, the protection of 3D models is primarily important. Encryption of 3D models is essential to maintain confidentiality. Previous work on encryption of 3D surface model often considers the point clouds, the meshes, and the textures individually. In this work, a multi-level chaotic maps model for 3D textured encryption was presented by observing the different contributions for recognizing cipher 3D models between vertices (point cloud), polygons, and textures. For vertices which make main contribution for recognizing, we use high-level 3D Lu chaotic map to encrypt them. For polygons and textures which make relatively smaller contributions for recognizing, we use 2D Arnold’s cat map and 1D logistic map to encrypt them, respectively. The experimental results show that our method can get similar performance with the other method and use the same high-level chaotic map for point cloud, polygons, and textures, while we use less time. Besides, our method can resist more method of attacks such as statistic attack, brute-force attack, and correlation attack. © 2020, Springer science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH. Epidemiological delays, such as incubation periods, serial intervals, and hospital lengths of stay, are among key quantities in infectious disease epidemiology that inform public health policy and clinical practice. This information is used to inform mathematical and statistical models, which in turn can inform control strategies. There are three main challenges that make delay distributions difficult to estimate. First, the data are commonly censored (e.g., symptom onset may only be reported by date instead of the exact time of day). Second, delays are often right truncated when being estimated in real time (not all events that have occurred have been observed yet). Third, during a rapidly growing or declining outbreak, overrepresentation or underrepresentation, respectively, of recently infected cases in the data can lead to bias in estimates. Studies that estimate delays rarely address all these factors and sometimes report several estimates using different combinations of adjustments, which can lead to conflicting answers and confusion about which estimates are most accurate. In this work, we formulate a checklist of best practices for estimating and reporting epidemiological delays with a focus on the incubation period and serial interval. We also propose strategies for handling common biases and identify areas where more work is needed. Our recommendations can help improve the robustness and utility of reported estimates and provide guidance for the evaluation of estimates for downstream use in transmission models or other analyses. The diverse relationships among real-world events, including coreference, temporal, causal, and subevent relations, are fundamental to understanding natural languages. However, two drawbacks of existing datasets limit event relation extraction (ERE) tasks: (1) Small scale. Due to the annotation complexity, the data scale of existing datasets is limited, which cannot well train and evaluate data-hungry models. (2) Absence of unified annotation. Different types of event relations naturally interact with each other, but existing datasets only cover limited relation types at once, which prevents models from taking full advantage of relation interactions. To address these issues, we construct a unified large-scale human-annotated ERE dataset MAVEN-ERE with improved annotation schemes. It contains 103, 193 event coreference chains, 1, 216, 217 temporal relations, 57, 992 causal relations, and 15, 841 subevent relations, which is larger than existing datasets of all the ERE tasks by at least an order of magnitude. Experiments show that ERE on MAVEN-ERE is quite challenging, and considering relation interactions with joint learning can improve performances. Bioaerosols, such as pollen and fungal spores, are routinely monitored for agricultural, medical or urban greening practices, but sampling methodology is largely relying on techniques more than half a century old. Moreover, biomonitoring campaigns often take place in urban environments, although sources can be located outside cities’ borders with ampler vegetation. Therefore, the question arises whether we are accurately picturing the biodiversity and abundance of regional bioaerosols and whether those locally detected might derive from long-distance transport, horizontally or vertically. To answer the above, we used novel, mobile monitoring devices, and aerial measurement units, like aircrafts, so as to explore bioaerosol concentrations at a variety of altitudes. An ultralight aircraft was equipped with a sampling device for bioaerosols. The device consisted of duplicate isokinetic impactors that match the physical functioning and the microscopic quantification method of the widely used ground-based Hirst-type impactors. Isokinetic airflow was realized by adjusting the air flux at the impactors’ inlet to the airspeed of the aircraft. Three campaigns were made, where the comparability, efficiency and accuracy of different sampling devices were determined, namely of the abovementioned impactor, and of the mobile conventional Hirst-type pollen sampler. The campaigns involved measurements from ground level (0 m altitude) up to 900 m (above ground level (agl)) via flights. Our results showed that aircraft-based airborne pollen concentration measurements were consistently higher than those of all other devices, regardless of the altitude and sampling time. It is noteworthy that the pollen concentration exceeded 500 pollen grains/m³ at >900 m of altitude, this concentration being 1.77 times higher than that simultaneously measured at ground level. Sufficient crop yield while maintaining soil health and sustainable agricultural development is a global objective, serving a special challenge to certain climate-sensitive plateau areas. Despite conducting trails on a variety of soil amendments in plateau areas, systematic research is lacking regarding the influences of organic and inorganic amendments on soil quality, particularly soil microbiome. To our knowledge, this was the first study that compared the effects of inorganic, organic, and mixed amendments on typical plateau crop hulless barley (Hordeum vulgare L. var. nudum, also known as "Qingke" in Chinese) over the course of tillering, jointing, and ripening. Microbial communities and their responses to amendments, soil properties, Tibetan hulless barley growth, yield, and their indicator microbial species were investigated. Results indicated that mixed organic and inorganic amendments promoted the abundance of rhizosphere microorganisms, enhancing the rhizosphere root-microbes interactions and resistance to pathogenic bacteria and environmental stresses. Additionally, total organic carbon (TOC) and carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio and the hullesss barley yield were the highest when mixed organic and inorganic amendments were applied. The rhizosphere microbiome demonstrated its unique adaptation to the plateau environment in carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus cycles, as well as resistance to environmental stresses. The abundance of 23 genes about plant growth and environmental adaptations in the mixed amendment soil were significantly higher than other treatments. Findings from this study suggest that the mixed organic/inorganic amendments can help establish a healthy microbiome and increase soil quality while achieving sufficient hulless barley yields in Tibet and presumably other similar geographic areas of high altitude. © 2022, The Authors. Learning cost function for optimal transport

Inverse optimal transport (OT) refers to the problem of learning the cost function for OT from observed transport plan or its samples. In this paper, we derive an unconstrained convex optimization formulation of the inverse OT problem, which can be further augmented by any customizable regularization. We provide a comprehensive characterization of the properties of inverse OT, including uniqueness of solutions. We also develop two numerical algorithms, one is a fast matrix scaling method based on the Sinkhorn-Knopp algorithm for discrete OT, and the other one is a learning based algorithm that parameterizes the cost function as a deep neural network for continuous OT. The novel framework proposed in the work avoids repeatedly solving a forward OT in each iteration which has been a thorny computational bottleneck for the bi-level optimization in existing inverse OT approaches. Numerical results demonstrate promising efficiency and accuracy advantages of the proposed algorithms over existing state-of-the-art methods. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A robust and generalized framework for adversarial graph embedding

Graph embedding is essential for graph mining tasks. With the prevalence of graph data in real-world applications, many methods have been proposed in recent years to learn high quality graph embedding vectors various types of graphs. However, most existing methods usually randomly select the negative samples from the original graph to enhance the training data without considering the noise. In addition, most of these methods only focus on the explicit graph structures and cannot fully capture complex semantics of edges such as various relationships or asymmetry. In order to address these issues, we propose a robust and generalized framework for adversarial graph embedding based on generative adversarial networks. Inspired by generative adversarial network, we propose a robust and generalized framework for adversarial graph embedding, named AGE. AGE generates the fake neighbor nodes as the enhanced negative samples from the implicit distribution, and enables the discriminator and generator to jointly learn each node's robust and generalized representation. Based on this framework, we propose three models to handle three types of graph data and derive the corresponding optimization algorithms, i.e., UG-AGE and DG-AGE for undirected and directed homogeneous graphs, respectively, and HIN-AGE for heterogeneous information networks. Extensive experiments show that our methods consistently and significantly outperform existing state-of-the-art methods across multiple graph mining tasks, including link prediction, node classification, and graph reconstruction.
