In this paper, we present a nonlinear dimensionality reduction algorithm which is aimed to preserve the local structure of data by building and exploiting a neighborhood graph. The cost function is defined to minimize the discrepancy between the similarities of points in the input and output spaces. We propose an effective way to calculate the input and output similarities based on Gaussian and polynomial kernel functions. By maximizing the within-cluster cohesion and between-cluster separation, KUBE remarkably improves the quality of clustering algorithms on the low-dimensional embedding. Our experiments on image recognition datasets show that KUBE can learn the structure of manifolds and it significantly improves the clustering quality. © Springer International Publishing AG, part of Springer Nature 2018.

Evolving out of a gender-neutral framing of an involuntary celibate identity, the concept of 'incels' has come to refer to an online community of men who bear antipathy towards themselves, women, and society-at-large for their perceived inability to find and maintain sexual relationships. By exploring incel language use on Reddit, a global online message board, we contextualize the incel community's online expressions of misogyny and real-world acts of violence perpetrated against women. After assembling around three million comments from incel-themed Reddit channels, we analyze the temporal dynamics of a data driven rank ordering of the glossary of phrases belonging to an emergent incel lexicon. Our study reveals the generation and normalization of an extensive coded misogynist vocabulary in service of the group's identity. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Amorphous carbon (a-C) has become a promising material applied for optoelectronic devices. The requirement parameter that should be considered to develop the device is the electronic property of the structure composed. a-C materials are composed of a hybridization mixture of sp2 and sp3 orbitals. The new characteristic possessed by a-C must be studied to investigate its electrical properties. In this paper, the density functional theory (DFT) using Quantum Espresso package has been applied to generate and analyze the density of state and band structure of a system. Here, the amorphous structure of carbon is modeled to be a combination between one unit cell of graphene with sp2 hybridization and 2-unit cells of diamond, with sp3 hybridization. The result shows that the electronic property of the a-C proposed behaves as metal, which is experimentally supported by the electrically conductive properties of sp2-hybridization carbon.

With the increasing number of urban infrastructure construction projects under the PPP (Public-Private-Partnership) investment, the traditional operation and maintenance model presents a number of problems, such as low efficiency and high cost of operation & maintenance, fragmentation of stakeholders, difficulty in estimating the value of facility assets and utilizing the isolated multi-source data. In view of this, this research proposes a new model for Intelligent Operation and Maintenance of Urban Infrastructure (IOMUI), which is based on the exploration of the claims from various stakeholders under the PPP model, and combined with emerging ICT technologies. Through the analysis of the current facility industry chain, our research proposes a shared ecosystem, which extends the vertical industrial chain, and ultimately forms the model of IOMUI. The proposed ecological business model provides a reference for the reform and upgrading of the OMUI industry, and also contributes to the sustainable development of the industry. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.

Analysis of protein-protein interaction to obtain significant protein in influenza virus type A/H9N2

In bioinformatics, graphs are often used to describe cell processes, representing interactions between proteins in a protein-protein interaction network. Some proteins significantly influence these tissues and play an essential role in a regulation called significant proteins. Significant proteins are functional as data for drug discovery. Graph analysis is needed to reduce the graph and find these significant proteins. So far, there have been no studies discussing protein interactions in avian influenza type A/H9N2, a zoonotic subtype of avian influenza. Although this virus is classified as Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza, it is troubling the public because it reduces the production of chicken eggs by 80% and disrupts the reproductive organs of mammals. This study aimed to find a significant protein from avian influenza type A/H9N2. From the results of this study, we found ten network clusters with the ClusterONE algorithm. We perform graph analysis on the first cluster because it is the best cluster with the smallest p-value of 0.000023. The cluster contains 20 nodes representing 20 proteins. The analysis graph (Analysis centrality) that is simulated in MATLAB includes betweenness centrality, closeness centrality, degree centrality, eigenvector centrality, and page rank centrality. Of the 20 proteins, nine significant proteins were obtained, namely CD247, CD48, FCGR2A, FCGR2B, IL10, PTPN22, PTPRC, SLAMF1, and TRL5, the highest score on the FCGR2A protein. The highest score indicates that the FCGR2A protein has the most dominant effect on the protein-protein interaction network of Avian Influenza virus type A/H9N2.

Background: Sex hormones play an important role in human health, and sex hormone disorders can cause a series of relevant consequences. Cadmium is ubiquitous in the environment, while little is known on the relationship between cadmium exposure and sex hormones in adult ***: Adult male aged ≥ 18 years old who participated in China National Human Biomonitoring program from 2017 to 2018 were surveyed. Blood cadmium, urine cadmium and urine cadmium adjusted with creatinine were measured, serum testosterone and serum estradiol were measured, and T/E 2 was calculated. Multiple linear regression models were used to analyze association of cadmium exposure with serum testosterone and T/E 2 in adult ***: Among Chinese adult males ≥ 18 years old, the weighted geometric means (95% CI) of blood cadmium, urine cadmium and urine cadmium adjusted with creatinine levels were 1.23 (1.12, 1.35) μg/L, 0.63 (0.56, 0.71) μg/L and 0.53 (0.47, 0.59) μg/g, respectively. The geometric means (95% CI) of serum testosterone and T/E 2 were 18.56 (17.92, 19.22) nmol/L and 143.86 (137.24, 150.80). Triggered by the COVID-19 crisis, Israel’s Ministry of Health (MoH) held a virtual data-thon based on deidentified governmental data. Organized by a multidisciplinary committee, Israel’s research community was invited to offer insights to help solve COVID-19 policy challenges. The datathon was designed to develop operationalizable data-driven models to address COVID-19 health policy challenges. Specific relevant challenges were defined and diverse, reliable, up-to-date, deidentified governmental datasets were extracted and tested. Secure remote-access research envi-ronments were established. Registration was open to all citizens. Around a third of the applicants were accepted, and they were teamed to balance areas of expertise and represent all sectors of the community. Anonymous surveys for participants and mentors were distributed to assess usefulness and points for improvement and retention for future datathons. The datathon included 18 multi-disciplinary teams, mentored by 20 data scientists, 6 epidemiologists, 5 presentation mentors, and 12 judges. The insights developed by the three winning teams are currently considered by the MoH as potential data science methods relevant for national policies. Based on participants’ feedback, the process for future data-driven regulatory responses for health crises was improved. Participants expressed increased trust in the MoH and readiness to work with the government on these or future projects. © 2021 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.

Beamforming Technologies for Ultra-Massive MIMO in Terahertz Communications

Terahertz (THz) communications with a frequency band 0.1 − 10 THz are envisioned as a promising solution to future high-speed wireless communication. Although with tens of gigahertz available bandwidth, THz signals suffer from severe free-spreading loss and molecular-absorption loss, which limit the wireless transmission distance. To compensate for the propagation loss, the ultra-massive multiple-input-multiple-output (UM-MIMO) can be applied to generate a high-gain directional beam by beamforming technologies. In this paper, a review of beamforming technologies for THz UM-MIMO systems is provided. Specifically, we first present the system model of THz UM-MIMO and identify its channel parameters and architecture types. Then, we illustrate the basic principles of beamforming via UM-MIMO and discuss the far-field and near-field assumptions in THz UM-MIMO. Moreover, an important beamforming strategy in THz band, i.e., beam training, is introduced wherein the beam training protocol and codebook design approaches are summarized. The intelligent-reflecting-surface (IRS)-assisted joint beamforming and multi-user beamforming in THz UM-MIMO systems are studied, respectively. The spatial-wideband effect and frequency-wideband effect in the THz beamforming are analyzed and the corresponding solutions are provided. Further, we present the corresponding fabrication techniques and illuminate the emerging applications benefiting from THz beamforming.
